@@DanaHowl, Pbr7 the code for iron oxide with manganese. It doesn't contain lead. Lead-based paints are forbidden in the US, unless you manage to import them.

@@mandrews817 i thought the same thing. PBr7 being the code for the pigment vs tbge chemical symbol for Lead being Pb. HOWEVER If you look on the label warning section shown by Dana it actually says it contains lead! Dont ask me why.

@@mrchoochoohead9033, I'm shocked. It actually states so on the label! Pure Raw Umber doesn't contain lead. This could be either a contaminant, an additive specific to this type of paint, or a label error. I've mailed Golden asking for clarification. Let's see if they reply.

@@mandrews817 yeah i have no idea why either. Im just going to stick to citadel paints for my airbrush. I had a frieght when i discovered that some of my vallejo paints contained cadmium. Thankfully id never ussd them but the sheer panic that caused was not good

To clarify my point and answer some of the questions in the comments: I DO NOT KNOW what the toxicity/hazardous qualities of the Cadmium/Lead paints are once they are dry! I'm not trying to spread misinformation so much as I could not find any info on whether cadmium or lead based paints are safe to touch after they are dry, as these are mostly for use on a canvas! Please do your own research and I'm happy to update this video once I know the answer! Thanks :)

Any paint (including acrylic hobby paints) that isn't labeled "non-toxic"--And I have yet to see a miniature paint that is child friendly or non toxic--is not something you should be eating. Acrylic is, after all, PLASTIC. The pigments are certainly a danger, but so is the acrylic binder. It isn't safe to absorb through the skin, breathe in large quantities, etc. Art is a "hazardous" pursuit (unless you're using children's fingerpaints, and even then, I wouldn't drink large quantities)--high quality art supplies and pigments demand that we should treat them with respect due to the materials that are used in them, but we should already be respecting any art supply that contains acrylic. Of all paint binders, oil paints is just linseed oil--there's a food grade version you can eat; watercolor is oxgall and gum arabic which also you can ingest (in fact ox gall/ox bile is sometimes used in the treatment of gall stones)--ACRYLIC is the one that cannot and should not be ingested or otherwise introduced into your body in any way, shape, or form. Of all paint types, treat Acrylic with the most respect, whether or not it has a cadmium pigment in it.

As I understand it, cadmium is significantly worse than lead. The real danger is that both are dangerous even in small doses over long periods, as your body does not flush them out. They accumulate over time and can become a severe problem over the course of years to decades.

One more try, since both my last comments apparently disappeared... Maybe because I was trying to include a link to reference? Anyway, I use oil paints for my models, and that includes some cadmiums and leads. Cadmium is definitely not something you want to ingest or inhale, but once dry the paint is safe to handle as it will not absorb through skin contact. You should not pour any rinse water/solvents that were used with cadmiums or lead into the drain, but rather let it evaporate or soak up with a towel and dispose of in the trash once it is dry (to prevent it from getting in water supplies/groundwater). If you need to sand dry paint that used either of those, make sure to wear a respirator and use a wet sanding technique, and wipe down your workstation afterwords. I'd probably avoid licking your models, just to be safe, too, and most definitely do not lick your brushes. ;)

Fact A: Bismuth Vanadate Yellow is Dana Howl's new favorite yellow. Fact B: Pale Sand is yellow. Conclusion: The king is dead.

Golden Acrylics in general have been some of my favorite paint. I've not seen this yet but now I'll know it's worth the price when I do. 👍

Dane, hope you see this. i asked Golden and here's the reply: Thank you for contacting us with your questions. While we do have several cadmium colors in some of our paint lines, including the SoFlat acrylics, we do not use lead in any acrylic products. The Cadmiums that we do use are low-soluble pigments, so they are relatively difficult to absorb through your skin, but we do not suggest sanding or spraying any cadmium paints, as airborne entry is very dangerous with heavy metal pigments. The dry paint films should not be an issue, but it is a good question for our Health & Safety department to address. I’ll forward this email to them so they may respond with the most recent information and advice. That said, there are very good cadmium color alternatives in SoFlat, including Bismuth Vanadate Yellow, Permanent Yellow Deep, Naphthol Red Light, and Pyrrole Red. So, it may be the easiest route for painting the minis and other pieces that tend to be handled using these colors and avoid cadmiums altogether.

I got a follow up: To follow-up on this conversation, I would like to add that we do not recommend cadmium colors for use in gaming minis or other small objects which may be played with. Skin absorption is not a concern, but rather the foreseeable circumstance of “mouthing”, which is the act of sucking, chewing, or holding the object in the mouth. As Mike indicated, more suitable choices may be made. (this was from another rep). But yeah, I do see the point here. Skin isn'tthe problem, ingesting it is. :) I don't particularly lick or chew on my models, but I do remember a few times when I've brought a chess piece to or near my lips. Now that I was really thinking about it.

@@Chaplin001 Just to note, the lead warning is a California Prop 65 warning. Lead is not listed in the ingredients, and Lead is not noted on the MSDS (which would be mandatory if lead was used as an ingredient). Because the Prop 65 labeling rules are so strict (sometimes overly so - a prop 65 warning is required for any product that is made from, contains, or is processed in a facility that also processes *wood*), it is more likely that they are covering their bases because the earth tone pigments (like umbers, ochres, and siennas) are made from metal oxides. The mine source of these pigments can contain trace amounts of other elements like lead, manganese etc. It is also possible that these particular paints are processed in the same facility that also processes lead for some purpose, creating a possibility for accidental cross-contamination, which would also necessitate a Prop 65 warning. These are not ingredients in the paint, but may exist as possible faint trace contaminants. The Prop 65 Lead warning in this case is more like when your can of tuna has a warning label "may contain traces of nuts" just because the company that packed the tuna also makes peanut butter on the other side of the building. Fines for providing an inaccurate MSDS can be insanely high, especially for a multinational company like Golden, and an inaccurate MSDS could cost them major fines and lawsuits in multiple countries. Since Lead is not on the MSDS, it is fairly safe to assume that no lead has been deliberately added, and the lead warning is more of a blanket-cover statement as required by California law even when lead is not expected to actually be present, but there is a slight chance it might be. Conversely, current MSDS requirements DO NOT require listing certain cobalt compounds, even though they have demonstrable toxicity. For that reason, I would recommend also avoiding the Golden SoFlat Cobalt Teal if you are trying to avoid the more toxic pigments.

It is now my headcanon that, underneath their mid-sized sedan's worth of yellow armour plating, Imperial Fists wear the brightest pink underwear imaginable

I love these paints, I decanted them into High Flow Acrylic style bottles.

Golden So Flat - Delicious but deadly!

Its amazing how much the finished minis remind me of when people use artist grade colored pencil on black paper. I had a friend that loved drawing like that and these remind me of somewhere between that and the UV graffiti in a laser tag arena

Thank you Dana, I've been wanting to get these paints for some time but they are not available over here yet. My plan when / if, getting them was to transfer the paint into dropper bottles. So that I can have some at home as well as at the studio. That could as well be a thing to do between friends, thus taking the edge off the price of entry. A split between 3 friends?

I'm just here in awe at the hot pink undercoat for the orange/yellow transition and how it turns out. Your eye for colour is insane.

been using these in combination with Golden Open Medium to up my wet blending game for a little while. The ultra-matte looks amazing on fur.

The Cadmium paints definitely still do. Some minis paints do as well. I believe the lead is more a byproduct and less the true pigment in burnt umber. That one is produced from cooking soil which would concentrate the heavy metals in the pigment.

Golden is an artist color producer. It is totally normal that colors have a price based on the ingredient. And toxic ingredient is normal in that kind of colors. To protect you, you should varnish your miniature. However, for airbrush use Golden has two separate lines of color you can use (Fluid Acrylics and High Flow Acrylics).

I've been using Golden's fluid acrylics for years and started using the SoFlat paints when they came out. I broadly agree with your comments. Drawbacks: The SoFlats come in a pot and their viscosity is relatively high. Transferring to dropper bottles is a bit annoying, but definitely worth the trouble, IMO. The SoFlats can be a bit too flat and the fluid acrylics are very high gloss, both of which can require some effort to manage. And you'll have to mix colors to your spec rather than counting on the skills of a company to mix the perfect skin tone (or whatever). FWIW, Burnt Sienna plus varying amounts of white makes a very nice range of skin tones. And if you need to go darker than straight Burnt Sienna, add a bit of Burnt Umber or Raw Umber. BTW, cadmium pigments are brilliant for model painting. Their color-fastness, tinting strength, and opacity are unmatched for yellows, reds, and oranges. As noted, you want to manage your risks appropriately (manufacturers are required by law to provide safety data sheets for paint; they're easy to find, including on the Blick website.) But from what I've seen, they're much less of a toxicity hazard than (say) Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. "Don't eat paint" is always a good suggestion, since in the case of hobby paints, you don't even know what's in the paint (unlike with artists' paints). I would try a bottle or two to find out if you like the paint, but unlike Dana, I would strongly recommend both of the boxed sets if you do like the paint. The price difference is significant enough that if you don't like one of the bottles, you've still saved money. That said, if you're worried about the toxicity issues of carbon black, cadmium, crushed quartz, or whatever, you might find the savings evaporating. I'm quite happy to have purchased both boxed sets.

Golden also makes an airbrush medium and it comes in a huge (16fl oz) bottle at a reasonable price (14 bucks US) and works really good for thinning paints. Might save you a few dollars if you're thinning down paints a lot.

I have been using So Flat on some of my Chaos Daemon recently. Loving the magical effects made on my pink horrors I've been getting.

I am sure you know this, but to clarify for others. 5:10 traditional hobby paints also contain different ingredients, yet are priced the same. Artist paint lines have traditionally been priced differently because of some pigment being more expensive than others. Hobby paints manufacturers have the opposite tradition where they even out all the prices (but are thus incentivized to use lower costing pigments, because that will make them more money).

Hobby paints use a lot of fillers in the binder, and they use relatively low cost pigments which allow them to be priced at the same level. Artist paints contain much more pigment than hobby paints, and thus have varying costs.

Nice video! I've been using these for more than a year now, alongside their Fluid, High Flow and Open line. They're my best paints by far.

Yellow looks perfect for nmm. The fluorescent paints look great as well.

I've really been liking the black. It is hands down the most matte acrylic black I have ever worked with.

Loving that painterly style.

I really like how you found the good and the bad with these paints - so many reviews I see on KZread are either ALL positive or ALL negative. It's refreshing to see a balanced review... by the way, still jealous that you got to paint Rivenstone minis already... but jealous in a good way :p

If you like the SoFlat I'd recommend checking outbothe acrylic gouaches (so flat is just marketing because technically acrylic gouaches aren't gouache just acrylics that handle like gouache). Liquitex, turner, and Holbein are really good and have even more colours and single or dual pigment paints in their respective ranges. And one last thing I'd urge anybody looking for these to support local art supply stores over chains like Michaels. If you're in the GTA above ground art supplies, Curry's, and gwartzmans all carry just about every brand of acrylic gouache as well as some top notch brushes.

I came to minis from the other direction, been an artist for years and then got into minis and have pretty much used my artist heavy body acrylics exclusively, basically because I already had them (although have got a couple of citadels out of curiosity). Just a tip for anyone wanting to try artist acrylics on their minis - if there is small square on the tube/pot this indicates the opacity/transparency of the paint. A solid square is full opaque, a half triange in the square is semi transparent and a square that is just a border (if that makes sense) is a fully transparent. Can be handy when you are considering what you want to use the paint for. It might also be worth considering the finish on the paint (which is usually listed if you look at artist supply websites) as they also have different finishes, matt, satin and semi gloss depending on the brand. I've found Winsor and Newton heavy body are also a good option. :)

Oh, and if you want to use the flattest blackest black you will ever see, try Culture Hustles Black 3.0. But a word of warning, it will absolutely get rid of ANY details so you need to overpaint to bring them back. They also have a Mirroriest mirror paint - don't use it on armour unless you want your figure to look like it'e been chromed! (ask me how I know!).

All Golden paints also have a color swatch painted over black & white stripes so that you can see the finish and opacity right on the outside of the bottle.

@@beezany Correct! Many people don't realize at first that our labels are all hand-painted with the actual color contained in the bottle. All acrylic paints have some color shift when they go from wet to dry so this ensures that you can see the true color on the label, something impossible to achieve with printed labels.

I looooove Golden, they’re The closest (heavy body) acrylic paints I’ve found to oils. I do a lot of layering so the drying times in acrylics is best for me. I’m definitely going to try these.

I use these along with liquitex acrylic gauche exclusively for acrylic paints these days (they play perfectly together and help to fill gaps in each other's line-ups). Gave away all my vallejo and citadel pots

Very informative. The No Licking Brushes thing is probably a deal breaker for me, but I can totally see how these colors work for you & your painting style.

Great info, thanks, I bought a bunch, both sets and a few extra a while back and filled them into dropper bottles. While it was a pain to do so it cut down the cost and I‘m still using the leftovers in the original pots as these are rich af. Not licking the brush hasn’t been a big problem so far 😅 still pretty smart to just skip cadmium and lead paints. Gotta try them over black, I was just painting over default zenithal. Love your videos, would looove to see you collaborating with Lyla someday, if there’s an opportunity/a topic that would fit, as both of you have a no nonsense but great outcome art style imho.

I think buying one of the sets is actually a great economical idea. Either one has 2 of your favorites. The Bismuth Yellow is over $22-25 alone and the Zing set has that and Red Violet for $41 on amazon. So for about $8 more than the 2 individually you get at least 3 more colors to play with even if you decide to ignore the Cadmium one. The standard set gives you 2 of your favorites and for $12 more than individual pricing you get a black, white and a blue to try (ignoring the cadmium). And that's assuming you get 20% off from Michaels on all of them.

Just picked up a set of these, thought they where a good price for the basic colors set of 6 for £30 but they seem to be alot more expensive seperately. Not sure if a couple layers of varnish might help if there are any issues handling them during playing? I'm about to paint my fist ultramarine and was testing some blues last night then tried the golden flat one last and it looks amazing, need to try the yellow out now too 👍

Been using these paints for a bit and absolutely adore them! The black paint has become my absolute go-to! May I ask where you found your info on Raw Umber containing lead? The pigment itself is mostly iron oxide with a bit of manganese oxide (which is still toxic, mainly when sprayed), but between pigment chemical info and Golden's Safety Data Sheet, I can't find anything on there being lead in the Raw Umber paint. Doesn't at all detract from your point on toxicity, but I know the thought of lead in the paint carries some weight. Cadmium is definitely one to be careful of, though, for sure.

The lead isn't listed on their safety data sheets, but there are California Prop 65 warnings on the bottles for several pigments, including the umbers and carbon black. (I'm guessing for carbon black because it's literally soot.) There's a statement on their website that states that the warning has to go on any paint with more than 2.5ppm cadmium or 10ppm lead. In some cases, they've changed pigment sourcing to improve on this. For example, older bottles of zinc oxide had a cadmium warning, but they changed sources to reduce cadmium levels. Based on their handling of the zinc oxide situation, I'm guessing that all common sources of umber oxides in the USA contain enough lead to cross the California warning threshold, in which case I wouldn't worry about it any more than any other brown paint.

Can you please do a comparison between “artist paint” vs hobby paints? I have used mediums with crap paint to thin it or with inks before to some good effect

Whats the best orange to get? I have a bunch of Votan worriers that need to be painted orange and black so want something that will go over a black primer

I have enjoyed using these so flat paints for a while I put them in 50 mil dropper bottles and I have used these almost exclusively ever since.

Totally licked my brush the first time I was using the black from the base so flat set. My tongue tingled a little

Before I even watch the video, I want to answer the question. YES! YES they are. If you also use the @GoldenPaints High Flow with them, you can achieve amazing miniature painting results. I mix a matt medium with the High Flow range to bring down the gloss that some of the colors may have. EDIT: After seeing the Video, You did an amazing job reviewing the product. Thank You. Your miniature turned out amazing.. oh and on the toxic thing, you can use a Matt Clear Coat to seal them so your not having to worry about the touching it for gaming.

go for Lemon Yellow, Cyan and Magenta that way you have the ability to create so many different shades of colours

Micheals has a 6 pack of red blue green yellow black and white for 60$ it is SO nice, and worth it as the most of them are 10 buck a pop and the naphthol red is 20 to buy individually. Though the yellow is the cadmium version so dont eat it.

I have some lead abatement training and I've occasionally worked at dealing with lead paints. I don't work with them regularly, so take this for what it's worth but generally the advice for lead paints is to cover them with other paint, so if you're using a varnish you're probably okay. I'm not sure if it would rub off on her lots of handling though and it might not be something worth chancing. I will say if you have children, under no circumstances should you have lead paint anywhere in your house.
