Regarding professional monitors, I think you should review at least one just to have a baseline to compare with mainstream monitors. It would be interesting to see the differences in color accuracy etc for how much more expensive they are.

hat's the vast majority of what you are paying for, for the calibration. Gamers don't care about color accuracy. It literally does not matter if the blue on our gun is a slighty different shade of blue that is barely even perceptible. Oh and gamma, which again, you'll barely notice, probably only in a side by side and it's just going to look "slightly different". A real pro color grading monitor isn't meant for games, it's meant for color accurate work. For when you need what you see on screen to match a printout. It's not expensive because it's better overall, it's just better at one thing. If he cared that much he could get some cal software and get a monitor close... You know pro color monitors costs many thousands of dollars right? Like far beyond consumer grade pricing. Mostly because corporations need them and will pay money as a result. That along with the time involved to calibrate drives the price up. I use them at work, there is NOTHING magic about them. What you pay for, is not what you need or want when gaming. If accuracy is your thing, HDTV test has a great channel dedicated to basically nothing but. He has a sony hx310 which is like 20g for a 31 inch screen or something crazy.. Again, not what anyone "wants" for a gaming display.

It's tricky as a developer because you want good colour accuracy, put not the perfection that an illustrator would want, but also you might be working with animations or some gaming elements. It would be good to have an idea of what monitors represent a good compromise of features that are good for professionals with occasional gaming use. An obvious example would be having a refresh rate of 90-120 Hz, not the 240Hz+ for serious gaming monitors, but also not the 60Hz common in pro monitors.

I think the question for "ultrawide vs. dual monitors" was mis-interpreted. The common use for dual monitors while gaming is for the game to be displayed full screen on one monitor while chat, web, discord, etc are dedicated to a secondary monitor. Not the "both monitors displaying the game with a seam where the bezels are".

Ultrawide can also be a drawback in some competitive shooters because it can often distract you. You might see an ally move in your peripheral vision, and if you glance over to see what it is, you might take your eyes off the center of the screen where the enemy is likely to appear.

Gaming sucks ass on ultrawide, unless you want to play a game with a static background and you know the developers enabled ultrawide for it. Any horizontal movement like aiming in FPS makes me and my friend dizzy, that's why we got 27" 240hz OLED now. Its way better and only 30% more expensive.

Quick note for OLED users - I know this channel covered Mactype for correcting the text issues related to the subpixel layout on OLEDs. At the time of that video it was an impertect solution. I just got the 45in LG OLED, and I do a fair bit of work on the same monitor I game on (with everything in dark mode, a black bg and disappearing taskbar to prevent burn in lol). Mactype has corrected the issue everywhere I was noticing it. I'm not gonna call it a *perfect* solution (text looks a bit bolder than it should in some places) but it really helped! Also, this monitor is solid, it'd be great to see Monitors Unboxed review it.

Two people can send the exact same product back to the same RMA center and one may be handled well and the other botched. Outside of policy on paper, which can be reviewed on your own there isn't a ton to investigate for each specific company. Just getting different customer service reps or techs looking at your broken item will change the process.

Of course, the problem is that different people have different perceptions of what is good customer service and what isn't. Also, it's nice to know how many RMAs are being handled by a particular brand. How many LGs, Samsungs, ASUS, MSI etc panels are being sent back for problems? Don't know if that info is readily available.

The OLED more for competitive games or the 4 k more for productive work and story games, or games that give a nice experience on a big screen (and if you have the GPU for that^^)

My question: Those oled monitors seem to be great, but I don't want to have to worry about the burn in risk. I am considering whether mini-led monitors would be a good compromise. My main concern is, are these monitors good in low brightness conditions? We always talk about the lowest brightness capability of monitors, but when I am using my monitor at night I want to have its overall brightness reduced quite a lot to not cause eye strain. Can mini-leds retain good contrast in such conditions?

The InnoCN 32M2V goes for $800 but sells out quickly as Amazon gets stocked. It reportedly uses the same panel as the PG32UQX with 1152 FALD zones, 144hz with VRR. InnoCN also regularly stocks a 27" version. Bought one and so far the experience has been interesting... first had to use the NVIDIA tool to update the displayport firmware on my GPU just to get the display to work in the UEFI screen, prior to that it would only detect after Windows began to load. And apparently Pascal cards don't support DSC either, capped at 120hz with DP 1.4. Required a crash course in HDR and VRR setting configuration. But the result blows the U3011 out of the water. Can't even see text fringing anymore. Was so used to an always-on CCFL backlight that I can't even discern FALD-related blooming yet, it's a total non-issue right now and I am extremely happy with the HDR performance.

Like do you have to navigate a long-ass menu just to change source or is there a specific shortcut button for that. Also I'd like to see if there is a possibility to mix audio from 2 inputs (USB-C and DisplayPort) to one output in the monitor's audio jack in future monitors. As an avid Sim Racer, the prospect of replacing my aging Triple 24" 16::10 setup for a single 32:9 Ultra Wide sounds appealing - unfortunately, the ones that have come out on the market still leave a bit to be desired, especially considering the price point. It honestly hasn't shifted my urge to just go with a newer set of 16::9 24" monitors with much better specs. It's a shame that 16::10 isn't a thing anymore; I really like that little bit of additional vertical height and honestly don't mind the letterbox formatting when setting video full-screen.

Am I the only one still confused by what HDR is? There seems to be HDR10/HDR10+ and the competing Dolby Vision, which include metadata and therefore the source media, and monitor used to display it, need to both support the same standard. Then there is VESA DisplayHDR that is a specification for minimum contrast, brightness levels etc but also requires at least HDR10 support to meet the standard. While the monitor specs for contrast, brightness etc are going to apply whatever you're doing, anything that doesn't use HDR encoding, e.g. your regular desktop apps, still need to be displayed decently by your monitor. So how does this work? I think this is where a lot of the problems are if you're not just gaming and watching movies. Which, if any, HDR standards should you be looking at in a general purpose / professional monitor?

With a super wide monitor you can use picture by picture via 2 cables and voila you have 2 separate monitors just without seams and borders. And MS PowerToys with FancyZones solves the window management issues ... to a point you wonder how you ever did without it. I'd wish for 32:10 monitors though. 32:9 is cool but a little bit of added height would be nice ... or we just jump ship and go for the new Samsung 58" 32:9 that's basically 2 32" 4k displays in one ... cazy.

With how I use my monitor, I feel like OLED is out for me. Don't want to worry about burn in or the pixel layout, where mini-LED isn't all that much of a compromise without either of those issues. Maybe this was the case for mobile phones in 2015, but not much now with WOLED. The only issue is that its still a bit pricey $1100 for a gaming monitor is a good amount of money. Regarding monitor stands at 31:13 - for me it actually matters: I prefer flat stands, like the BenQ or GIGABYTE as shown. This allows to put things on top of them or lift up a laptop, giving it more space to get air from below. The tripod / floating design is the worst by far. I had ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q with design like this: Not only nothing meaningful did fit between or under the legs besides cables, but also it effectively took half of my desk as I couldn't put it further back due to the back leg. If it were flat, like PG27AQN has, the back leg could be partially midair and remain stable - not possible with contact-point legs. Now even though I have multiple 27" monitors,. I do have more desk space due to the stand not being like in the PG258Q.

That one actually got almost severe image retention after 2 years use, even if it wasn't a permanent image retention like burn-ins with OLEDs. Last straw for me was the monitor getting excessively warm and started smelling burnt plastic. And I've had it for a little over 4 years.

4:13 As far as comparative data, you could start by comparing a professional monitor to existing gaming monitor data. Then phase out the gaming monitors. Consumers could use this limited sample to judge the strengths and weaknesses of professional monitors, as a category. Most ultrawide monitors support this feature. It's called picture-by-picture and has to be enabled in the menu and requires two inputs to be connected from the output computer. It's fiddly to get the proper resolution set in Windows, but once it is configured, each half will function as a separate display but still have no seam on the desktop. It will be a custom resolution, however, and not 16 by 9 unless you are in picture-in-picture mode.
