Are Labour and the Conservatives ready for the election? | LBC panel

As Rishi Sunak has started the countdown for the General Election on July 4, here are some of the key policy battlegrounds the Tories and Labour are expected to go head-to-head on.
After months of speculation, Rishi Sunak has called a General Election that many expect Labour to win.
But much can change during a campaign that will be dominated by contentious issues and heated debate across the UK.
So are they ready? Andrew Marr is joined by an expert political panel to analyse this.

It's complicated, the realignment of politics as we went through brex1t was masked by a single issue. currently People Under 50 are identifying more with left of centre views especially in urban suburban areas. Older working class especially male are becoming extremely socially Conservative It's soft in that there will be a new coalition formed, the one Boris gained power with is completely busted and the one that Corbyn failed with is now reforged moving towards the centre.

Because the Tories have been so bad. No one likes Labour, they just hate the Tories. Kind of like many people who voted for Biden did so because they hate Trump. This will help Starmer in this election, but will hurt them next election if he's still the PM. Turnout will be low after a disappointing term, and low turnouts help the Tories.

As for the Tories, the chances of them winning Government (Majority or Minority) is probably 1%. And I think Keir Starmer's message of "Change" after 14 years of Tory rule will resonate with the British Public.

I have been a lifelong Tory voter (now 60) but I don’t think so this time- did they not realise that the constant in-fighting and backstabbing would make everyone think they cannot possible govern properly until they sort themselves out? The inevitable spell they will now have in opposition MAY just give them time to do that, let’s see. But I seriously doubt Starmer will leave us any better off!

Rishi Sunak has had plenty of time to call the GE rather soon. Why did he decide so late to do that? We didn't even take the time for suitable weather conditions. Why the hurry all of a sudden? Did he expect to be ousted before? There is something odd about his hurry.

I suspect they will hold electoral reform as a carrot for re-election along with closer ties to Europe. The idea behind the first term is to get into power, establish themselves as trustworthy by not over-promising and then with the public trusting them more add these sort of policies to seal the deal for a second term.

the comments around both parties having similar missions is irksome as the "change agent" aspect is all about "how" they tackle the issues and in most cases there is a marked difference in approach...also somewhat damning to suggest that voters are easily influenced by better weather or sporting events, if that's the case we are all doomed

The country flip flops between Tory and Labour after every 3-4 general elections and has done with clockwork precision since the 1950s (aside from one blip in 1970). The conservatives have been in for the last 4 general elections - so i'd say a Labour win was pretty much inevitable this time round no matter what the track record of either party has been.
