ARRI behind the scenes of Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”
Фильм және анимация
Watch an exclusive, in-depth BTS featurette about Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” analyzing the cinematography, VFX, lighting, and cloud-based workflow of a key sequence of season one: the eruption of Mount Doom. “The Rings of Power” was captured in large format with ARRI’s ALEXA Mini LF and ALEXA LF cameras combined with DNA LF and Signature Prime lenses supplied to the New Zealand-based production by ARRI Rental Munich. The aftermath of the eruption was filmed in a sound stage with hundreds of ARRI SkyPanel S60 and S360 LED fixtures behind muslin screens around and above the village set, allowing the crew to fine tune the red color and create soft backlight in every direction.
With multiple units shooting simultaneously and the pandemic restricting travel, the producers set up a sophisticated cloud-based workflow that depended on metadata supplied by the cameras and lenses. For this behind the scenes look at a pivotal moment of season one, cinematographer Alex Disenhof ASC, senior visual effects supervisor Jason Smith, producer Ron Ames, and visual effects producer Jesse Kobayashi all sat down with ARRI to discuss their work on episodes six and seven of the show.

Yeah, agree 100% No one needs the virtue signaling on that. Of course you were all wearing masks at a time when all productions were wearing masks. If you're not wearing masks it's either before or after. BTS features for me are depressing when I see crew wearing masks, it just dates the time the show was made and reminds me of the hell that time was.

I am not even sure if technicals were that amazing, yes they were above average of TV, but given the budget nothing extraordinary. And a quite a few VFX shots still were lacking. Cinematography wasn't always perfect either, though this might be due to bad set design. I think generally getting to much into cinematography, technical aspects can also be bad. You often hear "I always wanted to do that", "that has never been done before" or "it looks cool", which isn't inherently bad, but if this isn't followed/backed by "we wanted to give a good depiction of what Tolkien wrote" it gets self absorbed quickly and too much of the former and too less of the latter you notice it on screen.

Technical production costs: 2 million dollars. scriptwriters cost: $500.
All that jazz to make the worst series out of a classic literature.
You investigated how would a volcano eruption may look like, but the scriptwriters forgot that the explosive ash cloud burns and chokes.
if as much care and thought had been given into the story, the show would be a huge success. for me, its sad, that overwhelming amount of skill and time flows into cinematography, rather than the more important things..
yeah ok i see, but it always feels to be to clean, like it should be more muddy more real dirt feels like
if only they had a good script
So the camera team had the ultimate control over all the colors, spend a bunch of time testing it, and then still put a filter on the front of their lens. And then, after all of that, you still had to change the color of the fires in post-production? There's a reason why you were able to move around so fast in filming. Because you were just counting on fixing things in post-production.

Love seeing the behind the scenes. I didn’t mind the show personally, obviously no where near as good as the og films. I do wonder though where the money went for the most expensive tv show ever made? Doesn’t look like anything crazy here, compared to other high budget films.
I think this is wonderful and yes i that goes with the story of it as well. I think the story and writing was good not perfect but it was good. Overall very good in all areas
This show was/is loaded with an incredible array of talent, sfx, cinematography, set design, etc, lots of hard work, time and effort was put in as is clearly shown. I have to disagree slightly on this. If all you're doing is staring at the visuals and talking about how great they are... they are actually serving as a distraction from the story. You shouldn't spend the entire time marveling at how amazing stuff looks. That should be an afterthought. The visuals should serve the story. It shouldn't be that the story serves the visuals.

That was kind of the problem with it. They were spending all the time thinking about how it should look... That state became obsessed with the visuals. When you read how the series was pitched, the focus was on the locations. Not the story. Similarly, if you're spending that much time thinking about what kind of orange works right for fire, it's because you don't have a lot else to focus on. You don't know how to serve the lead actors in telling the story

I feel like they spent so much time trying to artificially tweak the colours that they would have just gotten it in camera if they shot of 35mm. they wouldn't have needed to go so over the top and their would have been no perceptive issue with the "green" they were talking about. too much digital. too much technology. not enough/any good story telling to make up up for an artificial look.
@Ender1
Жыл бұрын
This just isn’t true. It has to do with human perception, it has nothing to do with digital or film. When you light a scene with very red light (which I did) the human eye adjusts itself, making the yellow firelight look more green in tone. The colors weren’t artificially tweaked at all. If you listen to what we are talking about, the whole point is that we shot it with colored light and captured it in camera!
