My best moving tip came from my MIL, a military wife who moved frequently. Ask for two boxes from the mover. These you will pac yourself. In one put pillows, sheets, towels, bath mat. In the second box put your coffee pot, coffee, mugs, some silverware, a pot or two, cereal, paper towels, toilet paper, pen and paper, etc., things you will need right away. Mark these boxes well and you are ready to shower, sleep and eat immediately. This tip helped me immensely, Enjoy your new home, Patti!

Hi Patti, I am 66 years old and live with my daughter who has chronic illhealth. We moved 4 weeks ago and these are the lessons we learnt and Grace and I would like to pass them on to you. 1. Everything takes twice as long as you think it will, 2. You need twice as many boxes as you think you will need. 3. Don't leave everything until the last minute. Better to have spare time at the end. 4. Most importantly take time out in the evening to sit and relax. Good Luck!!! 5. If someone offers to help even just for 10 minutes say Yes!! I’m 68 and we just staged our house it took getting rid of 10++++ years of clutter,stuff I had saved for my daughter that she didn’t want. So my recommendation is don’t take anything that doesn’t bring you joy. I donated most everything because I don’t want other people going through our stuff and offering us a quarter for it. I’m 65 my sons don’t want my STUFF I’ve gathered for 50 years,,, it’s going to GOODWILL one son said,,,, so I give neighbors I like ,,, a Fenton vase,, something I like they might like , I want to pick the people that get my treasures,,, these are pieces of my life,,, it’s killing me,,, I actually have asked my sons to throw some of my things into my grave after they lower my casket,,, get that stuff in there and cover me over 😉❤️

Congratulations on your new home! I totally understand what you are going through, I am 69 yrs young and recently went through a divorce and sold my home. I literally donated the last 40 years of my life, sold my furniture and moved to another state. I decided to just rent for a year until the housing market slows down. You can do the packing, just slowly, don't over do, I made that mistake. Buy boxes at Lowe's or check on craigslist (or any other of that type of site) for someone giving them away. Never too old to be happy in your life. Buying a house, learning to dance or whatever, just do it. Keep what you love, hire good movers and declutter.

Never too old for anything you can mentally physically and financially accomplish one life to live do it your way.

I'm sure there will be a lot of comments about decluttering. When we moved two years ago we got rid of quite a bit. I now find myself occasionally wishing I still had such and such. My point is don't let anyone pressure you to get rid of everything when you move. It IS tough to move - good luck!

I agree , I don’t see why everyone gets rid of everything when they move , unless you’re moving to a smaller hone . It’s only a few more boxes to pack and usually when you throw away something you end up needing it again at some point .

I’m so glad to hear this. Everyone my age is downsizing and I thought about it, but I love my house. I’m a widow & it’s become my very own “she-shed.” I don’t want to down size. It’s perfect for me. Thank you for your transparency. I’m glad your vlog came up in my feed.

MAKE your life better, don't let this "pandemic" freeze you in place. Yes, it (was) is scary but that doesn't stop me from getting out in nature (the best distancing), sunny days, beautiful flowers, birds singing, and seeing others enjoying the same. Valeria please go live your life and enjoy it to the fullest. Be determined about enjoying your life. Do what brings you joy. Try new things. Pack your bags and go vist somewhere for a weekend. I had an older friend that got on a bus and went visited a place she had never been. She took a cab to a hotel and stayed two nights and returned on the bus. So many beautiful places to see. Be kind to yourself and stop looking at your past it can be very depressing. Why look back when you can't change any of it. Hopefully you will have a blast this summer !! Be safe and go enjoy life.

Valeria at 71 I too have felt painfully isolated during the pandemic. It was a motivating factor that caused me to move from my rural location into town so that I can see and interact with more people. Can you find a coffee shop, library or park you can go to everyday? If we are isolated, the first step is walking out the door.

@@chrisfry436 I love Little Poet!!! She has the most amazing attitude. She has such a soothing voice and is the kindest, sweetest lady showing her exceptional photography. I just found her last week and am so impressed with her that I am binge watching all her videos!!!.

My 3 best tips, in addition to having your bed linens and toiletries with you in the car, are: 1. Dismantle the bed in your guest room and stand the mattresses against the wall. Use this room as your staging area for packed boxes and packing supplies (we seniors are notorious for tripping over things that aren’t usually there) 2. Go to Dollar Store and buy assorted colors of stick on dots. Color code each room with these dots. On moving day, give the legend to your mover so they know exactly where each box goes. That frees you up to do other things. 3. Liquor stores are the best place for smaller boxes. They’re free and most of them have the cardboard dividers in them which eliminates the need to wrap glasses, vases, etc. They’re also small and sturdy for heavier things like books. It’s not easy but everyone lives through it somehow. Best of luck!

Hey Patti, so happy for you and Jim. I moved to Spain about 12 years ago and shipped everything here by Cargo ship. The best packers I've ever seen had our entire home packed in one day. They actually customizer each and every box by wrapping chairs, built a wooden box for the puano, etc. Well worth hiring professional movers that prepare your home for shipping your things (even if you are only moving a few hours away. And, at the other end, the unpackers did just as an incredible job putting beds, tables, etc together with nothing broken. That's the best tip that I can give you. Good luck, kisses🥰

We’re in our mid 70’s and just moved to our forever home a week ago. There are great suggestions in the comments. My advise is declutter without mercy. Hire a reputable mover. Have the mover pack your kitchen and any other area that contains a lot of small items. Pack and mark by room. Don’t mix items from one room with another room. Pace yourself. Your new home is beautiful, enjoy.

We bought a house in our 60's when we retired We sold our townhouse that we had downsized to when our son left for college and bought a home near our combined families on a lake. We bought a large home because our son had become I'll and could no longer live alone. Since then our son has gone on to Heaven and we have decided to live in the "big house" where we have many happy memories of our son's years with us. I love this house and although it's way too big, it's just right!

when I was 78 I designed a new home for my husband and I - I had it built, we moved across the country, and we moved in later that year. My husband has since passed away but I am still here with my pup and I can't imagine being any place else. Everyone who passes by my home tells me it is their favorite of all of the houses they have seen .... I tell them it is my favorite too! My advice ..... quit making a big deal of this age business and just go on living your life as though there's no end in sight! Enjoy your new home.

We downsized at 64 and 78 yrs and it was NOT easy....thankfully, my daughter was here to provide much appreciated help!

Wow! Congratulations!! Just two things on top of all the great suggestions below: 1.) first thing, use one bedroom to collect all the things you're considering donating/selling. Then move to packing the stuff that isn't in question. Go into that room occasionally and ponder. No knee-jerk decisions you may regret later. 2.) start packing early in the morning, stop at noon, take a long break. Add a few hours of packing in the afternoon if you have the energy to do so. And go to bed every night not thinking about how much is left to do, but know that it will all get done.

I have no one, absolutely no one to help me declutter or pack, as my only adult child lives 2000 miles away from me, but I'm determined I can do this. I know this will be my last move and the last house I buy, but I will get through this and you will too. You have Jim and probably others to help you along the way and that's wonderful.

Gabyres68 - you and I are the same age and I have just moved from a larger home to a 2-bedroom townhome. I have one female friend who has helped me with sorting and disposing of things. She has been a Godsend. There are so many decisions to make. You can hire men to do the heavy lifting and hauling, but you are the executive decision maker. I was overwhelmed when I started the process in March, but I am now settled in my new place and my large home is cleaned out and on the market. You can do it!

For anyone who needs extra help in decluttering, packing, moving, and then getting unpacked (and has little to no help at hand), there are 'National Association of Senior Move Specialists' certified movers in major cities everywhere who give JUST this kind of help. You can google this and type in your city, and you will find help geared toward helping 60+ citizens get moving. In Austin, "Arranging it All" owned by Zach Baker is a wonderful person....This is a specialized training certification out of Oklahoma City, and they are trained to assist with thinking through 'what to move, what to donate, etc', and then packing it all up...NEXT: Your packed items are taken to your new dwelling, and carefully unpacked FOR YOU. Look for the National Association of Senior Move Managers 'certification' and you need not be daunted by a move in your later years!!

I’m 81 and made the big move to a totally new location in Florida (Lake County) It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done but not sorry I did it! Congratulations! My husband and I moved two years ago. We had to leave our “dream” home because the traffic had gotten so bad that we just couldn’t stand the noise any longer. Omg!!! That is precisely what happened to me. The traffic noise near my “dream home” became unbearable and I sold my house after 14 years 7 months (yea I counted). My new place I bought is a smaller place. A townhouse that still doesn’t quite feel perfect yet and I’ve been here over two years🤣 Watching this encourages me so much. I can still have a dream home!!!

I have a little story for you. My Aunt Fan and Uncle Howard we’re first loves separated by war. They were reunited at 80 years of age and got married. I remember them sitting on the sofa, stars in Fans eyes! They built a house in North Carolina just to their liking. Howard made a lot of their furniture and Fan made the curtains and tablecloths. They were so happy and so In love! You aren’t too old to buy a house....life is lived one day at a time. May you and Jim be as happy as my aunt and uncle for a “lifetime worth of memories and adventures!”

Adding to Debora Moyer’s great advice. The first thing to do when you get in the house is make the bed. You’re going to be working all day and it will be so nice to shower and hit the sheets! Beautiful, beautiful home.

Oh Patty, I found your video today and I think God found it for me. Listening to you talk about house hunting was like listening to my own conversation I have had with my husband! We are in you EXACT same boat. We have been looking for years for a community (55+) or a small community for our final home also. We live in the Central Florida area and don’t mind moving away if it’s the “perfect” location for this 70 yr young woman and 72 yr old husband! I need your help! Any pointers on locations? All we want is a community that is lovely with peace and quiet neighbors. Any suggestions? Thank you for this video. It does give me hope, that just maybe we will be able to find something and we will not have to compromise! I so happy you found what you were looking for and got it! I agree with this statement. When we moved in the beds were made up. We were tired and was so grateful to be able to go to bed as soon as we could.

Yes we just moved in our 60s. We were in a situation where we took a month to sell our house purposely and moved little by little everyday . We put in where we wanted it with each move . Used movers for heavy stuff. I am a cancer survivor and have serious health issues ,hubby has a bad heart but…..God leads his children along . Enjoy

I moved 2 years ago and the best advice I was given was pack like you’re going camping somewhere with a tiny kitchen. Pack clothes/toiletries in a suitcase, pack another suitcase for bedding/pillows/towels, and another suitcase/box for kitchen bare necessities. This way if you’re too tired to start unpacking the same day or two, you can set yourself up and live comfortably as you rest before the big unpacking begins. God bless you on your move! My partner and I bought a house together. We each sold our perspective homes, and downsized 25 years each of possessions. It was exciting, daunting, stressful, and exhausting. We are both 70+. We’ve been in our new smaller home for 18 months, and now that we are settled we are loving it. You are never too old as long as you have the will and some physical and mental strength left. So onward! And congratulations!!! 💙🦋💙

Trust me, at 67, I just did it, I ended up hiring movers, and they helped pack, it is too much. Worth the money, believe me.

Patti, I am a single 77 year old lady and I moved twice since 2016, both moves done on my own with no help from anyone. First from a single family house I had been in for over 20 years to a townhouse in Tampa, then last April during the start of the pandemic from my townhouse in Tampa to a single family house in the North Georgia mountains. Both times I knew I was going to move, and once I made that decision I started clearing out and packing in advance. I would have advised you to start early but that ship has sailed. I bought boxes at a size I could easily move myself so I could stack them from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Tons of packing tape, and tons of bubble-wrap. I was very happy that not one thing I packed broke in transit. Markers to clearly identify what was in each box. Valuables like jewelry to sensitive papers and files, checkbooks, etc. I kept aside and when moving day came I put them in my car before the movers arrived. And then as the Ad says...Just do it!

Yes! I've moved in my 70s and am single. First, declutter and get rid of everything you haven't used or worn in a year, from clothes to pots and pans to makeup. Buy boxes at U-Haul. Fill your own boxes and mark the contents on the outside. Then pay a local mover to move everything. In your car, pack what you immediately need, like sheets for the bed, coffee/coffee maker, and a bottle of whatever cocktail you enjoy at night. The rest falls into place. :) Serious decluttering makes you feel like a spring chicken!

I moved at 65. First I hired a junk removal co. (declutter and be relentless) They took everything I wanted to get rid of.... furniture, grill, clutter, etc etc. It was a huge relief to get rid of everything at once Do not pack in large boxes. They will be too heavy, lable every box so movers know where to put them. Pack and unpack kitchen first. Then unpack one room at a time. Don't try to do it all at once. Move clothing on hangers in the car, not packed. Once you are settled you will reorganize again but on your own time.....

I love listening to you and being your friend. Congratulations on your new house....it is beatiful. Last year we moved 3 in 8 months. We are in our 70s. It was hard work but we were so excited about the new house. My advice: Discard/donate stuff you dont use or want. Then do it again! My husband packed everything and the movers we hired were fabulous. We were wiped out for 2 weeks....we smiled knowing this is our last house and it is lovely. Happy Moving Patty. :)

It is an adorable house. WE moved last year (we move often) during the pandemic. We are both over 70...We paid cash too and that gave us time to make the move over 2 weeks. I did not put our house on the market until we were almost totally ready to call the movers. We loaded the car up everyday with something for the garage or house. I threw away tons of stuff (even though we had moved from out of state only 3 years before). I donated tons too. I went through draws everyday... It was hard because of our age but we worked everyday to meet our goal. Our house sold in 2 days too. Take care of yourselves too.

This house seems perfect, so pretty!! I understand completely and you two are NOT too old!! I'll be 72 next week and I have a horse--family thinks I'm crazy.

That is great! I am 64 and used to ride (strictly for fun in pastures, not a show girl). I know I am not in the physical or mental shape I once was, so I know I can't care for a horse on my own. Maybe I'll find a friend with a calm, old horse I can ride sometime, but I'm happy for any senior who can continue the joy of having a horse.

Patti I,m impressed! I congratulate you and admire the fact that for a woman who is 77 yrs old has the health and stamina to do all that work... Cleaning, cooking, decorating and all that yard work!!! Awfully big house for your age. People look to downsize, etc with low to no maintenance. I am 72 yrs old and 4 times a widow with no children . Just 1 sister brother in law and 2 grown nephews in another state. So I,m on my own till I die. My hat is off to you! Here, s to champagne wishes and caviar dreams!!!

So so happy for both of you! Being raised military, I learned the motto: “If you haven’t used it, lose it!!” In other words, if I have not used or worn something in a year’s time, I donate it. Every year or so, I go through every room in my house following the same principle. It is amazing what we accumulate without realizing it. Congratulations!

@Frances My parents have 3 places full of way too much stuff, but there should be a balance. They were both only children & inherited everything from parents & grandparents & couldn't part with any of it. Our kids don't realize momento in our "clutter" is what triggers memories; the older mind many times can't remember their history or people in it until an object from the past opens the floodgate of memories. My Mama had Alzheimers & her mind was much better surrounded by childhood memories. A table triggered stories of the gift crafted by a family friend & brought smiles to her face. That table gave her a story she could share ... kept communication & positivity in her life. I could get her out of her episodes by asking her about certain objects. This is why being surrounded by familiarity helps. When she went to the hospital & rehab, she was almost uncontrollable because she didn't recognize anything. I would help my Dad sneak in her Maltese, made a Memory book for her with pictures, & brought a throw with fringes that kept her fingers busy & brought down her stress. Anyway, point is balance; take items that mean something, (happy memories) & toss/give away meaningless "clutter" as open spaces are better as we get older. Less furniture for clearances is definitely better!!! Full disclosure, I have not practiced what preaching! I have a storage unit I haven't seen in years while taking care of my parents. It will be a huge project & not sure how to tackle. LOL

I was 60 when I moved from Ohio to Florida. My husband sent me down with my youngest daughter and our dogs. We left a few days before him. Half my house was still in Ohio when he got down here to Georgia. He couldn’t fit it all in the moving tuck. So all I can tell you is to start getting rid of things you don’t need, or want to go to the new house. We had to stay with family, and stay in hotels. We bought a manufactured home to put on the land we bought. I took us over a year to get into our home. We’re settled now, but we don’t have enough storage here. It’s the perfect size for us. But we live on the side of a mountain. Someday we want to move to some flat land and a normal house with lots of closets. It wasn’t easy by any means. It was my youngest daughter and my three small dogs driving eight hours from Ohio to Georgia. My oldest daughter already lived in Georgia. Then my husband came down a few days later with the truck, that had about half our old house in it. We moved from a three bedroom, two and a half baths. We had lived in that house for 27 years, so we had a lot of crap. We made daily trips to the Goodwill, or the dump for weeks before we moved. We would not have had room for the stuff if he would have brought it. We have a storage unit we’ve paid for since we got here two years ago. That is costing us money. I love where I live it’s so quiet and peaceful. But as long as we can find land with a house, it will be fine. I like the space, and no neighbors. So,it was all worth it. And we learned a lot about buying the land, clearing the land, everything that has to be done before you can put a home on your land. I would do it again. I would do things differently. I would buy a manufactured home that had everything I wanted in it. And I would have them use some different contractors,to do the work. You won’t be bothered with anything like that. But just start getting rid of things now. Otherwise, you may move things you don’t want or need for your new place.

Everything about that house….. SCREAMS “FOREVER HOME!!” YOU WILL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE YOUR HOME!!!! I love it!!! It’s so Beautiful!!! What state do you live in???

At 69 I would love to find something just like that in Texas near my daughter and her family.

So I’m not “of a certain age” but I do have several chronic illnesses that affect me physically and also neurologically, I also moved in the middle of cancer treatment. Here’s a tip for you: little bites taken consistently add up to several overwhelming gigantic bites. I also made a packing schedule for the month before my moves that listed day by day what I was to achieve. This ensured I was methodical and worked with intention rather than panicking. Hope this helps somewhat!!

Bless your heart sweetie. Now stay away from vaccinations and walk barefoot as much as you can to (ground or earthing) Also get rid of wi-fi and 5 G. Cancer feeds on sugar. GMO and fast foods are TOXIC they affect your gut fluora and health begins in the gut. Peace and God Bless you dear. I hope this helps you.

Totally agree. I would clear one shelf at a time. My "little bites" cleared a house where we had lived for 33 years. When we moved in my goal was to empty 1 box a day. My move was pretty much frazzle free.

Oh, Patti. I love this house. I can almost feel how you felt when you saw it. It is beautiful. Congratulations! I pray you and Jim have many happy years in that wonderful home.

I am soooo happy for you and your husband. Finding the “home of your dreams” in this market, is really a blessing😇. I lost my husband last year and was thinking about “downsizing” but, after looking at some houses, I realized how much I LOVE our house and, for now, I am staying put. Oh, by the way, I am 75 years old and I live in Sarasota, FL😱

We had downsized 4 times had huge homes now in a 2500sq ft townhouse. We knew immediately it was for us since our health and life had changed. When we bought it I said " this is our last move until we go to the nursing home or to Heaven"! We are so happy with a small front yard, courtyard, large garage and storage, 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, high ceilings, just perfect! Hope you enjoy your home as much as we have ours. 💕😇

That house you want to buy, it looks just like YOU!-- Lovely, serene, and beautiful! I think you will be very happy there! It is move-in ready, in great condition, paint colors etc. very livable. It will give you a new lease on life to give it your special touch! Good for you. Keep us informed and thanks for sharing the photos. It is daunting at first, but just keep at it one room at a time, deciding on what stays and what goes. As things disappear, it will get easier to see your path forward.

My mother just turned 86 years old and she recently moved into a house (from an apartment). She had help from her children but she still did a lot of it herself. You can do this!

Life is short.. live it up! 🥳💖 A friend of mine and her husband, had to get a realtor, to find them a place. There were houses put on line and sold within the hour, in Louisiana. The realtor, located them a place but said, it hasn't gone online yet.. To make the story short.. she and hubby, ended up buying it. She loves her new home. She is in her late 50's. That house that you really wanted... wasn't for you, Patti.. God, had something a lot better! Your new home is absolutely gorgeous! God is so GOOD!

We bought our lake house at 72. I packed myself, getting boxes from Home Depot, lots of tape. One block from our old house! Be ruthless getting rid of stuff...

We managed over the last 14 years to fill a garage with tools is quite neat inside the basement. We don’t like to put stuff down there as the stairs are getting to be a hassle say so that’s nice and clean but not having your garage my husband would be lost, no place to fix the tractor no place to fix the grass cutters no place to put paint etc.. He also managed to fill a 30 x 40‘ barn some of its mine. My gardening starts to grass cutters at tractor rakes and utensils. We’re not giving up our property jobs, we love being outside in the summertime in Michigan. The winner heats up the bar last year. He made cabinets for both bathrooms and two more stands for me very busy and we love it. We have our aches and pains like everyone else but you don’t get through this life being a sissy, happy happy for you. I just found your page on make up about five months ago thoroughly enjoy it you must’ve been breathtaking as a woman in your 40s. I can’t imagine you look like a movie star but I can’t think who. If I seen you in the grocery store and you had your make up walking through I think you were famous smoothie star in the 60s.

I moved at 66 after my husband died after living in our home 35 years. Realize it will be more work than you even think and much less can be packed into a box than you think! You have to decide whats going with you but younger friends and family can physically pack for you if you identify for them whats going with you. Start today, pick a room and mark with colorful tape whats going to be packed to move and diff color for whats going to charity. Do a room or how much your mind can handle each day. You can put tape on each item or tape on whole drawer or kitchen cabinet if everything inside is going to the same place .When you have a bunch of things marked, have someone come over and pack it up. An empty "packing/staging" area really helps. So decide right now what big items or furniture is going to charity or consignment or given to someone else and have them come as soon as possible if you can do without it . I did this with my dining room set and a bedroom and this left those rooms empty so I could have packed boxes stacked there that were going with me. This also gave me an area to have boxes that were in closets for years brought out and i could sit there and go thru them. The biggest thing is to let loved ones who want to help you help or if there is someone who needs to earn extra money to help you do the physical part. But your decision making has to be done by you and its mentally tiring so doing a little all day long helps. It beats having someone try to help you pack and every 2 seconds they have to ask "what about this?" And yes pack a few boxes labeled OPEN ME FIRST with the things you need on the first day in your new house and your personal papers and you put those in your car so they are always with you. Last time we moved I was 65 and my husband 70. The first thing we did when we arrived in the new house was get the bed ready and toiletries in the bathroom. Then coffee pots and essentials in the kitchen. I also had a bag with dishwashing liquid, kitchen towels, water, fruits and snacks. We also brought lunch and dinner with us. The pre move was really hard. Patty, please get some help. My son helped us and a friend of ours because the rest of the children are out of state. The good thing is you are moving to a bigger home. Use a room to store boxes that will not be opened immediately. People advise to put boxes in the rooms they belong and that is fine but if those boxes will be blocking let’s say the kitchen walking pattern put them somewhere else, the garage for example. Clutter makes some people stressed, I am one of them. Take it easy afterwards, do a bit at a time. At least your house is moving ready and that is a major plus. Congrats on your gorgeous home!

Alma, I am the same way. Being surrounded by clutter creates clutter in my mind ... told it is a characteristic of a creative mind. That is being kind, I just can't function in "chaos". Any suggestions for me? I put all my possessions in storage to go out of state & help my elderly parents, which ended up being years with Mama's stroke, broken hip, rehab, etc. My Mama passed & then my blessed Daddy passed 6 months ago & I have lots of items I have to remove from their houses in 2 states and an out of state storage unit in the state I plan to go back to now. Have no clue how to sort. I am alone now & not a spring chicken.

I moved at 68. Excellent advice Alma Miranda! Putting boxes in the rooms they will be used does promote clutter. I couldn't get to my stove for ages. Having them in a centralized room and working from there is a much better idea.

The house is gorgeous and looks so peaceful. Good luck with everything

Yes, I sold my home of 23 years, but I was honored to have a daughter and her husband and 2 grandsons nearby, as well, that helped me with the move. I, of course hired a moving company to move me, but my daughter and her BFF from kindergarten came two weekends for both two days of the weekend and did all of my packing. I only had 28 days to get ready to move, so I started cleaning out closets. I made so many trips to Goodwill, giving things away. The poor garbage men must have thought I would never quit putting tons of trash out on the street! But, cleaning out the closets first and getting them cleaned out was the most satisfying part that allowed me to visually see progress! Another essential thing I did that helped me tremendously, was having my cleaning lady to come to the house “after” the move to have her clean the oven, and the entire house. Because by that time, you’ll not have any energy to do that yourself. Save your strength for things you will be wanting to do at the new home. But, the surprise ending for me was on the day after the move, I had the closing on my old house and by the time I arrived back to my new home, my daughter and her best friend had already unpacked my things, everything in the cabinets and closets and all that was left to do was the hang pictures on the wall. In walking in the front door, they were both sitting on the sofa, relaxing as if they hadn’t done a thing!! They said that they were waiting on me to get back, so I could tell them where I wanted to hang the pictures! God blessed me tremendously in that move and you and Jim will find the blessing in your move, as well. Things get done and while you are doing it, it all falls in place. It’s the anticipating that will exhaust you the most, so just relax and know that it will all get done, and you will both be so happy and content when it’s all over! 💕💞

Obviously write the contents of each box on the outside. One thing I did was to buy colored labels. Have a different color for each room. Easy to see where the boxes go! Congratulations!

Yes. I did this AND hung piece of paper on each doorway naming the room with the colored label used for that room. I also gave movers a floor plan and each room was colored with the label color, and furniture was drawn in place so they knew where it was to go. The moving co. foreman stood at front door to be sure each man took boxes to right room. Also, they loaded boxes in truck first so that furniture could be unloaded first at new house. That way there wouldn't be boxes sitting where furniture was to go. This alleviated the need for me to be run ragged showing each man what to do with each box and piece of furniture. Yes, purge before you move as best you can, but don't stress if you can't complete that before moving time. Purging is the ideal, but more important is to stay healthy, excited but relaxed. I'm 77 and my last move was my 45th in my life. If you have time, go to KZread The Homes I Have Made. She is military wife and has both free and small cost printables for download that are imperative to have for a move. Includes things you might not think of, like notifying all utilities (dont forget garbage if that's a pay extra service) in advance for cutoff and turn on; contact your present physicians, dentist, etc. to alert them of record transfers and ask if they have any referrals in new area; if you have other service providers, do same. If at all possible, have house closing at least two weeks before condo closing. This gives you time to make several trips in your cars before actual move. Also gives you time to clean condo ( HIRE SOMEONE!) after you move out but before you hand over keys. This is just a nicety: If you really like your buyers (if you've been able to meet before closing), leave them a little house warming gift, maybe a listing of all the utility companies with phone numbers (your realtor or Chamber may have Welcome packets you could get), names/numbers of service people/condo association contacts; info on any work done with date and names, special keys, tricks for anything that might need special care, etc. Bless y'all, know this is just one scene in the movie of your life, and nothing is more important than the love you and Jim share! Flexibility, rest, proper diet and lots of water!

I moved when I was 50. I packed a couple of boxes a day, made a few trips to donate some items, tossed stuff on trash days, and hired movers. All went well little by little. Congratulations, the house looks wonderful.

Well, I can see you in that home! Totally get why you fell in love with it! Congratulations! Can't wait to see what you do with it. I moved from NC to Texas 2.5 years ago. I was 70 and had not moved in 16 years and had accumulated way more than I realized. Also, I was moving from 1,750 sq ft and a double garage to a condo of1050 sq ft and no garage. It was more exhausting for me than any other move I have made, and I've moved out out of state several times. Your move will be easier because you are gaining lots of space and storage and you have Jim. I did it all myself except for the garage. My son came out and helped me with that. My advice: 1) Start decluttering yesterday! That way you can pace yourself a bit. 2) Get someone to help you pack. It's backbreaking work and if you use new boxes, you'll have to get them unfolded and taped. Sounds minor but I ended up with 120 moving boxes and went through more packing paper and tape than I anticipated. Because I was moving interstate, I ordered new boxes, tape, etc. from a local YouHaul store. You can also get new boxes and moving stuff from Lowes Home Improvement and Home Depot. Buy more than you think you'll need because those places will accept returns. 3) Try to find someone who recently moved and offer to take their boxes off their hands. I see posts on the NextDoor app all the time - people wanting moving boxes and people wanting to get rid of moving boxes. 4) The kitchen will likely take you twice as long to pack as any other room. 5) KZread's Girl and the Word (Ayn) has posted a video of moving tips and some are very clever. 6) I got this one from an online article written by an Army wife and it save me so much time. Get a 3-ring binder or something similar and organize all of your moving info in there, such as your timetable, notes on changes of address, things to remember, last minute mail/bills you don't want to lose, etc. That last minute mail is what saved me. I never would have found it in the moving mess. I put clear vinyl 3-ring page protectors in there (Office Max). I included a small notebook where I could record notes on when the utilities would be hooked up, etc. Designate a pen to stay in then. Label the notebook on the outside or buy a red one that will be easy to spot. Keep this info with you at all times - don't pack it! 7) If you can, ask the sellers to leave the owner's manuals for appliances, etc. 8) Make sure you and Jim eat well before and during the move to keep up your energy. Stay hydrated. Gather healthy, easy to eat snacks or frozen meals to use when the going gets tough. That's all I can think of right now. So happy for you guys!

What a beautiful story. And what a beautiful home to live happily ever after in. A reward for a life lived to the fullest! So happy for you. My advice...I’d waste no time in moving prep. Go through one room at a time. Decide what to donate, what to gift, what to sell, what to trash and move on to the next. When the mover comes in to pack, you’ll know that everything they pack is something you want to take to your lovely new home. That’s what I did. I was ruthless as far as the discards were concerned. I knew I didn’t want any “maybe” items and I’ve had no regrets. Congratulations!

I went through everything in our house,had a huge garage sale ,donated lots to the community, hired movers to pack and move us...it was the best & easiest move we’ve ever done at that was at the age of 67; from a large acreage to a townhouse I knew I couldn’t take everything..It was the best and time consuming I don’t miss all the boxes of items and clothes, shoes etc ..I was done with stuff.. Take your time get help, we hired packers and had 2 huge moving trucks they did it all ...Loved it won’t move again now 72 and we love our 1700 sq foot home and the small community is heaven💕💕💕💕Good luck just remember to breath and smile 💕💕

So excited for you. We’re about to do the same - moving from our sweet small condo to a house in this overpriced FL market 😜 exhausting to think about, but can’t wait! Love the advice of making the bed first thing, bringing all our immediate needs like ☕️ in the car and getting strong but manageable boxes with dividers from the liquor store. Amen to saving our backs!!

So happy for you and Jim. Tips: Write each room down in the new home and walk around your current home and write down which piece of furniture you will take with you in each room. Pack one room at a time, starting with the least used and the Kitchen last. That is what I did and it worked wonders!!! :)))

I'm 66 years old and my husband of 22 years married and 23 years together has left me just be he wants to be single to come home when he wants to leave when he wants to,which he pretty much did any way.We are going to sell our home of 22 years of it being my home to me and going to have to start my life all over again , But with God's Help I'm going to be just fine.

Im so sorry. I wish you all the best. My ex left me for a 20 year old girl. I then decided to never again loose my time for a man. Its just not worth it and now Im so much happier!

Congratulations! It’s an absolutely beautiful home and your heartfelt response was the same as ours when we found our home in a small coastal town in Southern California. We moved from our home of 34 years in the Los Angeles area in 2019. We are in our 70’s and moved closer to our son and his family. We are frugal. We used a website called Hire A Helper and were able to read reviews and recommendations of workers. We hired three different teams of two men each to help at different stages of moving. One team we hired twice, we liked them so much. This saved us a lot of money! Instead of hiring a moving company from start to finish, we were able to pack/store in stages. We found an economical storage site which held our stuff for three weeks between the closing of our escrows! And we went fishing in the Sierras during those weeks!!! We love our new home and location!! We are SO THANKFUL. This is so far from how we grew up! Blessed Boomers, Glenn and Charlene

Patti, sounds like you were able to find your perfect forever home. I have been selling real estate for 43 years and have made many moves. The last move I made was out of state and I was downsizing as well. My best advice is to take one area at a time. Have a box/boxes for packing and labels etc. Also have bins or bags marked donate or sell. I found an online auction company, called MaxSold, to sell much of my better stuff and donated a lot! I don't know if they are in your area or not but you can check it out. I'd also suggest you research some reputable consignment stores for some items that may be more valuable that you no longer want. I kept asking myself whether I loved the item, whether it fits my current life and whether I have the room for it in the new home. Be totally honest.. Sometimes you need to let go of stuff in order to make room for something you may love even more. It's a good exercise for everyone...even those who have no intention of moving...stuff can make one feel nervous or anxious and the clearing is transformative. I am in my late 60s and made my major move all by myself. Don't think about how difficult the process is...think of it as part of your journey and enjoy the ride..

So happy for you patty,you are so blessed to be able to afford such a nice place. You have had a wonerful life with nice homes,vacations,clothes, jewelry, things alot of use could never have so thanks for sharing.

The house is gorgeous. My advice is to pack a little everyday. Stay focused and stay calm. Everything is going to be just fine.

Beautiful house Patti, I know you and Jim will be so happy there-yes you just have to have a certain feeling and you know you are in love with a place-wishing you lots of luck with the move and I am anxious to see everything!!

Wow!!!! You scored big time! I think I'd be busting out in tears seeing it for the 1st time. As a retired Realtor, these are the gems that only come along once in a great while. How exciting!

Oh, Patti! This was the most wonderful story you have ever told. I was enchanted. And, when I saw the pictures of your new home, tear sprang to my eyes. I am so terribly happy for you. You deserve this. My goodness, I'm overwhelmed. I did move in my older years, but it was to a smaller home, not a larger one like you are. I moved into an over 55 apartment complex. It's a wonderful place, with a media room with a huge tv, workout room with the equipment, a hair salon, laundry rooms in each apartment, a community room with a full kitchen and an elevator. I love it here, but the apartments are small. Mine is a one bedroom and it's a nice apartment. But, I moved from a large two bedroom and I had to pass on many, many things. I even have a beautiful butcher block topped cupboard on wheels in my garage. I didn't have the heart to part with it and there's no room to put anything else in my kitchen. The only advice I can give you is to make sure that each and everything you take with you be something you absolutely want, so you move into your new home with a clean break. Besides, some day your children will be going through your things, having to decide what to do with them. I want to make this the least of a burden on them that I can and I know you do, too. xo~linda

I am 71 and have just moved into a 2 bedroom townhouse from a large lake house. Like you, I felt I personally had to sort through every piece and decide it’s fate. Luckily one of my children wanted most of my cherished antiques. But that was just the start. My garage at my new place is full of boxes to be unpacked - but I can take my time. I feel another purge coming on.

Absolutely beautiful ! the bathroom, the placement of the window in the bathroom ,the patio ,the huge windows and wide open doors, the beautiful entryway with the chandeliers ,the kitchen ,adorable! I call you BLESSED! We built a home in our 60’s. After we got the key ,on a 4th of July weekend we got one of the kids to help us bring over the bed mattress only , linens for bed n bath n packed just what we needed to stay comfortable till the rest got there n we didn’t care if the rest ever got there. We were two kids, giggly, excited and having fun. Make it FUN, enjoy the moment n each other. God Bless!

Ohhhhh Patty, it is just beautiful. I can see you all being so happy there. I truly believe you just have to begin by telling yourself, "This is going to SUCK." LOL!! We have moved many times over the years, and moving is never easy. Be as kind to yourselves as possible and begin early and pack slowly so you do not have to rush. Do one room at the time, and label every box with the room it belongs in and a number, also making a list with that number and box. That way when the movers come you can be sure that all boxes as they are brought into your new home are checked off of your list. Go ahead and start gathering boxes, packing paper and tape. If you have things you haven't used in over a year, try your best to get rid of it. I wish I lived close to you and we could have a packing party :-)) Only do what you can do in one day. If there is any painting etc to be done in your new house, try to have all of that done before you move in. Any valuables, take with you in your car. I am so excited for you.

Congratulations! After my kids left home we sold our little cottage that I raised the kids in, and we UPSIZED. It was a very good choice for us. We love our home. Our kids thought we were crazy! We are in our seventies also. Enjoy your new space!

I almost cried when the owner said you could have the mantle! I felt your complete joy. Me & my husband are 60 and will be doing our major move this time next year hopefully as our retirement forever home.😘🇬🇧

Wow. Just wow! You and your husband are still in good health, your giving me hope for my future in home buying again, God willing. We’ve been renting for 10 years and I really want to buy the home we’re renting. Our lives have been up side down for the past 4 years but it’s more stable now. We’re in our 60’s, I’ve had some health issues/concerns but I’m trusting God that I’m going to be fine, he’ll take care of me. So my hats off to you for buying such a majestic home, no telling what it cost with housing prices soaring! It’s a beautiful home. I don’t envy the packing up and moving! 😱 can’t wait to see pictures of it once you’ve decorated it!

We have lived in 9 different homes since we have been married. Each one had dear sweet memories for us. I had a picture of each home and put them in a frame (one large frame with a cutouts for photos). It is nice to stand in front of those framed photos and think about memories made in each home.

Your new house is GORGEOUS! I down sized from a 1600 sq ft 3 br 2 bath house with a 2 car garage to a 1 br apt. I love my apt. I've had many homes, but this is my first ever apt at age 65. I am single and don't miss the upkeep. I was very particular as to having my house just right inside and out. I do miss my garage (only cuz I live in the south and it keeps the car cooler and cleaner), and the laundry room. Glad I have a w/d in apt. I donated 12 large pickup trucks full of furniture and misc. stuff to a battered womans' shelter. (I was still working, and had no time for garage sales). Amazingly, the shelter had just placed a woman in an apt. and she had nothing. This turned out good for her, and for my soul. I knew I needed new living room furniture within a year or two anyway, and my old kitchen set wouldn't work in the apt. I also wouldn't have room for all the paintings, rugs and misc. things I had. Who needs 4 sets of corning ware? I started purging a year before putting it the house on the market. I was given very little time to pack for this move. It would normally take me a month alone every day and all days on weekends while working. I hired a younger woman who cleaned my house to help me a few times to pack and some friends helped a couple of times too. I found Lowes best for boxes and bubble wrap. Get tape and wrapping paper from Wally world. You will need twice as much time and supplies to pack as you think you will need. Find a reliable, clean, careful mover even if you have to pay a little more. (You don't want someone else's bedbugs). You may want to ask them what they charge to pack. You might find it worth your while cuz purging alone can be exhausting. Enjoy your life at your new beautiful home! I am not far from the gulf coast. It has beautiful beaches enjoy them!

Congratulations! Buying and selling real estate is such an adventure. I’ve thought about opening a business as a downsize consultant. I use a sticker system to begin. Red - not keeping. Yellow - not sure. Green - a keeper. I just do a walk through each room with those circle stickers you can get at the dollar store. Don’t think too hard. Do a second walk through and pack up the reds you are certain and move them out! I donate everything I can - let’s keep stuff out of the landfill. Then go through again. I am always downsizing. If I haven’t touched or used something, or noticed something in 6-12 months - do I need it?

Homes here sell in days, with multiple all-cash offers well over asking (into the stratosphere!), so it's good to remember that every one of them has a story like yours. We moved here 5 years ago -- hired a local company for the big items only, boxed the smaller stuff ourselves and purged like crazy. Unpack thoughtfully and purge some more once you get into that beautiful new home. Having less is so calming, & is a good way to "be kind" to yourself!

I was moved to tears after hearing about the mantel. This home is you...I am beyond thrilled! We moved 3 times in 6 months ( we had a permanent home in Oregon, but spent summers down south, in a gated community (condo)..sound familiar? Sold that, moved what we didn't sell into a storage up here. Really had no intention of selling our little home of 40 yes, but we were out driving one day saw an open house and wah lah, bought it! So...had to sell our older home, and move again. We were at the time 62 and my husband 79. We did it all ourselves...pickup and car! Before moving into new home, I had gone over and cleaned it all myself( it was clean, but no one cleans like we do..lol) then had huge garage sale...and then donated what didn't sell. Again alot of work, but didn't want "stuff" going into new. We have now been here almost 3 years, only moving out feet first!

At 73, my husband and I are moving from Texas to South Carolina. The sale of our home happened in 3 days. The lady bought it after her agent did a walk-through on FaceTime. In hindsight, we should have started packing month’s ago. With our family’s help we decided to move into an apartment while we scour the area to find our “forever” home. We are one week away from the move and I’m getting a little anxious. It is sometimes overwhelming, but fortunately, we have a lot of help before the professional movers arrive. Oh my.....that home is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! There is not one thing I would change that's for sure! Sorry, I can't give you any packing or moving advice because we are still in our "little starter home" that we purchased in 1973! Our children are both in their 40's now, so we're back to just the two of us, now well into our 70's, and rather happy not to have a bigger home and yard to manage. What an exciting new journey....it will be daunting as you say.....but oh so worth it in the end! Loved your whole house hunting story, and my heart was beating fast right along with yours, as you were speaking of the excitement and disappointments....but it was meant to be. I bought my present home in Eureka Springs, Arkansas (Holiday Island area) almost five years ago as a single 65 year old. Yep, I'll be 70 in August. I've a view of the mountains off my massive deck which I container garden on. I've a nice flat yard that I spend at least an hour everyday caring for which in turn cares for me. My renovations are still in process which I'm very much enjoying as it takes living in your space for a year to really get the feeling for the changes that suit your lifestyle. So enjoy the process of releasing your creativity. How exciting! Tip #1 donate clothes, items that you no longer love & use before the move to lighten your load. I must've filled my suv 3x's doing just that. WOW! what a liberating feeling to not move so much. I even donated my bed, washer, dryer as they would pick them up so I was free to buy new for my new house.

We moved a little less than 2 years ago. We're in our mid 60's. Not only did we move a household of things but we also have a home-based business we had to move! Also, we had to renovate the house (by ourselves...no contractors!) before we could move in. And we had to also renovate the entire 2 acres of landscaping (which includes an orchard and a vineyard) by ourselves too! As a former interior decorator, the best tip I could give you is this: Know ahead of time what style you want to be doing in your new home and then sort through all your existing things. If it doesn't work, or if you don't love it, donate it or sell it. We did that. Got rid of TONS of stuff. Then after we moved, little by little I found different things to enhance my interior style. Good for you moving and finding your forever home! You can do it! 🥰🤗
