The Nurtured Parent Revolution: Trauma Transformed | Patrice Lenowitz | TEDxBergenCommunityCollege

Family courts across the nation routinely fail the most vulnerable in our society; mothers and their children in crisis seeking a life free from abuse. In 2012, the U.S. Department of Justice released a study (Saunders Report) that found the standard and required domestic violence training received by judges, lawyers, and custody evaluators, does not adequately prepare them to handle abuse cases. Inadequately trained professionals tend to believe the myth that mothers frequently make false allegations. However, most contested custody cases are domestic violence or child sexual abuse cases in which abusers have been allowed to use the courts to regain control over the victim, and bankrupt the safe, primary caregiving protective mother. Per the United Nations Attorney General, the most common form of violence experienced by women is physical violence inflicted by an intimate partner.
Patrice is a domestic violence survivor, victims’ rights advocate, activist, public speaker and playwright. Of paramount importance to her work is advocating for victims' rights, and to unravel why our courts routinely fail the most vulnerable in our society, women and children in crisis seeking a life free from abuse. Her passion and leadership have led to new child protection legislation in New Jersey, and it is built upon the premise that the rights, safety, health and wellbeing of our nation’s women and children must become our top priority in law and society.

It is not just about training. It is misogyny and patriarchy. Many know exactly what they are doing.

and they purposely don't have the adequate training in these crucial issues because it won't be used anyway, doesn't matter..... by design. They know exactly what they are doing, but they can always default to lack of "training" to excuse their egregious actions. Time to hold them all accountable!

This is my story and my children’s story. What you just explained is us. My daughter aged out of family court and has been vocal about the abuse at the hands of her father. It’s still not enough to protect her brother, my son, from the family court system. He’s still with our abuser despite his sisters proof.

I wish I could say you were misinformed but alas you are spot on. In fact I'd say you didn't elaborate enough. I have a no contact order in my family court case that the police laughed at and said to get a "real" restraining order. So I went back and prosecuted my husband for 3 hours obtaining a RO. When he violated the RO and I called police I was advised to simply write up a complaint and they'd forward it to the DA. Fast-forward 10months: With videotaped violation the judge threw those violations out of court telling me to go back to family court for violation of the no contact order. While my abuser had me arrested without any proof on his word alone that I attempted to drive him and our children off the highway ((65mph)). Abusers words carry more weight than women's. Also of note, previous abusove situation, within an investigation I was told that I could have my rights and custody of my child taken away for not protecting a child from a situation that I was suspicious of sexual assault. No proof of assault; yet I was the one who called and reported the suspicion and was residing within a domestic abuse shelter. Fast forward to current divorce and GAL won't protect children who state father is physically abusive. GAL says she needs proof. So the message is as a parent I can lose my children if I report suspected abuse by GAL won't protect with children reporting abuse and providing documented history of abuse of the perpetrator..

Women in general (bur especially foreign and minority women) in the UK receive this kind of mindboggling atrocious treatment as well and it is evident that the courts and other institutions have no real understanding of domestic abuse. They are not only horrible arbitrators of domestic abuse but also in deciding what is in a child's best interest.

And what about the link between family court and juvenile dependency court? Somebody is getting paid at family court! There have been too many parents being referred to child protective services and detaining petitions filed. It's common in California.

Family court circus. DV laws have only been in effect in this city since 1974... time for a major evolution. My son was hospitalized 19 days at age 4 & bc my ex works for the feds he got away with it. Despicable treatment of victims 😣

BeckySue Nielson. Firstly, THIS is one of the most beautiful woman I know, inside and out. Her courage & determination to support victims is unprecedented. 2ndly If her bangs do need a trim, I guarantee you she made a choice to sacrifice that salon appt to help another woman or another woman's child. Thirdly, I looked at your picture, your bangs appear stylishly too short.
