Are Lighter Discs Better? | Testing the Effects of Different Disc Weights
Disc weight is a topic that is often discussed in the disc golf world as an important factor when choosing the right disc for you to help ensure you get maximum distance and accuracy. But truthfully, we were curious to know…. how important is it REALLY?
Are there substantial differences in flight if you increase or decrease the weight by a few grams, or even as much as 10 to 20? And how do you go about finding the right weighted disc for YOUR game?
Well, we here at JustDisc were very curious about the importance of this factor, so we decided to test the effects of 1 mold in different weights. And honestly, the results were surprising and not exactly what we expected!

The lighter disc's help me a lot, mainly because I have limited arm speed, finding the best weight for your arm speed is essential for control and distance potential, if your max distance is 250 embrace it & dial it in, accuracy always wins.
As an older disc golfer (51 - who started at 49) most content seems to be aimed at younger, more athletic people. I appreciate content that can help average, older folks like myself. This video is a great one for someone like me. Thank you.

Totally agree, I love the content that helps the average (and older) golfers. At 65 and new to this game, I have much less flexibility and do lower my expectations. I’ve got to try and beat my grandson on the short game!
Videos like what Ezra did where he showed flight patterns for distant drivers and fairway drivers. I appreciated the flight tracker and how we as the viewer can see how each manufacturer is similar or different when compared to the rest.
Thanks for the video! As a 48 year old, 25 year regular disc golfer, this is affirming and helpful! I spent 2023 lowering my average disc weight from 173g down to 168g. It's made a considerable difference in control, distance, and consistency. I also don't feel like I'm working as hard to move this weight class. Always an ongoing experiement.. Happy Throwing all!!
Been disc golfing a few months. I'm 65, but better late than never. Getting a lot of great online content to bring my game up. Starting to get better distance and accuracy. I probably need more experience with disc selection, based on the specific the requirements of the shots. After watching the video today, I should probably buy an understable disc. Thank for the video!

Not a problem Rick, glad you got something out of it! Honestly, pick up a Latitude 64 River or Innova Leopard3 in a weight between 160 to 165g. They are both great stable distance drivers that will help you learn the game a bit easier over time. And if you want something faster with your current skill level and experience, go with the Innova Mamba or Innova Mystere 👍 Just make sure they aren’t too heavy
I would love to see this same video with an overstable and one for understable. The more disc 'science' I see the better understanding I have for my own throwing. Keep it up!
In school rn but I’ll come back to this vid and watch in a bit!
Learning about weights has really helped me get more distance. I went out and found the Latitude 64 Dimond in opto plastic for that reason and I can throw it as far as the "heavy hitters" in our little group
My favorite video of yours is pick up a wraith and put down a destroyer! I used to throw destroyers because I saw all the pros using them. Then I tried a star wraith and fell in love with it. Now I bag 3 wraiths in different stabilities and I’m never going back!
IDK, I very rarely set out to look for a specific disc golf subject video, unless it's a specific disc review or something like that. Keep doing what you're doing, it brings me back quite often.

I think the esthetics of this vid were the best so far. The studio with the Rivers all displayes and lighted? Magic. As for content, I think you are killing it. The River is a prime choice, as it has appeal for all skill levels. If I win, I'd love a clear/white, and a pink. Thanks as always for providing us content!

i'd like to see you guys travelling around playing brand new courses, smaller non-local ones that people probably haven't ever seen before
I liked specifically how you delved into a concept thoroughly over days and variations on a single disk vs giving a quick one day comparison on min and max weight.
How we play disc golf series is great along with the must-have disc series
thanks JD crew! the results of this research are interesting. When starting disc golf, the flight number explanation video helped me a lot. More recently, I can vouch for the Wraith vs. Destroyer video - I have been loving the Wraith.
Been wanting so patiently, super helpful
I really liked this video the most. It was helpful I had been asking this question. Good to get an answer
I would love to see some more content like these videos. I have a difficult time understanding what to look for when going to a store and having this sort of video is helpful to feel like I can make informed decisions!
Great stuff! Really enjoyed the vid!
Love to see videos that will help improve my game, from tips to equipment choices as well as different brand recommendations. Thanks!
I love that you have so many videos which each break down a different aspect of disc variety or a specific part of form/technique. I would really like to continue seeing this kind of focus on a minute part of the game without shying away from the nitty gritty. Thanks for the great work!

Videos like this and videos of disc comparisons are helpful to me. I don't have the budget to buy a ton of discs to find the ones I like the most.

Great content, well explained. Very true about everything you said. Thanks for the knowledge . Keep up the great work!! Let's go!!
Love pretty much all your videos. But def more of this! Different weights and different plastic😀🥏
Reviews on specific discs are most useful to me. Not every manufacturer uses numbers quite the same, and knowing what to expect (especially out of the different plastics) is helpful when planning a purchase.
I’d love to see more of these types of videos. Disc golf is still so relatively new to the world that there’s still so much more to discover about the sport!
Excellent! Very informative! Thank-you.
As a new player, happy with all the content and just trying to absorb all the learning.
I love the videos like this where you dive into details. I also really liked the top 50 shots where we see the people that are the best at doing it!😀
Very interesting video and it made me think about some of my choices. I'd love to see more videos like this that take a different look at disc golf rather than just reviews and form discussion. Thanks for all the content!
This was such an inciteful video! Great job with this.
I enjoy these in depth videos that really explore a concept. Was quite informative! Thanks
Keep doing what you have been putting out. I enjoy it all.

Very helpful video, thanks! Would love to see more videos comparing similar discs across major brands
I would like some more videos on understanding the difference between the numbers and how to set up a bag as a beginner
I really enjoy videos like this that are experimental and informative to test things that some of us do not have the resources I do on our own.
I really liked this video... more like this is great. Understanding discs & what they do is a huge mystery to most newer disc golfers. Plastics, molds, etc.
I like the videos like this one that isolate individual factors and delve into their effects on flights, etc.
Really love this type of content.
Great video! Thanks for this one.
I bag three rivers, a 171 opto for turn overs, 175 gold line for reliable hyzers and a 174 river pro for longer straighter shots. Great video

While you have so many great videos on your channel, I love the “How we play disc golf” videos because a) they feature my favourite course, b) you show throws from multiple players with different styles and abilities, c) you display info on the disc being thrown, d) you cover different lines. These videos would appeal to any viewer, whether beginner (like me) or more advanced.

I really enjoy the videos where you make it very simple for a beginner to understand more complex topics in disc golf.
This is so interesting to me! I am constantly debating on whether to pick lighter discs or heavier discs, so it’s cool to see it broken down like this! Also big fan of your getting more distance from a standstill video! It was so helpful!
Thanks for this. I always wanted to figure it out but never had the means.

I personally like the discs that everyone should have videos. I find it's a great way to figure out what discs to add to your starter set. To help improve your game
when i was in my 20's i threw max weight discs because we all believed they went farther . in my 30's i switched over to 150 class for drivers and mids and kept my putters around 171-173G in my 40's i started throwing faster more overstable discs ranging 155-162 G for drivers and mids and now 20 years later it still works for me as a Forehand dominant player of 42 seasons.

Wow, so much great information. I’ve been eyeing the river for quite some time, and thought if I went lighter, based on the assumption that lighter is farther, it actually is too understable in my drives and my high speed turns seemed more like -2 or -3. I now understand why having heavier discs would be beneficial for me. I like your disk selections, and educationalist videos, and the videos on the types of discs one should have in their bag.
I love the river almost as much as I love watching your guys videos on how to throw different shots, techniques, THIS... Seeing differences in weight. Great stuff.

As a returning (and much older) player, I really appreciate content on the ‘mental’ side of disc golf - applying the principles of specific characteristics (expected flight shape, effect of wind, altitude, humidity and temperature, etc.) to specific situations on the course. Some of that can be picked up by watching pros in various conditions and eventually you can discern the patterns, but a scientific or empirical review is extremely useful in figuring out how to apply those concepts to my game. Thanks for the content - subscribed!

I just started playing disc golf earlier this year and this is the first channel I subscribed to. I would like to hear your thoughts on playing in tournaments - how you approach the tourney, strategy for different types of holes, a "typical" day at a tourney, etc. The videos I would like to see in the future are how to practice, how to progress from beginner to amateur tourney player and beyond and any instructional videos that help you get from point A to point B. Like Canada, I live in Chicago and getting time to play at a course is limited now as it is getting into winter and along with bad weather, it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home. So what can we do in the winter to stay sharp or get better? Thanks!

This confirmed my theory a year ago. 1. No real added distance. 2. Easier to throw causes more spin which causes right turn so get overstable to straighten out. 3. Only use with 10+ speed discs.
I enjoy the videos on Distance and Form. Hearing different perspectives from different people and seeing what "Clicks" for me is what's been the most helpful thing to my game.
