Please try to attend your child's graduation and family day. If that is not a possibility please write them as much as possible. You have no idea what it's like walking out into the bay on family day to hundreds of smiling faces and none of them are for you. Also if you have a bro/sis who doesn't have family show up invite them to be with you and yours.

When my brother graduated basic his buddy Bahn didn't have anyone show up because his family lived across the country and couldn't afford it. So we adopted him for the day. He was deployed right after getting done with training, and when he came back he stayed with us for a week. He's a part of the family pretty much.

Watching this at AIT and looking back at how nervous I was. For anyone going to basic training nowadays there's really nothing to worry about. As long as you don't give up, you'll make it. There was a girl that fell out of every single ruck minus the forge, and failed every single ACFT. She still passed on time and is now moving on to AIT. She failed at just about everything but didn't quit, and she still passed. Just don't be an ass and you'll be alright

You are dirt and they will remind you of that. Do not tell a drill sergeant sorry. They'll say IM NOT A SORRY DRILL SERGEANT and then you and/or your whole platoon gets smoked. Just be quiet and follow your battle buddies if you aren't sure what to do. Don't ask questions about what while happen unless you get permission. Do not talk in defak. Remember chain of command. Use situational awareness 24/7. Remember the Army values and Soldier Creed. DO NOT GET CAUGHT SLEEPING. Defak rules: put your heels together, knuckles to chest when holding drinks, and in line do not talk.

The Army i joined in July of 1959 was very different than the present one. We did not have any pre basic prepping, we did not pay for meals and our uniforms...or any everyday equiptment. Later on in my perm unit in Panama we did pay $2 a month for KP and to have our shoe wear maintained. We recieved a minimal uniform allowence, overseas pay .promotions come with time in grade with grades allowed in the mos . For instance a tank driver is a E-5.....squad leader E6, team leader E5 most rifleman E3 or Spec 4. Airbourne active an additional $50 a month.

aaron albert It all depends on what you’re MOS is? There’s only 5 basic training places in the US. Benning Georgia, Leonard Wood Missouri, Sill Oklahoma, Knox Kentucky, and Jackson South Carolina. I was Infantry so I went to Benning for Basic and AIT combined. 13+ weeks straight without a break. Oops 1 day break just before graduation where they took our company to Atlanta to watch a Falcons football game. Nowadays, basic training is a cream puff where you get time off between phases.

Boys and girls, I remember the first day of basic training with vivid, terrified clarity. Phase 1 they called it, followed by 2 and 3. By the way, no battle buddies in 1983. The setting: gravel parade ground, 5 barracks, 2 latrines, 1 mess hall, and a community barracks with a pool table, a stereo, and a few posters. It wasn't much, but by the third week, we thought it was Las Vegas. We got dropped for EVERYTHING. We didn't put our headgear together fast enough, we didn't help each other without being told, we didn't stow away our gear... EVERYTHING. We found out how many push-ups there were in a day. Almost forgot: for the first week, they dared us to drink anything but milk or water.

Just a note fyi, a mile is 1.61KM or ~ 1610 meters. EDIT: If your gas mask is slightly too large and you cannot get a replacement, fit it as best as possible, then open your mouth to force the mask to seal against your lower face. And, we were forced into the gas building with no mask on at least one occasion during basic training.

Once that task was over and the unit went to the next class the PVT next to me started to have a epileptic seizure I was able to catch him and get to floor with out injury. That was before we had basic first aid training. The PVT was given a profile that kept him from ever being able to use or carry live ammo since it was found that he had a reaction to the cs gas. this was back in September of 1983 in Ft Leonard Wood.

I have a buddy of mine that i went through basic with in June 2017, He was prior service Marine Corps as a Corpsman. He told me from his personal experience that Marine Corps Basic Training is Alot more Difficult due to the fact its overtly more physical. i.e 10 Pull ups in 2 minutes, 100 Crunches in 2 minutes, and a 15:36 2 Mile run for his age group. The Army Physical Fitness test has nothing on the marine corps physical. also Training is alot more intense for Marine Corps recruits, The DI's are alot more unrestrained, due to different Tradoc policy's on how they can treat you. Hope it helps.
