LiPO battery offers a great boost to Cold Cranking Amps which is a significant help to the hot start issue. So reliable starts hot or cold with the limitation of cold, below which it doesn't work. However you probably don't want to ride in those conditions. So it may not be for commuting where you have to leave the bike outside. Important to get the correct charger that is different from lead-acid. Happy to recommend Oxford Products.

👍🏻The first thing I did with my 2014 RSV4 Factory was to buy one of the SHIDO batteries just for the weight saving, also had to purchase a specific charger. SHIDO is absolutely amazing. I've now removed it and now sitting in my 2017 RF Superpole. For me it was only ever about the weight saving factor.

Yeah but what's 8lbs.. you weight fluctuates by 5 ish pounds.. small un-noticable weight saving that comes with a huge expense over a standard battery.. I installed Shorai battery w/ higher CCA and Ricks Hi torque starter in my Ducati 999 after FBF installed a 102mm overbore w/ 13.5:1 Pistal HC pistons, new big end bearings, race spec crank balance, etc, etc.. .. The Shorai kept shutting itself down due to some sort of safety overcharge threshold issue IIRC.. I also had their charger.. Pretty expensive investment for saving a few pounds.. Went thru 2 Shorai lithiums which suffered from this built in safety feature . went back to a YUASA.. ZERO ISSUES and now I eat less.

I had a Skyrich on my RSV 1060 big bore. Was fine for three years. Don't let the voltage drop though, so alarms or anything that causes a drain is a bad idea.

Mr Griff are you guys looking to run a few of these on the shop bikes for a real world test , I would be interested to know how it pans out... Also does it affect the battery if you have multiple stop starts throughout the day as in Bloodbike riders... As always great content

Great video. What about the specific charging current that is more sensitive for Lithium compared to Lead batteries? I was hoping my issue with the Lithium battery would come up :) I tried a lithium battery with my 2006 RSV1000, and it did not work. As it did not charge properly, it seemed to be caused by the charging volt sensitivity. I put a lead battery back in and worked perfectly. Any thoughts on this? I do prefer to use a Lithium battery for cranking power, size, and it has no fluids that will freeze up. Cheers!

The Tuono MY>=21 all came shipped with Lithium batteries. The manual says you can substitute it for a Lead acid, but no idea why you would do this! Just make sure it is correctly maintained on the right charger. Aprilia recommend pulling the 32A fuse if the bike is left for >2weeks without being ridden. No need to do that f you have a Li compatible maintainer obvs.

Shido is a great battery, but not the best for a Gen 2 RSV. AGM is better suited to absorb the huge charge given by the 500w generators and poor regulator’s. The Shido charges in minutes and the regulator has to shunt to earth, which can kill the stator. If affordable the Shindegeon 847 is the best regulator for a Gen 2 with any AGM battery. ,

The only thing to remember, is that lithium batteries need more than 14.1 volt to charge. Optimum charge comes whit 14,5 volts. Older bikes struggle whit it, but a new rectifier usually helps. My first gen RSV charged only 13.6 volts and lithium battery did not work at all, new rectifier from ebay "30€" and charges 14.4 volts.

I have a lithium in my gen1 and I left it for 6 months(disconnected) in my bike whist I was overseas , once connected ,without having to charge it, the bike fired up, no problem. I'm looking at replacing all my lead acid batteries with lithium ones.

Sorry but I need to challenge the statement that my garage won't burn down if my lithium battery is overcharged. That is exactly what will happen. Lithium's are very sensitive to overcharging and being charged by the wrong charger. The charger needs to balance charge each cell in the battery to the correct end voltage of the particular lithium chemistry of the battery. In my case with lithium polymer cells in RC aircraft its 4.2V per cell, no more, ever. In Perth (Australia) there were over 50 house fires in 2022 due to the incorrect charging of e-scooters. These use the same 18650 cells as the batteries you are reviewing. These batteries are great, but they are also very temperamental and unfortunately their default when mistreated is to catch on fire.

So out of interest, uprated starter cables (which you reviewed in the past) or Lithium battery on a big V-Twin? which would be better I wonder? around the same price I guess so what would you choose 🤔

Both Mate, cables as a necessity for Ape twins, big Lithium is a lifestyle choice. Notice BIG,I'd always go with the biggest capacity you can squeeze into the battery tray, lithium or lead acid the 12 is borderline,14/16 and up gives good reserves if you fancy splashing out.. My original choice for my Mille was a JMT HJTX14H but for my Tuono I went up to HJTX20CH just because I got an outstanding deal at the time. I never had anything other than instant start with the 14,just like turning on a light switch, nice to have a massive reserve though. As regards the 30 secs wait in winter, does the trick every time. Would you be happy with acetylene headlights compared with halogen? Same arguments apply to a lead acid battery unless running total loss on track.

@@Budget-Cars-And-Bikes True, but as I needed a new charger anyway I bought a package deal including a fully featured Noco charger that charges all types with my first JMT HJTX14. When I got my 2008 T it needed a new battery so I decided to get the biggest I could fit just because. Happily these were on a special offer at the time so not that expensive. Even better they duplicated my order several days later and seemed reluctant to call me back when I phoned them and left a message. So now I have a spare HJTX20 CH to use in the future. Happy days

people worry about the weight of a battery , weigh your leathers and boots , battery means nothing , lol , my experience of lithium batteries on power tools is they don't like charging on cold weather , I get 5 yrs out of a decent lead acid with optimate no problems, I'll stick with it

  • @ec9156

Lithium never again. Cost to weight savings not worth it. Lead last 4-5 years, Lithiums maybe 3 years, very finicky having to maintain lithium charger to it. If lithium runs dead, dead, don't try and charge it, it will explode within a couple hours. Smoke is really an explosive gas. Eric C. from USA and can ride every month. 2008 Aprilia Tuono Factory 1000R running strong!

I'm raising my hand here raising my hand with a question-LOL : Regarding CCA.. the manufacturer recommends a certain CCA.. lets say 225... but in stead you opt for the extra starting power and buy a 300 CCA.. after initial start up, doesn't the regulator rectifier have to deal w/ the excess amps of a larger CCA battery ?? Make sense..
