I would’ve liked to ask why the Church refused to provide security camera information to the State for Lori’s trial? It was established that Alex cell data showed him in the parking lot of the church near Chad’s house the day of at least one of the murders (can’t remember which) but that the church wouldn’t provide footage. It was just a quick mention during testimony in Lori’s trial.

It’s hard to explain, but I almost joined the LDS church because the people that I met in Utah were really wonderful. But I also understand that had I decided to remain in the church, no doubt I would’ve found out more disturbing information as the indoctrination process continued. I did not join because I could not believe in Joseph Smith’s claims of direct communication with God.

Smith and his friends put the book of Mormon together from sources they had access to at the time. Two examples--1 The King Benjamin speech is a knock off of the ones by the famous Methodist preacher Benjamin Abbott, during the Second Great Awakening. 2. The story of Lazarus in the Bible was used as a template for the BOM story of Lamoni. There are so many more examples. The verdict is that Smith and his new were bible are total frauds, to rip off the gullible people who would believe them. The sad thing is that many people still fall for it in this day and age.

Nate, this man do not really have a good overview about the studies about Near Death Experiences (NDA). They are much older than he says, even Plato writes about this. The reason there is so much more information about this topic now is that so many more people have experienced this after the development of medical expertise that brings so many more people back from the edge of life. There are mainly three groups that are talking about NDA’s. One is the religious groups, those he talks about here. Another are people believing they can be explained like he says with neurological explanations. But there is a third group that has been studying and documenting such experiences the last 50 years by scientific methods that argues that the parts of the experiences that are possible to validate are real, that the consciousness is operating outside the body. This group of scientists are the ones who has the most data to support their findings today, as they are purely data-driven and goes where the data leads them. The studies are done all around the world, but one of the most renown are the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia. There is also a scientific journal about these kind of studies, the Journal of Near-Death Studies.

A useful in-depth analysis of some key core issues. It helps to inform people and mitigate hostility toward Mormons.😊 The 《problem》with Protestantism is that anyone can interpret holy texts as they see fit, without any constraints. Some people don't even read these texts for themselves. An example : most people who celebrate Christmas have their own 《Diatessaron》in their heads and have zero conception of the apparent contradictions of the birth story on Luke and Matthew, or even the reality that we have no historical facts to corroborate the birth narrative outside of Luke and Matthew. I take the same view as Dale Martin and Bar Ehrman on this question : Matthew and Luke had a theological point they wanted to make. Without prejudice to Mormons, it's my opinion that Joseph Smith was a charlatan. That said, Chad Daybell is a prophet in his own mind. Stated differently, I believe he's delusional and a grandiose narcissist who grossly depassed societal norms, even those set by the Mormon establishment.

Smith and his friends took information from many sources to create the BOM. Here are just two examples. King Benjamin's speech is a knockoff of the ones by the famous Methodist preacher Benjamin Abbott, during the Second Great Awakening. Also the story of Lazarus in the Bible was used as a template for the BOM story of Lamoni. The con men created a new religion in order to dupe the gullible, ignorant populace and make a bundle of money. It is still working, as L.D.S. Inc. rakes in billions of dollars every year from the trusting members, to add to their over two hundred plus billion that they already have. And they are so cheap that they won't even pay custodians to clean the buildings, making the members do it, adding to their already over loaded church service load. SICK

I wish for that, in a way, too. But sometimes I have to consider that the prophets don’t necessarily draw more attention to an already sensationalized situation or headline. They don’t veer from what God allows. The main role they have, is to preach repentance. We are all responsible to live our lives in the way that reflect our beliefs, accurately. I’ve gotten so exhausted by and miss information about our faith, now that there is social media, and Internet, that I have realized I can only do so much. I can only raise my kids and take care of my family and neighbors. I can’t fight off all the wolves on social media all day. Though I certainly want to.

Thank you Nate Eaton and Dr. Bowman for this post. Very informative and well presented. I am an Episcopalian who has followed the Vallow Daybell case and the Frankie Hildebrand one as well. Just a few thoughts: Mormonism was founded during the Second Great Awakening in 19th C America along with the Shakers and other apocalyptic religions. Even among mainstream Protestant faiths there was an all encompassing stress on redemption and being ready for the End Days. It was also the period when Spiritualism was growing rapidly. Emphasis on the afterlife and communicating with the Spirit World. Queen Victoria and Mary Todd Lincoln used psychics and seances. As an example of how Morman belief has been often misrepresented in the midst of all this if you wanted to twist Episcopalian belief in the Communion of Saints you might confuse it with Spiritualism practices. Dr. Bowman is spot on r.e. Chad and his followers mixing historic Apocalyptic beliefs with modern New Age ones solely for their benefit. Evil! I don’t really have a horse in this race but I do hate attacks on different belief systems in the media. BTW when the new Elementary School was built in our County the playground was up to the PTA and people willing to fund it and erect it. One of the teachers is LDS. The whole ward showed up every weekend until three perfectly equipped and landscaped playgrounds that were age appropriate were constructed. God bless those families!

It “breeds”? You really think these people represent the kind, service-oriented LDS people that simply try to love God and improve their communities?? We are really quite boring!😂 These two people are horrific. Their beliefs look nothing like my faith or knowledge, as a Latter Day Saint. We talk about, is Jesus Christ. And my children are kind, loving, nonjudgmental humans. These two were dangerous. Latter Day Saint christians are statistically NOT dangerous. C’mon

Thanks Nate. Great un-biased interview with a scholar who did a decent job explaining how Chad and Lori were mixing Christian and New Age beliefs to come up with their new disturbing and distorted teachings. Based on some negative comments from a few people, I guess the interview wasn't negative enough about the LDS Church to satisfy their preconceived notions. My observation is that it's gullible people like that who end up following people like Chad and Lori Daybell !!!

Chad and Lori went from seemingly mainstream members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to following and practising beliefs outside the official teachings and doctrine. Sometimes, there are formal offshoots of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - people like Chad and Lori who formally create a new group. Chad and Lori chose to develop their own ideas that were out of sync with the mainstream church.

Chad and Lori's extreme narcissism and hubris is astounding. In assuming Church of the Firstborn status and esoteric superiority they manipulate others and assume power unto themselves. They assumed power and authority over others. Their doctrine is wholly-opposed to the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ. Lori and Chad are manifestly evil. They used the Church for their own evil purposes.

Thank you for covering this important issue. 1. Joseph S using 1800 terms in BOM has been questioned. Using portals and zombies, Daybell did the same, he wanted more cred. Zombies just eat others, they don't scheme where Daybell got it wrong. 2. I kid that the books of Mormonism and Visions of Glory are sequels to NT (The Book of) Revelation and OT books like Isiah. a) Without the sequels, there is no use for Mormonism. b) It's Revelation, no The Book of. 3. Like you said, there's many parallels to Evangelism/Pentacostal; however, there are some essential differences. a) Throughout the 1900s, Born Again movements gained steam to the Evan/Pent movements. b) Mostly protestants were joining non-denominational churches. Because of the Reformation, salvation was more personal, so one faith to another is not so drastic. c) Not so for Catholics. Catholics had to downright quit the Catholic faith. d) So the Carasmatic movement didn't require quiting. Ceremonies just had to be separated and not talked about. The movement is best known for speaking in tongues, alien to most Catholics. e) Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican/Episcopalian are essential the same. Minor differences and schism were mainly political. Anglicans are not really Protesants. f) The cult Christian denominations use Revelation and its sequels to scare their followers so they stay in line and it's easier to grift. g) Way before all the schism, the Catholic Church stressed that all prophecy ended shorty after the start of the Church. h) Mainstream denominations do not reference Revelation and much of the OT. The Bible has too many contradictions and God isn't so nice. i) Hell, Jesus' is it. Catholics do not and are not required to read the Bible by themselves. j) The main difference between these Hell raising Evan/Pent cults and Mormonism, each church is very automis. The preachers answer to no one about faith or finances. k) the preachers are the visionaries, they talk to God. In a way good, the preachers are public figures. l) Catholicism is lead by one leader. Even the mainstream denominations tend to be confederations. j) This is why LDS leaders pick on the CC, because it would take half the sermon just to name all the protesant denominations. h) I define the cults as: LDS, Jehovah W, nondenominational Evan/Pent, and some Baptist denominations. i) Sciencetology uses similar techniques. Except they have more time. Converts sign one billion year contracts. My theories: 1. Have leaders of LDS and Jehovah W ever been photographed in the same room. They number about the same, have NY ties, and any instigator is dead asleep a 1/2 sentence into a sermon. a) JW copied the LDS playback 50 years later. b) However, JW knew to have a founder with less baggage than Joseph S. c) Blacks are in the top leadership. With additional 50 years, one can iron out the wrinkles. 2. Is Star Wars really a biopic of LDS? The SW Emperor and LDS Nielsen sound and look a lot alike. 3. Do you think the LSD helped in the creation of JW? That way, LDS can say JW is worse. All parents in JW, fringe LDS, and Sciencetology should be jailed and the kids placed in the Child Welfare system. All kidding aside, I truly believe the last should be done now. Those poor poor kids.
