My mother has several health issues, and she's been about 70 lbs overweight for years as she's a serious foodie. For health reasons, she decided to adopt a healthier diet limiting white flour and sugar. She incorporates one soup meal per day. Over the last few months she lost 40 lbs and feels much better as all of her numbers have come down, and she's not done yet. Mom will be 94 in January.

No statins here, I had a major blockage and they put a stent in. Everyone is different and vegetarianism didn't work for me but Carnovire did. I'm down 80 lbs and no longer on any meds of any kind. I was also a type 2 diabetic, and all my blood work is now normal, and I no longer have to take insulin. Patti, you do what works for you, and ignore the haters and their internet medical degrees. :)

I went on a 20 hr fast and 4 hour eating window 6 months ago. It was hard at first but now seems easy. We took all sweets out of the house. No cookies, chocolate, sugar in drink or cakes and pies. Occasionally we splurge but rarely. I’ve lost 15 lbs. comfortablely in my size 14 jeans. If I would get good with cycling it would get even better. Congratulations! My favorite treats are popcorn or a baked apple with cinnamon no sugar.

Timely this video. I'm 69 years old and vegan. Over the past year or so, and I'm not sure why; probably because I have a good blood pressure monitor, I decided to go ahead and do a reading for the hell of it. It was higher than normal. Last July I started tracking it every day and the numbers were in the 130's and 140's even the odd 157 and instead of taking good note, I just kept tracking and living my normal life. I wasn't fully aware of what levels Stage 1 and 2 hypertension were. My bad, I should have looked that up. I thought that because I was vegan, under 130 pounds and fairly good with light workouts, I didn't really have to worry. What I didn't realize was that I was too inactive, ate too many processed foods, including potato chips (often), all which contain high levels of salt. Add to that, I didn't drink enough water. All that changed when I got off the plane in Ontario to visit my daughter, and discovered my BP had soared to 190. My daughter took me right to the hospital. By the time I got to triage, my BP read 201! Blood was taken to ensure my kidneys were not the problem, which thankfully they were not and I was given a prescription. I wasn't too happy with how quickly that was taking the readings downward so I decided to look up: 1) the biggest causes of high BP and the 2) the best things you can do to fix it. I cut out all added sodium from my diet instantly and counted up any that showed up in the foods I ate, determined to keep the count below the recommended amount of 1200 gr. I started drinking a lot of water in the day, added fibre rich whole foods and cut out most all of the processed foods. I started walking, every day for 40 minutes. We have bears here back on Vancouver Island so I decided to get a desk treadmill that I could walk on while watching KZread videos. Very quickly my BP readings were in the 120's and below where they should be. I just want to point out here, that I felt absolutely FINE throughout this entire episode. No ill effects physically AT ALL! When they call this the silent killer they do so for very good reason. People die every day from this and I'm sure a lot of the stats point to high BP as the prime culprit. Gladly I was able to stop the meds a week after I got home and tracking this, I seem to be doing really well. Thanks for this video. Everyone should be tracking BP for sure!

Wow, It's a good thing she got you to the hospital! I live in Ontario too, and we have an excellent cardiac unit in our local hospital. My husband had a 99% blockage, about 10 years ago, and had to be fitted with 2 stents. They call his type of cardiac issue, the 'widow-maker'. If he hadn't gone to the doctor, he'd likely be dead long ago. High blood pressure is nothing to take lightly! I'm glad you're better!

Dropping refined carbs will drop ur insulin production and allow your kidneys to process salt again. You will then lose excess water and your hypertension will go. Its not always as simple as blaming Salt.

@@Britbabe53 you will likely end up with no meds reqd for bp then. (assuming you are on them now). When back to say 110 / 78 use salt as u wish. Salt to taste. You will see when ur healthy and all working again as u should, salt doesnt alter ur bp much at all. If you crave Salty food like chinese, drink water with it and ur bp wont move.

@@thespear4083 poison, really? Where’s the data to support your statement? Oh let me guess you read it in some liberal newspaper. Fact of the matter is that statins will remodel plaque that has accumulated in your arteries. This process of plaque deposition starts around the age of 12 thanks to our all American poor diet of fast food and processed food. Think about this….you are born with an LDL of 25. It doesn’t stay that way for too long again thanks to the American diet and bad genes. So you lost 13 lbs. Bravo, unfortunately that doesn’t mitigate a life time of plaque accumulation. Then again, if you made it to 80 with your high cholesterol it’s really too late to derive much benefit by adding a statin now. Just hope your plaque are nice and solid like concrete so they don’t break off and embolize to your brain, heart or lungs. Let this be a lesson, check your cholesterol levels early in life and get on statins as soon as your LDL is over 70.

I disagree with you. The fact that Patti has turned her results around without meds is an important fact that needs to be discussed. Too many people jump at taking medication the minute a doctor introduces it to them. The problem today is people don't want to put in the effort to resolve issues because it's so much easier to take a pill. However, those pills start to cause other issues. I watched my father suffer for 10 years before he died because the meds made him miserable. On the other hand, my mother refuses to take any medication and is in her late 90s and still healthy. She eats lots of raw foods instead of meds. I think that says something. I'm in my mid 70s, and also do not take medications and doing fine.

Thank you for this post. At 72, I don't take any medications either. I've followed a Mediterranean eating plan for most of my adult life with years of no animal products thrown in. Until a serious bout of depression earlier this year, I walked almost every day and maintained my weight easily. But like you, I grew tired of it all and allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted and didn't walk. In October, I decided to be kinder to myself, and I started walking again (love those endorphins!) and stopped eating most processed foods, and went back to a Mediterranean style of eating, letting go of 12 lbs of excess weight. Now, all I have to do is find a new doctor. Living in SW FL, I'm finding this much more difficult than losing weight. Your post has encouraged me to persevere and find the right practitioner for me, and I'm hopeful I'll succeed. Congratulations on your success! And thank you for your honesty and for sharing your thoughts. I wish you all the best! Take good care!

I finally got so sick of seeing how I looked in pictures (I never could see myself until it came to a photo)that I had to do something. Finally doing what you did but food has become soooo expensive! I cook from scratch. Grocery is my biggest expense! Even with no wine, no surgery things and no processed foods. Lots of veggies, protein (chicken or fish or eggs), and some fruit. Thank you for sharing your experience with us Patti, I’m 61 and have been battling the high triglycerides mainly and high cholesterol since I was in my 30’s . But only very minimal. The past few years with so much sadness and stress in my life my momma passing and my kitty Bella my best friend passing and I have PTSD REALLY bad I am a sugar addict not so much salty chips I don’t like salt to much but it was the sugar., cakes , cookies , oh and chocolate. So I did the same thing you did and completely stopped sugar, pasta, white bread etc. I lost 25 lbs and went into have my annual bloodwork and all my cholesterol numbers were normal and my triglycerides went down 110 points. I felt great , but unfortunately with all the sadness and stress I picked up those sugary treats way to often so I know I need to cut down so I don’t ruin all the hard work I did to drop those numbers. And I did gain some weight rite back UGGGGG. So now I’ll save my treats for special occasions. I do eat low sugar oat meal often with chia seed and walnuts and almonds. And blueberries. I love my Decafe coffee and use Stevia, it’s a natural sugary substitute and just fish or chicken, broccoli 🥦 lots of it. Lol Cheerios and unsweetened almond milk. Sugar free greek yogurt. Roasted Fresh garlic with my meals . Berries are great for you too. And a small banana in my cereal or oat meal. Also have organic almond butter. So any who I need to get back on the great track I was on . And like you I did have a treat now and then. I’m saving my treats now for the holidays. Oh and I have become a label reader. I look at saturated fat and cholesterol. Try to stay with foods that say zero saturated and zero cholesterol . I can chat about this all day with you but just wanted to share. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤lots of peace love and light

I take a low dose of Statin generic Crestor 5 mg has hot problems running my family and I don't have any problem with cholesterol. I'm not into salty chips or cookies or cakes or candies never have been just once in awhile but I think that's because sugar diabetes is on all sides of my family and I've never been someone that eats ice cream and cookies and salty potato chips because the salt is not good for us. Great work you're so lucky to have a husband that cooks every single meal that's a blessing in itself.

Thanks for sharing. It’s often in the little things; small changes. I am not a vegetarian, but have recently cut out my beloved milk, sugar, cut way down on butter, and started reintroducing daily fruit and vegetable shakes. Doing these simple things alone, has enabled me to lose 10 pounds in the past month. Now, that was not my goal, it just happened that quickly. But, now, it is levelling off to about 1 1/2 lbs. a week (my goal). I have had a heart attack, do have high blood pressure, (but normal cholesterol) for which I have taken a long list of medications, since I was 40. I am now 63, and want to try to not have to take so many drugs, and or at least cut the doses. Like you, I like to do a lot of research in respect to my health, rather than relying solely on a medical professional’s opinion. This comes from the experience of a doctor not handling a medical condition of mine properly in the past. As a patient, it is good to advocate for yourself.

I take a 30 min walk a day and take no processed food. This life style that I do is only in the last 6 months. My doctor decided I should have a blood test . I was as adamant as anyone could possibly be about not taking statins until my doc went over all the risk factors that I fell under so I finally relented. I have been on Rosuvastatin for several years now and have not noticed ANY difference in the way I feel or experienced any side effects. I think the one thing that made the decision for me was the high risk of stroke. I would rather have a heart attack and die than to have a stroke as I have seen the aftermath of that. I agree it must be a personal decision for each person and we are so lucky today that we have the many resources to do our own research in order to make the best decision for us.

Pattie congrats on the weigh loss. Life gets interesting as we get older doesn't it? I remember each time I've gotten news I wasn't happy about from the doctor. Every year seems to bring some unwelcome news. Some I can't do much about some I can. Funny tip. We went on a cruise to the Mediterranean 2 weeks ago. People asked if we gained the usual cruise weight. We laughed and explained that with the constant walking up and down what seemed like a thousand stairs and walking all over we both lost weight. So walking does work for weight loss folks. I'm back to a less strenuous life style which is kinder to my 70 year old arthritic and worn out bones. And back to watching my eating choices too. But it can be done.

I actually stumbled on your blog this morning and so glad that I did! I am 70 and had a wake up call like this on my semi-annual check up this week. I have unfortunately inherited high cholesterol from my mother. I am fairly thin and already walk 5 times a week , yet my cholesterol has reached an all time high. My family practitioner wants to put me on a statin as well and having been on one years ago, I refused. My mother has always taken statins and now has dementia. When I tried them my feet and legs hurt so bad I could barely walk and this was when I was only 50! I have never considered going directly to a cardiologist but after hearing your story I plan on finding one to hopefully get a second opinion with guidance and have also been researching for a heart healthy and anti inflammatory diet. I realize That too much sugar in my diet is probably a huge contributor to my current state. Good luck with your plan and thanks for the inspiration I have needed!❤

Congratulations on finding out something wasn't right and doing something about it instead of ignoring it. It's not always easy, but you are doing it! Holidays have changed for all of us I think - I say for the better!! LOL I am selfish in that I put nothing ahead of my health. Thanks for sharing and for the awareness. I am sure you are helping a lot of us...

I am so glad to have found your channel. Your story is my story also. I will be 80 in January, and I am also trying to avoid going on station's. I have lost almost 10 lbs and have been walking more and watching my diet. I start each day with a half of cup of oatmeal. Doing good most of the time. I have until February before my next appointment. You are certainly encouraging to others.

Hi Patti, I have missed you pleased you’ve gotten your health check. Thanks for sharing , I’m 75 next month and have suffered HBP since early 30’ s which is hereditary, so I’m stuck on BP meds. This last 12 months I lost 12 kilos for my health through IF. The extra energy I have is amazing it’s a lifestyle of eating and I’m enjoying it just as you are enjoying your lifestyle, we live what suits us we are all so different. Look forward to your next session. Take care Margie 💕🌺
