Are you in there? Michael Singer on Insights at the Edge

Michael A. Singer is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself, the New York Times bestseller The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life’s Perfection, and, most recently, Living Untethered: Beyond the Human Predicament. In 1971, while pursuing his doctoral work in economics, he experienced a deep inner awakening and went into seclusion to focus on yoga and meditation. In 1975, he founded Temple of the Universe, a retreat center where people of any religion or set of beliefs can come together to experience inner peace. Through the years, he has made major contributions in the areas of business, the arts, education, health care, and environmental protection.
In this podcast, Michael joins Sounds True’s founder, Tami Simon, to speak about his latest book. Tami and Michael discuss the first question for the spiritual journey, “Are you in there?”; the “three-ring circus” of the outside world, the thoughts in your head, and the emotions that emanate from your heart; the energy of Shakti; removing the samskaras (or energy blockages) within you; resistance, will, and accepting reality; practicing the little things-the “low-hanging fruit”-on the path of surrender; the proper use of positive thinking; the mantra “I can handle this”; witness consciousness and the practice of “relax and release”; the art of transmutation; piercing the spiritual heart; and more.

All other teachings don't get even close to this one. As you practice with everyday ordinary events, like Mr. Singer says, eventually, everything becomes a low hanging fruit, and action then naturally occurs when it's needed. I feel intense gratitude for having access to this kind of guidance.

I love this Quote from Michael Singer and I just wanted to write it down to help reinforce it for me… “The moment in front of you is not bothering you…. You are bothering yourself about the moment in front of you.” I have added a version of that quote… “The event behind you is not bothering you. You are bothering yourself about the event behind you.”

James Finley taught me something I find relevant in the light of Mr. Singer's work. I am not arguing here, just offering an observation. 50:15 - If positive thinking is a choice, often times this choice is precluded by a traumatic past history buried in the individual experience. In other words, like Mr. Finley, I had to handle my samskaras in retrospection within a therapeutic context. Mine was psychology. James Finley had to leave a monastery in order to find what I would call mental health. Only then could he give himself to God and the world. My experience agrees. Anna Runkle described that family history part of my samskaras to me. I am okay about it now that I have a name for it. Only now do I feel "I can handle this." I had to name the negative energy in my family history to stop clinging - 49:15. 50:45 - the witness as being a necessary perspective, one past emotion and fear. 52.20 - "For two minutes, don't go do it." 53:40 - Experience the witness and avoid distraction that takes us outside the moment.

The parents of prior school shootings - many of them - got in their cars and headed to Uvalde. They accepted that the awfulness had happened again and knew they were the few who could help. This talk helped me understand that imagining how I would feel about it is not the helpful question but asking how I can be of service in a tragedy is the better one.

The more I listen (over and over) to Micheal's podcasts, the more I understand and internalize his message. I also love his presentation style: concrete, practical and sometimes... hilarious. His "I don't want Saturn to have rings" (from another podcast), which made me laugh my head off, has become my 'laughing mantra' every time my personal ego says 'no' to reality. Thank you TEACHER! Tami - your questioning is very fruitful. Mega - thank you to you, too.

I rented a piece of land for gardening. The field is full of weeds. I do not like it but it is the reality. I went to the hardware store and bought a mattock to root them out. I did not go for a beer and tried pretending that the field is ready to be planted. So, I looked at the reality, accepted it and was ready to take action. 🌸👍🏻 And I thought: „I can handle this!“ ☀️

Great interview, I have just finished listening to audio book read by Michael, never thought I would listen to an audio book or digital book for that matter, but there is something magical about listening to the author read their books. But even though it's there in front of you, you can still miss the wood for the trees, just tree, for me, doesn't always cut it, after listening to this interview, I feel I'm now able to let go of past blockages, some have been there for 70 years or so. I was worried because they were deep seated, how could I let go of the blockage, the samskara as Mickey calls it If didn't know they were there, after the interview I realise I don't have to know what the blockages are, even worrying I don't know is in itself a block, they will araise, I will get annoyed, voila there is the blockage, and will gladly let it go, allow it to pierce the heart and transmute the energy. The low hanging fruit on that (apple) tree is as close as my hands and feet, and THANK YOU, for showing us how to pick it.

One of my teachers called it "playing with perspectives." There are many thoughts we can think about anything. Why not choose a perspective that is energizing over a perspective that brings one down? The uncomfortable perspective can be true. But the energizing perspective can also be true. For example, my friend is angry at me because I have a different opinion. I might wish that weren't true, but I remind myself that my friend is free to have that response. I can wallow in wishing that weren't true, and being upset about it, or I can take it as an opportunity to reflect on her opinion and mine for understanding. And I can honor us both and learn something new.

The discussion of tragedies helped me. I would like to hear more about this. I rebel inside when I hear that if you are unblocked, you will have joyous energy all the time. Can you have joyous energy in the face of others' tragedies? Compassion seems to suggest that you will sometimes be horrified and sad, even as you accept what is happening. Isn't it sometimes appropriate to feel deep sadness and pain? Thank you for these conversations.

Ram Dass at the end of his life talked about becoming nobody. How do we do that? Michael mentions different ways. We pick up whatever way feels right. If it changes then change with it. With me it’s Ramana Maharshi. I let go and fall back into my sense of myself. The letting go is the key. It’s like dying. I’m not me anymore but instinctively I know what we’re all going through. It takes practice and persistence. Anyone can do this stuff. Most of the time I’m me but when I’m not me it’s such a full of life relief.

I think for people that has suffered severe childhood trauma and low self esteem and worth, I think it’s important to both build up your self esteem at the same time as self effacement. It sounds paradoxical and contradictory. But people who keep themselves small because of low self esteem need also to sort of build up and solidify their ego. But also at the same time Suurender to Life or a Higher Power. It’s a tricky line. I wish everyone here Godspeed on their spiritual journey

I love the teachings. I get a bit confused with some of it. When he says it hits your stuff or your samskaras what does that mean in a practical sense? Just say you were asked out on a date by someone who you really didn’t want to go out with, it that just “my stuff” telling me no? Do you say yes even if you don’t want to? I get confused how to act with others in practice. Dunno…

Upon reflection on Michael’s brilliant discourse, I would go one step further and ask this question: Why do we collect all these blockages inside ourselves in the first place? To my mind, it is because of our fear of our own death (death of our ego and ultimately biological death) and our resistance to it. Only if we really embrace the reality of our own mortality (which might be possible if we have a notion that consciousness is eternal), will we be able to let go of our blockages. According to some philosophers I have read, our fear of our own death underlies everything.

Brilliant question, because resistance to something horrendous is very natural!

I have a saying - be the silent observer - What I mean is, you can observe, but don't allow yourself to be drawn in emotionally. For example, Mainstream Media try to do this to you all the time, as do politicians and even family and friends. They all try to draw you in. They try to make you a part of it by getting you to be invested in whatever it is emotionally. For instance, they try to get you to take sides in whatever. I don't allow this to happen. If you do, all kinds of negative emotions are created within you. I try to explain it like this. I stand on the outside looking in. The only problem I have found is the letting go of some past event. Something that happened years ago, before I I understood this silent observer. I am still tethered to some past events. They are in there and I am trying to let go. To cut the rope to the balloon. So I have progressed since I started practicing being the 'silent observer', but as I have said, some of my past events, are hidden away in my subconscious, and it is those I.need to let go of. After all, they no longer exists except in my subconscious. They are history. They can't affect me in the present. Not unless I let them.

What is missing in this are the hard problems. We are a population overcome by mental illnesses. Suppose you suffer from anxiety attacks. If I am hit with such an attack, that attack really is bothering me. It isn't that I am bothering myself about the attack. When it happens, I am overcome with dreadful sensations. I am not causing the bothering. So this goes against what is being said here. Most of the examples and questions presented are trivial. How about asking tough questions. For example, how to I apply the principles being taught to deal with anxiety attacks?

About shooting. Unfortunately, the majority of people cannot accept something they do not understand or have a logical explanation for. Such occurrences, just like any other universal phenomena are karmically orchestrated. That is, all cosmic events are results of cause and effect. Accepting reality arises from the understanding that the universe is balanced and this balance comes from the naturally existing dualities. For example, day/night, rain/drought, hot/cold, health/illness, life/death etc. Knowing, understanding and accepting the dualities of life in all their manifestations as they happen equals accepting reality. These are the truths that set you free.

Shocktee was mentioned a few times, and instructed to let it come in and do HER work. Who or what is shocktee, a spirit of some sort? ( I believe The Holy Spirit is masculine in the original Hebrew writings. ) Please, can you tell me what this means.
