Armored Core 6: Fires of Weebicon (Daemon x Machina)

Ойындар

Big thanks to ‪@DerkDonk‬ for help on this video! Go sub to my man.
Daemon x Machina is a remarkably flawed game that gets some things spot on and others... not so much?
This heavily anime inspired mech fighter feels like it borrows more from the Earth Defense Force series than it does Armored Core, and it somehow manages to mess up in trying to appeal to either audience. The "story" and dialogue beyond cringe, the level design is basic and lacking good ways to engage the player, enemy encounters are flaccid, floppy and unfun, and this is one of a handful of games I have ever actually refunded on Steam.
This is not a good holdover for Armored Core fans waiting on Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, this is not a good game if you have low tolerance for cringe, this is not a good game if you dislike poor pacing and mechanical progression, and you have to enter very open minded to enjoy it. I know there are people out there that like it, but it felt like a wildly inferior version of what it tries to emulate, where I'd rather just go play EDF5 or one of the many Armored Core games.

It's a shame that the full games don't have as much excitement/fun as the trailers do.

*[WARNING: LENGTHY]* I mean, to be fair, the missions shown here are pretty early game. 2/3 of the gameplay clips are Prologue missions. Sure, the game's rather easy in terms of difficulty, but it has a certain charm to it despite that. (In my opinion at least. I still find myself playing it every now and then.) Though, let's be real, it's a really slow start. Things really kick into gear by like, late Rank D and Rank C. (Though, it is worth noting that the Prototype missions had some level of difficulty. Maybe it was just the clunkiness of your mech, or maybe the AI was better, but there was some challenge compared to the final product. Then again, the first actual boss, Gunfort, had both its cannon, and its missile launcher in that fight.) I think they were going for a mech game that had a really easy barrier of entry, especially given that the genre in question hasn't been touched for well over a decade at the time. [Edit: Especially given that at the time, Armored Core was just...gone.] And really, the game itself isn't so much an imitation of Armored Core (though, it does borrow a few design choices,) but instead a love letter to mecha _as a whole._ You got Amuro and Char's JP VAs, you got Immortal Innocence being a reference to Power Rangers apparently. The producer even playfully gives them colors in the sourcebook! (i.e, Jack/ P3 is the Red Ranger.) you got this whole parallel between Femto and Metatron from Z.O.E (which, the game feels a lot more like, most say,) there was even a few DLC skins from other mech anime...But only in the Japanese version of it. (Whereas the West got free Witcher 3 cosmetics. Yes, really.) And I guess it's worth noting The Awakening might as well be an EVA reference. I mean, heck, the Femto infested waters in the game are red as well. (Also, not a mech reference, but well, uh...Femto.) (Actually, Berserk might be a reference that's thrown in there too...) There's probably more in there, but these are just some references I know quite well. Meanwhile, while the main story isn't as difficult (or narratively as good. Basic, even,) the coop bosses do have some difficulty in them, alongside the game's final boss. More specifically, I look at the free DLC bosses _Eclipse_ and _Zeruchroar._ Eclipse on one hand, actually shows up in the promotional "anime" trailer: Mission/ Order Zero. While fighting it, it has a gravity ability that can steal your weapons, a crap ton of lasers, Gunfort's giant beam attack, and it can duplicate. Some find it annoying, some find it fun to fight. Zeruchroar on the other hand is essentially just your mech, (called an Arsenal, for those who don't know) but larger, more mobile, better armored. Fighting it alone proves to be challenging, for a lesser build. Not to say you can't cheese it, but to a beginner, they won't get too far. Frankly, it feels like the bosses in the story (as well as the side missions) were warmups _for_ the coop bosses. After all, the game was basically marketed as Monster Hunter, but with mechs. Perhaps they'll lean more into that in the sequel. Other than that, PVP is just...Fast. Explorations missions are also fun on their own. (The RNG is wack though...) If I were to describe this game, it would be like DMC with mechs, but it's mostly stuck on easy mode, with no style meter. I mean, you can be flashy, if you want. After all, most of the enemies are cannon fodder anyway. And really, I think that's the charm of this game. Being a stylish, unstoppable force. Believe me, the game has its moments. All in all, if the game isn't for you, there is another game I can at least suggest. That, being Project Nimbus, though, that game is more like Ace Combat, than Armored Core and Zone of The Enders. But y'know...With mechs. And uh...Sorry for the wall of text. Just figured I'd say my piece, while I'm here.

dw abt the long comment i appreciate that you took the time to write it out without calling me a dipshit (we’ve got some lovely hidden comments on this video lol) the missions shown were early on because (its been awhile since i made this video so i dont remember but i think i said it) i ended up refunding the game. i was really expecting armored core and got whiplash with the final product, it just very much wasnt for me. AC6 was a lot of fun and thats a lot more up my alley, but im glad that despite this game not being my thing that theres a dedicated audience that do enjoy whats here Most of this video was just poking fun at it but its not particularly sinful compared to its contemporaries. Bad EN dubs, weird pacing and bloated design choices are in a *lot* of games, and they can still be fun despite shortcomings Thanks again for commenting

@@NotAbsolutelySure I mean, I feel like the EN voice actors did a good job, the script was just eh... Truthfully, the meat of the plot doesn't get shown off until the last chapter of the game (Rank A). Though, in my opinion, while your character essentially feels like a weird mix of a side character and an Ace Combat protagonist, I would say that kinda fits their _true_ callsign. I probably shouldn't be getting all spoiler-y, but... Let's just say the Rookie exists to run in the background. (Heck, call 'em Sirius, since that's their callsign in the ongoing official novel: Star Reclaimer.)

I think the single most accurate thing you said here, an unquestionable truth, is that it having been designed for the Switch. Within those limits, it's not bad. But that is damning with faint praise in terms of mechanical design.

If they’d left it on Switch it wouldve been one of those “neat they got this going on Switch” games (although that doesnt excuse the godawful dialogue and story) But its like sticking the engine from an F1 car into a go kart, it might run better, but its still a go kart

before i made this video i looked up some of the endgame content, the game being faster doesnt make it control any better and i dont think anything i said in this video is negated if you get to the endgame, a game shouldnt take 50 hours to get fun and i dont think this one does also, sidebar, getting a sequel has very little to do with anything about quality, its mostly copies sold which says nothing about quality

Eh I played end-game and pvp pretty heavily and it felt pretty shallow. Frantic yes, in one or two missions and definitely pvp but ultimately most of my fine tuning felt pointless because everything was so easy except one of the co-op bosses. For me the story and world-building were definitely the lowest point.

ya know I'm not going to say this but looking at a certain... AC game DxM takes some strong references from... thats right AC2 :X its probably not a mere coincidence thats there. but here's what I "ULTIMATELY" think what DxM is its a "Looter" Shooter, Monster Hunter game thats skinned as "Armored Core" that controls like 4th gen AC there are some mechanically "painful" things in the game and they arent that redeeming, artificially inflate game time by forcing the player to "look" for the best parts possible is one thing, but the TUNING?! JEEBUS is also that... JEEBUS I hope Titania? Scion actually changes the "Monster Hunter looter" mechanics for one that means TUning has TO BE CHANGED. foundation as a game is there refinement is needed in fact there are some things AC6 takes some things from this game like AT LEAST THE MELEE AINT CLUNKY and I'm telling this as a guy who sunk 90 hours into this game did I enjoy it? yeah... it has something interesting aspects as a game play perspective like how Femto is used to either increase, defense, offense or speed via temporarily unlimited stamina and give you the option of a "Shadow Clone", parts breakage from Last Raven/Frame Gride, and some more AC references here and there... totally not Silent Line and or AC1 "boss" that is my general hot take of DxM (AC lite with AC4 physics if that ever makes some sense) even then late game money wont be an issue as you will be mindlessly selling excess arsenal parts with incomplete slots as you stripped them for tuning chips they really need to stop that

To be vaguely fair to the trailer, they were fighting significantly closer to the enemies than your footage. But having played the demo, fighting close-range is a good way to die. And nobody wants to die when they have to grind levels repeatedly to get randomized loot. This was a fun jab at an average-at-best game. Thanks.

dont have to play for 100 hours to realize something isnt fun, 2 hours is the refund window so if someone were to buy the game, what they see in this video is the first 2 hours meaning im saving some people time from having to do the refund process OR theyll think it might get better and ignore my opinion to go buy the game which is totally valid a 2 hour review is absolutely fine as long as you make sure you disclose it (which i did) because lets be real here, a game shouldnt take 40 hours to get good and i dont want people stuck with a game they cant refund

@@NotAbsolutelySure My issue is 2 hrs is still within the realm of not judging the game by itself by comparison to what you wanted, which is entirely AC. I'd doubt you'd like zoe2 if you wanted ac, is my point. People who want halo, but gets cod.

I actually wanted Daemon X Machina to be good, like a love letter to 80s mecha anime like Gundam, Macross, Layzner, and of course mah baby VOTOMS. Alas, this game is every bad modern anime trope the video game, which is such a shame because when you have the former producer for Armored Core at the helm, you'd expect it to be spectacular tribute to everything awesome about 80s mecha anime instead of a flaming turd of modern animu tripe. Thankfully, Armored Core VI is just the right love letter to 80s mecha anime with just the right amount of anime that you'd more expect from something like Zeta Gundam or SPT Layzner.
