To be clear the “new standard” AS3001 everyone keeps referring to is not a new standard however a revision to an existing standard. The last revision of this standard was 2008. A lot has changed in the caravan industry since then and this standard is just catching up to what has been an industry free for all for some time. Long overdue in my opinion.

I have read a few of the comments and some people seem a little confused over what the new standard applies to.........basically if your van / ute canopy / camper trailer can be connected to any Australian commercial electrical grid then the standard applies. e.g. caravan park power (unless it is a remote area that is powered by their own generators) This is not only for your safety but also for the safety of anybody else connected to the grid, as a fault in your van may actually impact on someone else connected to the same grid. In conclusion, if you have no ability to connect to the grid e.g. no external 15Amp socket to connect to a commercial power grid, then you can do what you want with your battery /solar / generator setup. Even though this standard is not retrospective I envisage that eventually it will be applied to when you sell your van or if you rent it out, which is very similar to how the Government went about installing RCD's and smoke detectors into houses in pre-standard dwellings.

Thanks for the info :) I can't see why an individual fuse is required for each solar panel though. The advantage of having a series-configured panel is that you don't need to run thicker gauge cable. It doesn't make sense to run separate cables (thicker gauge to avoid voltage drop) back to the van.

I built a slide-on camper with shut off circuit breakers on each step to the batteries and after them put in co2 and lpg gas ,other gas leak equipment so far have not had any leaking from the batteries because there sealed.

Personally I felt that comment by the gentleman was misleading but ultimately wrong. Lithium phosphate batteries can undergo thermal runaway in certain circumstances. This can be due to overcharging, damaged batteries etc. Tesla vehicles (to name one) have Lithium phosphate batteries and there are more than one report of them catching fire due to thermal runaway. I am also greatly concerned that he considers where the batteries are located is not considered a habitable area. Come on its installed under a sofa in a caravan where people live and sleep. I really would like to see the actual definition of habitable area.

As soon as you can land a dart backwards then your van should be legal, the current situation is saying that the government and road authorities can make law's that apparently circumvent the law's of physics. The new ranger look's to handle a towing worse than ever and this Christmas numbers of them pulling vans that really need something bigger than a crusier. Had a few of those heart in the mouth watching it all go down moment's in a week 🤦 and the whole caravan industry and community are caught up with some fuses and stickers that logically should have already been fitted.

This is the beginning of the end for Fly-By-Night poor quality import Caravans and Campers. Hopefully all the dodgy (including some big-name brand) Caravan builders pull their fingers out and make their trailers safe, secure and compliant. Auto Electricians also need to be held accountable for poor quality Electrical Work such as unfused Anderson plugs and non-compliant AS 2513 plugs.

Lifepo4 batteries to Australian standards don’t give off gases when charging they are a sealed unit (so why put them in a sealed box) also they have a BMS to regulate high/low temperature under/over current this prevents thermal run away unlike AGM batteries which give off gas when charging because they are vented also there is no BMS. That’s why Lifepo4 batteries are a much better choice for safety reasons. Do yourself a favour and upgrade to Lifepo4 for safety and more power.
