I like the saying it's not the pursuit of happiness but the happiness of pursuit

If expecting a fair wage, humane treatment by employers, along with not working 40+ hours a week yet left having to choose between eating and heating are unrealistic expectations then we are screwed.

00:00 🤔 Unhappiness often stems from expectation gaps, where our expectations exceed our experiences of reality. 01:51 🥉 Research suggests that coming third in the Olympics often leads to more contentment than coming second, highlighting the impact of expectations on happiness. 03:05 💭 Three main types of expectation gaps include imagination, interpersonal, and intertemporal gaps, shaping our perceptions of reality and satisfaction. 05:01 💼 Taking happiness seriously requires efforts from various sectors, including entrepreneurs, policymakers, and content creators, to address expectation management and prioritize contentment over consumption and competition. 06:22 🏅 Understanding the role of expectations in happiness can lead to more informed decision-making and a better match between our thinking and feeling processes.

These concepts are not as new as were presented here. For example what he calls interpersonal gap is a well researched concept from social psychology called social comparison, which dates back several decades. I think it's important for these talks to not present things as though they are new when they are not. Let's not coin new names for well established phenomena and think that makes it a new idea.
