Are we the Angels of the Earth? | Colette Miller | TEDxCulverCity

Colette Miller explains how her acclaimed Global Angel Wings Project went from an artistic effort to relieve Angelenos from daily ad bombardment to a social phenomenon.
Colette Miller has been painting and traveling the world since finishing VCU Art School in Virginia. Lacking funds, Colette survived by picking olives in Crete, working at a falafel stand in Israel, hitchhiking and sleeping on the side of the road when necessary. Throughout her journey, she continued to pursue her love of painting.
The Angel Wings Project began in Los Angeles, the City of Angels, in 2012. It started as a spontaneous act, an expression of hope, a gift to the community, painted on a public wall without permission. Colette’s first set of wings took flight on their own. Passers-by began posing / taking pictures in front the wings and sharing them on social media. Soon thereafter, people from all walks of life captured and shared their very own wings portraits. Colette began receiving requests to create more sets of wings from business owners, non-profit organizations and individuals. Colette’s wings have taken her to Kenya, Australia, Mexico and across the United States.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

"The wings represent our inner angel. They represent that even though we all come from scarred lives, we all are human, we all have trauma and drama, and we are all guilty of doing the wrong thing so many times, I think that we even for a moment can really be the good on this earth and the angels. If it isn't going to be us, who else is there? We are the custodians of this planet. I don't think we actually have time to talk about what's another possibility." So beautiful.

The Global Angel Wings Project Colette Miller created the Global Angel Wings Project in 2012, in the streets of Los Angeles, the City of Angels. They were painted to remind humanity that we are the angels of this earth. They are human sized interactive street art, wings that people take photos with and thus become part of the art. The first pair were just street art but the response was natural, immediate, and spontaneous - from people of all sorts and backgrounds, both those who were photographed and those who asked for the wings. Colette has painted wings globally - Kenya, Australia, Taiwan, France, Cuba, Juarez Mexico, and more, and many in the USA. Though some are commissioned and others gifted, the wings themselves are free to the world, never owned by anyone, not even Colette, though they are of her provenance and her work.

Well in the beginning, maybe angels didnt really have any idea of who is the god or light bearer or any label that you want. They were just clueless and innocent people that are about to learn their lessons in life. Life is trial and error. No need to be ashamed forever if you made mistakes. No need to carry that baggage all your life. We all do made mistakes, i make them and you make them but whats important is that we're learning and moving forward

The earth would be fine with us but better without our 10,000 year old civilizations, especially with the increase in population in the 20th century.
