Abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell's life and art
During her lifetime artist Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) wasn't as celebrated as her male peers. But as evidenced in a new exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the abstract expressionist created startlingly colorful and lyrical works that reflect the intensity of a life lived on her own terms. Correspondent Rita Braver reports.

We drove from Detroit to Baltimore to see the Joan Mitchell retrospective. It was stunning! And well worth the drive!! Thanks, CBS Sunday Morning, for covering the extraordinary Joan Mitchell and her work!
I love her paintings so much. If you don't "get" it, that ain't my problem. I just wish we had seen slides of her work in art history back in art school in the 1970s.
I'm madly in love with her artwork 💛💚💙💜
Kudos to Sunday Morning for featuring visual art. Joan Mitchell's work is spectacular.
She is a painter's painter...her work is still so fresh and exciting now💙

With respect, soke of these to me look like random colorful streaks and other marks..what am I missing or is that not a valid POV?
Pablo Picasso: “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” Abstract art is NOT easy. Like anything done by a master- it just looks easy. Joan MItchell's work is brilliant and beautiful.
The paintings are magnificent.
Never heard of her, but her art is amazing. Wish I had a dozen of her works decorating my walls.
One of the very best abstract artists.
I just viewed her work next to Monet's via an article of a show in Paris that displays both alongside each. Wow! Just amazing how "familiar" Monet's work can be seen in hers and vice versa. She was born the year after Monet died. Just beautiful, truly. 💖🙏💫🌎
Great show!
Just stunning 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Joan’s emotional state is clearly exhibited in her art. She certainly struggled.
Artista universal. Bella mujer!!
Joan Mitchell. Miss you...
In the past, I was of the thinking that if it had to be explained, then it is not art -- at least not to me. But over the years, I've grown to appreciate true artists -- as well as the skills and training necessary to create something from nothing. That being said, I remained puzzled how the works featured in this piece can be considered art. And hearing people explain their importance looks and sounds like proud parents gushing over the "artwork" on their fridge.

I thought the same thing. For people who appreciate it, I think it’s great. Art is subjective and I just don’t understand this type of art.

And once again, because they feel like tutorials. I could continue, but I'm pretty sure that addresses your request.
Kind of De Kooning with tropical colors. Interesting.
I prefer her work more than basquiat.
J aime beaucoup

it's so funny to read the reviews of Mitchell's paintings. Why bother watching this if you do not enjoy it? When confronted with any of these large paintings in person the experience is beyond anything you see on a small video screen. Btw, she could paint the human form better than most of her contemporary's. Giorgio Morandi was a figurative artist, but if you really look close, his simple objects are abstracted. He said, " nothing is more abstract than reality"
Abstract art is hard. "Challenging" is good. A bowl of fruit is boring to look at.

It takes mastery to create a bowl of fruit, boring as it may be to view. It's exactly where many started. Not every artist can jump ahead into the other bowl of greatness.

I wonder, how does her being white influence her art? Do people like her work more because she is a white person? As a white expressionist artist, her work is impressive.
I find the comment about her love life and mental health is out of context and irrelevant in the narrative of this story.

@@albertamaloney6580 oh I don’t know.. for self expression, visual fulfillment, making art for the sake of art, to make a living, to tell a story, convey a message.. but I guess the stereotype of the tortured artist is more marketable so there goes.

The book Ninth Street Women might be helpful in placing her love life and mental health in context. I stress the word might.

are you saying people say its art when it isn't? not good art in my opinion.
Who would want that color-smeared canvas behind Leslie Stahl ? Surely there are better paintings by Mitchell.

If you have young children...give them pain and canvas. Voila art.
No. Vacuity is what Mitchell has.
For me, if it abstract, then it has to be abstract of something. I can't see anything in any of it. Paint by numbers is as abstract as anyone should need to get.

As an artist trying to work on the edge of abstraction and representation, I find your comment very engaging. Is it possible for you to provide examples of what an abstraction of a real image would hold meaning for you?
I could paint like that and people would say what the heck is that.

"MASTERPIECES" LOL. ANYONE CAN BE A SUPERSTAR ARTIST AS LONG AS YOU MARKET YOURSELF RIGHT OR ARE MARKETED RIGHT. Collectors invest in a brand name, not in how good of an artist you are. They buy the work to be admired as art collectors or just to flip it and make a profit, they don't care what it looks like.
Nope.

Reality is sexist and most privileges of women derives from sexism but to call her failure as a painter sexism is silly.
