I am a Die-hard Aretha Franklin Fan. She is and always will be the Queen of Soul. She was the Main Voice until Whitney came alone. For my opinion Whitney’s Voice is Angelic, she has a Voice like a Angel, and Aretha’s Voice is very Soulful but beautiful. They are simply the best.👑🎼🎵🎶🎤🙏🏾👠👠

reina lee At least Aretha was 76 when she died, she fought cancer for several years. Whitney screwed up her body with alcohol, drugs, etc. They found all kinds of crap in her system documented in her autopsy report.

I understand what Stephon is saying. What you have to remember is someone's tone is a given, but that doesn't necessarily equate to better technique; it just simply means that the color of the voice is just that, and not necessarily something she had to work on. Whitney's mother Cissy didn't have anywhere near the better voice but she was better at managing the mix voice as Aretha does. Whitney was amazing at what she did. Her mid belts were great and she had one of the most glorious head voices there ever was. She could've been a classical singer. Aretha had higher belts and could sustain those notes up there a bit longer overall. If you don't believe me, then listen to Whitney's cover of "Listen To Your Heart", which Aretha actually recorded first. If you're not a musician or music theory inclined, you may not know that Whitney took the key down a half step when she recorded it. Not only that, but those higher notes that Aretha hit in mix, Whitney did in her head voice because, she doesn't live in those higher belt areas. This is, in part, because Aretha learned to mix chest and head voice, whereas Whitney would take more weight up with her. Now, because most hear a more rounded sound as good, and a more primal lateral sound as bad, people then come to the conclusion that the "preferred" sound is technically better, they equate that to better technique, which is just not true.

And yet I would rather listen to Aretha, for it's not necessarily about the timbre but what one does with their voice. Aretha has a way of singing for me that just gets to my heart every time. Her voice is steeped more in the African American tradition. Whitney has some of that, but people tend to love her voice because it is inclined more to a Western European aesthetic of singing (clear tone ala classical).

Everyone remembers her as kind and generous. She was a really good person. And a monumental talent

How lucky, so many of us were, to have been alive when these two women made such amazing, beautiful music.

I am so glad Aretha pointed out that Whitney stood with a heart of a champion in those difficult concerts. No auto tune or lip syncing she was trying her best and the audience were rude. Give the girl a break.

When Whitney and Aretha passed I can't rap my head around it. I knew Aretha was sick but still hard to believe she passed.

Rest in Paradise, Whitney and Aretha! Thank you for the amazing music and legacy both of you have left behind! You will always be loved and remembered.

Aretha is a great singer hands down. BUT no singer on this earth can compare to WHITNEY she truly had a god given gift. And that is a fact!

But with that being said i LOVE many singers but i feel that same way ABOUT THEM as well i like listening to them but i dont get the same THING that I got fro Whitney. Whitney grew up hearing a great singers like Aretha and has stated on many occasions but long behold little whitneys voice was the national treasure of all voices. And everyone knows it! Barbara Streisand ,Stevie nicks ,Minnie Riperton and yes Aretha Franklin are better vocalists in my personal opinion .doesn’t take away from the fact that Whitney was amazing but I honestly don’t find her voice the best at all ! She had genius star quality and charisma that was unrivalled and was true performer but all these ladies I have mentioned have an equally if not more beautiful voice .Barbara Streisand’s voice is literally perfection, so effortlessly beautiful .i guess at the end of the day it’s all subjective , within the talent there’s gonna be different opinions on the rating of the talent

Cissy's vocal talent is highlighted in Aretha's song, Ain't No Way. That HIGH note is what MADE the song so damn great. It also shows from whence Whitney's talents stemmed.

In addition she was also the first black actress to command equal pay as top white actresses in Hollywood (10 million for Preacher's Wife).

Both of these women loved and appreciated each other. Whitney even said herself how much she loved and enjoyed their friendship and how much she learned from Aretha. Yes, we all know Dolly wrote and sang the original, but Dolly herself said it was "Whitney's record" and she turned it into something else completely. It wasn't just her "pretty look". Whitney had an incomparable singing talent and THAT is what capitulated that song into the stratosphere.

aretha was very cocky and wrong to think she was better than Whitney. No one beats Whitney, everyone is LIGHT YEARS BEHIND whitney especially aretha whose head voice was terrible compared to Whitney's, her mid belts as well and they are even much weaker than mariah's mid belts ( LOL ) and u dare to say aretha was better than Whitney. Ucking delusional
