Art as Activism: The Compelling Paintings of Ben Shahn
This is the documentary that was completed by 2009 National History Day Senior Documentary Finalist, Lauren White. The documentary covers the artistic life, career and motivations of the lauded artist Ben Shahn, who is one of the originators of the "Social Realism" movement of the 20th Century. His paintings cover social issues ranging from the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti to the tribulations of the crew members of the "Lucky Dragon" and war time propaganda.

Lauren, Thank you for your brilliant documentary. Loved it. My wife, Jackie Captain, and I just watched this morning. Jackie was engaged in work on social activist artists' work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her dissertation featured the work of artists and activists, such as Ben Shahn. I often use his work for his moral force at my website, Mal Contends, and I think Shahn's commitment is well-represented by the following quote: "I hate injustice. I guess that's about the only thing I really do hate."
