    Definitely helpful man! I appreciate it. I'm 29 and I have finally been able to get my health and fitness in order, something I haven't been able to do since I graduated 10 years ago. I'm about to begin the process of enlisting, and with the amount of college credits I have ill go to BCT as an E-2. I've kinda been throwing around the idea of "is it really worth it to join now" I have been with my current company for 5 years but doesn't seem to be going anywhere, so I kinda feel like I should just go further outside that comfort zone and see where the military life takes me.

    Hi Wrekt, I get it brother I was 32 when I shipped out last year. You will absolutely be pushed and will grow while you coach and mentor those around you. Age helps give you an advantage in that you have some real world experience that can really benefit a lot of those fresh outta school. Let me know what you need from me and I’ll post a video about it when I get time. Currently in the field running training ops out somewhere in some desert. Have a good!

    2LT, Absolute respect for you entering the Army. It appears you've had business success; you'll certainly have similar achievement in the military. You've shared fair, reasonable thoughts with others. So learn land nav and keep up on fitness, not to mention basic tasks. In OCS, somehow another Candidate and I (who were both past NCOs and humbly proficient at land nav where we helped others to learn) were put on course with a...huge... swamp; we ran into each other at the swamp bank and devised a way to circumnavigate it...staying dry...where we separately made all our points and the extraction point on time...still dry. Later, we separately mentioned the swamp to others and everyone said they were so glad there was no swamp during their course! An instructor later told us, 'So how'd you both like the swamp. We thought you'd come back soaked.' And then we heard the truth and our assumptions were correct. Thanks for your honesty, true words of wisdom and service to our nation. I'm not an engineer, but 'Assayons.' A LTC.

    I appreciate the positive response and and glad you enjoyed the content. The swamps are real, I almost lost a boot I thought when stomped through that mud. Glad you succeeded in spite of the curve ball. Failing land nav is what helped me gain proficiency and now I'm not as intimidated by it...though I still don't like swamps.

    It's insane how much we have in common. I'm also a JiuJitsu and ITF Taekwondo practitioner , and I have always wanted to join, but something holds me back. I've always been passionate about aviation, but instead chose the comfy side, and became a software developer (+ Business Degree). The whole I.T. culture is full of passive aggressive people and tons of obnoxious nerds. I can't stand it man, but the problem with joining, I feel like i'm going to miss out on opportunities :( Plus, i'm married, something on the back of my mind doesnt want to let my wife go for such a long time. I'm thinking Army Reserves or National Guard

    In the process of joining the Air Force at 32. I’ve prioritized staying in shape but my worry is seeing older recruits going in as officers. I think the best I could do is E3 with no degree and a 6 yr contract.

    You have your path and they have their’s so just do what you need to do and don’t sweat anyone else. Whatever your heart is telling you to do just be sure to check that with trusted counsel, mentors and people who are solid in your life. It took me a really long time to finally pull the trigger but I decided to go in as an officer knowing there are pros and cons to both. My best advice is to hear the thoughts from prior military members let you know and that know you and your personality well

    Glad your safe and that I can help in any way. I joined at 32 so most people I hear from have plenty of time to decide. Many of my friends are in the Navy; I used to live in San Diego. Hope that you get everything you want out of the experience. Getting the GI Bill is a great plus (requires 36 months active duty service)

    I'm 37 (but look 26) and I've been trying to get in since 35. Now there's just so much bs to get through just to get in like dependency waiver, age waiver, medical waiver (prior Marines). This shit is taking too long and I'm not getting any younger.

  • @SixFigureCouchSurfer

    @SixFigureCouchSurfer

    Really depends on a lot of things. Yes if it doesn’t interfere with work so if you’re freelancing or consulting it’s should be fine. Always check with your leadership if there’s a question. You definitely can build your brand with uploading great content like Nick Bare did with his supplements. The military is essentially a massive target audience with various types of demographics that you can run your products by to see why they think. Great way to learn about your business’ viability. And you can definitely hear more on my podcast I’m gonna start interviewing a bunch of people from the military: Six Figure Couch Surfer

    Do you listen to Jocko Podcast? If not, you should. I feel like you would like it. Also, you've answered my comment in the past but I forgot to mention that I have a 4 year degree. Im 29 with kids and a wife. Would you recommend enlisted still? Im not sure I want to make it a career and I felt like my initial contract could be somewhat of a feeler and if I enjoyed it I could transition into an officer role.

    As an older guy wanting to serve (30) I was looking at officer as well. I realized how much time it would take to get it going and it seemed like more of a long term role so I’m leaning more towards enlisted. Might be a good idea to get a feel for the life style and if you enjoy it then switch over. This is just what I have gathered from my own personal research and that’s disregarding your degree and wife/kids so take this comment with salt.

    Make sure that the points you plot on the map are in the right location. This is a critical step that lots of students rush (double check all of your plots). Also-- don't forget to calculate your GM angles before you plot any points. Learn how to navigate by terrain association. Always travel with your map oriented. When doing land navigation during the day, pick a recognizable terrain feature ( road intersection or something clearly identifiable) on your map-- and travel straight to it. Focus less on your pace count and more on the map. At night, you'll need to travel slower and rely much more on your compass and pace count. Also-- don't forget to calculate your GM angles before you plot any points
