The admin of explaining that you fired off a 10000 credit or something turbolaser round you didn't actually have budgetary approval to expend and the absolute dressing down you'd get for it probably made the guy here think it just wasn't worth it. From what I understand, military performance reviews actually do inspect how many effective shots each gunnery station make, so shooting an escape pod that didn’t have any lifeforms would’ve made the CO look bad, and possibly be overlooked for promotion. If I remember correctly, anyway. Honestly, Vader or the Star Destroyer captain should’ve ordered all jettisoned escape pods be destroyed, regardless if there were life signs or not. it's actually less expensive to fire the death star than to use turbolaser batteries (which actually use plasma and tibana gas). Tibana gas is expensive in the Star Wars universe hence why there are different colored blaster bolts (which indicate the quality of said bolt). Red bolts are the cheapest, Green are more premium, Blue are ionized for increased effect against droids, and no one knows what yellow ones are yet except for mandos and bounty hunters.

The pods can probably only be launched from the inside. After all, you wouldn't want a prankster or traitor to walk past the line of pods going "launch, launch, launch". If it's as easy as it is in our universe to take the stairs and call the elevator to every single floor you pass, you can be sure someone will do it. An Imperator class star destroyer is a purpose-built warship that, by necessity, is able to direct nearly all of its power output towards its weapons in sustained combat. The hypermatter annihilation reactor at the core of an ISD generates power through the creation of an artificial star. Not some little one. We're talking about the power output of a main sequence star like our sun, but much faster and more efficient. Even the smaller weapons batteries have yields in the dozens of terraton range, and yet that is nothing compared to the ship's maximum power generation capabilities. If you stop to think about the physics for more than a few minutes, the power generation required and successfully generated for even simple hand blasters in Star Wars is obscene.

Yeah, their orders probably were simply to capture or kill any life forms, they wouldn't need to know why. Military, after all, is all about blindly following orders to the letter, not thinking by yourself.

  • @Murgoh

Yes, that probably depends on the military in question, the branch and if you are conscripted or career/volunteer. When I was in the Finnish military (conscription) in the early 90:s I got both, most of the professional staff tended to encourage individual thinking and initiative at least to some extent while the higher ranking/senior conscripts were more of the "do exactly as I tell you, nothing more, nothing less"-kind. They would especially hate it if you did something better than them and make sure you paid for it. In the military of a totalitarian regime like the Galactic Empire I would believe they'd mostly favor the "obey blindly or else..."- approach. After all, never, ever questioning or second-guessing the authorities is the basic of survival in an authoritarian/totalitarian society. Also, as others have noted all information would be given strictly on "need to know"-basis as knowledge is power and those with power don't like to share so better keep the "cannon fodder" as ignorant as possible, telling them only the absolute minimum, in this case probably just something like "capture all life forms, if capturing is impossible kill them, secure any computer equipment (including droids) for investigation".

In space thermal heat will accumulate in the ship until it can properly be vented. If the firing system is based on a hastily designed booster to produce stronger weapons, restraint would be important in managing long term voyages as the most expensive part of firing a laser is the coolant. Dryfiring the lasers (without coolant reserves) would be devastating for the integrity of the ship and weapons.

They needed to retrieve the Death Star plans, not blow them up. Until they actually had the plans back in their hands they wouldn't know if the plans were still out there being put to use. The only weird part is that they were firing at anything.

Honestly, the whole 'the gunner didn't fire because he didn't want to tarnish his reputation' is the single most realistic thing in all of Star Wars, perhaps even one of the most realistic things in fiction. That's *exactly* the kind of thing the military would care about, especially when considering promotions. For anyone who doesn't have first hand experience, here's a real-world example: Pear Harbor had advance warning that the Japanese were approaching, but the base command chose not to sound the alarm because nobody wanted to be 'that guy' who wasted everyone's time and resources being on alert if it turned out to be nothing.
