Abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell's life and art

During her lifetime artist Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) wasn't as celebrated as her male peers. But as evidenced in a new exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the abstract expressionist created startlingly colorful and lyrical works that reflect the intensity of a life lived on her own terms. Correspondent Rita Braver reports.

I just viewed her work next to Monet's via an article of a show in Paris that displays both alongside each. Wow! Just amazing how "familiar" Monet's work can be seen in hers and vice versa. She was born the year after Monet died. Just beautiful, truly. 💖🙏💫🌎

In the past, I was of the thinking that if it had to be explained, then it is not art -- at least not to me. But over the years, I've grown to appreciate true artists -- as well as the skills and training necessary to create something from nothing. That being said, I remained puzzled how the works featured in this piece can be considered art. And hearing people explain their importance looks and sounds like proud parents gushing over the "artwork" on their fridge.

it's so funny to read the reviews of Mitchell's paintings. Why bother watching this if you do not enjoy it? When confronted with any of these large paintings in person the experience is beyond anything you see on a small video screen. Btw, she could paint the human form better than most of her contemporary's. Giorgio Morandi was a figurative artist, but if you really look close, his simple objects are abstracted. He said, " nothing is more abstract than reality"

They buy the work to be admired as art collectors or just to flip it and make a profit, they don't care what it looks like.
