I enjoy reactions where the reactor adds a timer that goes along with the content being reacted to if its a full reaction to shows/movies/anime or long videos from other content creators. That way the viewers can just go watch the original while listening/watch the reactor in a different tab.

That is the absolute middle ground that solves almost all the problems, big corporation dont get mad, and it at least to some degree pushes people to the smaller creators that are being watched. It might be a little inconvenient to the people watching and the streamer but it can work. i saw some people who reacted to arcane do this and it worked

That would be perfect. But sadly, I doubt such videos will perform as well as the competitors who are reacting to a full on video. It just takes a new set of effort for the viewer to go open a video on a different screen and that may discourage him. But this is something I suppose can be fixed in the future with technology. Like how in FaceTime two friends can watch an Apple TV show together, but only while both of them have the subscription. I’d like to see that thing expanded to content reactions.

I think this is the most "fair" analysis of DVAU's document that i have seen over the past few days. As a fan of his, I don't know how to feel about the whole debacle because, as you say, he makes really good points and then just undercuts them with the worst and most completely unnecessary analogies. To be fair he admitted to being an asshole and apologized in his second reply to Moist Critical, but to be real, diminishing the trauma that sexual assault victims go through just to make a point about react content is sad, tone-deaf and other negative descriptive words.

yeah not gonna lie even as a fan of both I really couldn't side with Viper at all in this...Charlie made a few mistakes that were very understandable (especially after he explained them) but Viper was so absorbed in his argument, completely blind towards his ignorance while his admittidely very loyal fanbase are always gaslighting his view and agree with everything he said. His rants are a part of what makes him unique but while it's funny and endearing when he's obviously right it's also pretty cringe when he's obviously wrong. He did make a few good points, but he's clearly in the big streamer bubble and lashed out on a very nice community just because streamers like Pokimane and XqC are obviously breaking the rules...in this case a few bad apples *do not* spoil the bunch as they're not in the same basket.

Hi Liam, I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how much i appreciate this kind of content. I think that content creators are one of the major components of today's pop culture, so I'm thankful for this videos that, by showing me how the whole system works, make me think what kind of creators I want to support. Entertainment in an ideal world should be made by people who actually care about the staff they're talking about, and therefore should be economically compensated in a fair way. This is also A LOT important for the people that are thinking about going in just for popularity or for the money. So just thanks for everything Liam, keep up with the good work!

I think the best types of reaction channels are those that are transformative. Like what Liam said, the videos they're reaction to shouldn't be the one to carry them. The top reaction channels in YT have a few things in common. They don't share the whole video they're reacting too, they give their own insights to form a discussion or a social discourse within the community, and bring out their own personalities outside of what the video can offer. The appeal of reactions boil down to "connection" I think and having those traits, forms that with their viewers and makes their content transformative. Channels like Yaboiroshi, Struckbybelz, and The Normies are pretty good examples. I mean even people like Pewds and Jacksepticeye do this. (Although I understand that this doesn't apply to every top reactor)

I don't have local friends into anything I'm into so I do appreciate the existence of these types of videos where I can watch someone else be shocked or surprised by the same moments that shocked and surprised me. I follow a handful of reactors because I like hearing their commentary on the episodes afterwards, actively assessing the plot and ripping it apart to complain about it in some cases. Sometimes less fun, but does give a different viewpoint that I appreciate beyond "that was great, bye!" types of episode reviews. Especially when they notice things I didn't pick up on myself when watching.

I think ye nailed it ya :D Like I was bit wary if this was going to be "I don't like something so I'm going to be judgemental about it" video, but you really nailed what is problem with reactor content(I personally only watch them after watching something when I'm curious to see 'general people reactions', but even then I'm not super interested in them for most part) while making it clear that most of anime or video game content could be considered form of reactor content.

  • @aaronneal737

I think that the few reactors who add additional content via, giving thoughts, general opinions, further analysis, or even debating the point of views expressed can improve a video or add to rewatchability. As for "taking a break", if you want to play other peoples videos & say your giving them "exposure" why not lesser known music artists? Someone who makes, typically, shorter & more rewatchable content from the start. Just a thought, thanks for the vid on a topic I'd otherwise no nothing about. ✌

  • @OneCritWunder
    @OneCritWunder2 жыл бұрын

A few things here you seem to have misunderstood. A view taken away from a reactor doesn't go to the original content but rather goes anywhere else on the online creator market so to speak. Without reaction content, the view would go to ANY original content, therefore content that "deserves" the view. Another point is that content in darkviper's view is good when it's algorithmically good so suited to be picked up by the algorithm. As he stated in his video already it's something you have to know because good for most people means high quality and lots of working hours. Also to your last few words saying you're basically also a react channel is not what he defines as reaction content. First of all, your videos are extremely transformative of the oc and make something new out of a given work by oda. Secondly you're not just restating what happened in a chapter for example but also go beyond and try to figure out the implications and details, analysing panels, drawing styles, composition and so on.

Technology and internet content is relatively new and it's relationship with humans is complicated. A sort of natural disdain for large creators, large corporations, etc. is understandable and often warranted. This case highlights a weird 'oppressor and opressed' lens to view the world through, which is common. What's 'icky' about it is the motivation of parties involved, i.e. concern for the 'dispossessed' versus envy for the 'successful'.

It depends, I enjoy reaction content when there are lessons to be learned like a historian reacting to content that attains to their field and adding their knowledge based commentary. I also like it when I get to see fans react to something because I get to be happy I am not the only one enjoying the content. For me it depends on intent and many of these reactors seem to be just in it for the views not the art itself which is troubling.

I enjoy reaction KZreadrs reacting to mainstream commercial content (i.e., movies, TV shows, music) or to curated content from other platforms (saves me time)--particularly reactions of people from a different cultural background than those who usually consume that content (these multicultural reaction videos can be just looks of confusion, wonder and happiness, and I've enjoyed them). I also enjoy reaction videos from people applying their area of expertise to content (both to mainstream commercial content but, in this case, also to KZread channels--like you do on this channel). Everyone I've watched to the end cut the original content and their reactions down to just the bits that are truly transformative of the original content. When KZread recommended a video which I realized was someone reacting to someone else's entire KZread video (basically, an Englishman agreeing with the list video of another Englishman about what they found strange living in the U.S.), I looked up the guy who made the original content and subscribed to him (no interest in the non-transformative reactor). In the distant past when Heroes first season was freshly broadcast, the video game channel (G4, I guess) would also broadcast but with Twitter comments running down the side. I could not for the life of me understand why anyone would want to see a story unfold through that kind of filter. (The only broadcasts I've enjoyed while also consuming Twitter reactions are U.S. Senate hearings or presidential debates--ah, the fly on Pence's head). And if I've already seen a movie or T.V. episode and liked it (or hated it), I'm only interested in curated top, truly funny or insightful reactions. Not a stream of the whole thing all over again.

I actually respect the way Asmongold reacts. He turns a 15 minute video into a 40 minute discussion, which not only makes the content more derivative, but also kinda makes it a bad way to watch the video normally since he pauses so much, incentivizing you to go watch it yourself first (or after). He also consistently reacts to a lot of the same creators, so it's easy to subscribe to a particular creator, watch the video when it comes out, and wait to see what he thinks of it/how he reacts to it, essentially making two different experiences. One that gives the creator credit for their hard work (actual views), and one that gives that "exposure" (but only really the actual positive side of this) and more in-depth analysis. Most of the people who he watches intentionally put easter eggs in for him and his audience because they love when he watches the videos on stream. For the record I don't really know much about the greater react-verse since I only watch Asmongold because I've been a WoW player for 10 years, not because of any kind of Twitch culture I feel the need to be a part of.

Most reactors are like that. Hasanabi for instance has been memed being called pauseanabi, with the twitch meme of being stunlocked. I enjoy watching reactions to meme compilations. I get to see videos from platforms I don’t use (Tik Tok and such) and even if I watched the original compilation, they don’t usually credit the original creators anyway (if that’s right or wrong is another topic). Reactions to shows and manga have never been my thing. I like if a creator makes a discussion video after finishing a series giving their thoughts and reactions, but watching it live or as they experience has always seemed somewhat phoned in and doesn’t really add for me.

While I think that approach is a good thing I didn't arrive there out of any moral impulse, I simply don't see the point of watching a reaction to content I've never seen. What I'm looking for when watching reaction videos is to virtually share a piece of media that I enjoyed and see that other people enjoyed as well, it's to hear their opinions on it and start a discussion. You should not be able to just stream a show or something and then leave for like 15 or so minutes to go get food as it keeps playing for the audience. Not to mention it clearly shows the streamer is not the focus or why most seem to be there, it's the content they "react" to they never heard of or gotten around to seeing themselves. I have been following this Hasan thing for months because I actually happen to really be a big fan of Jay Exci and friends of Jay's called EFAP, which is a podcast that reviews movies and shows and whatever they feel like that went over this. The host Mauler made a 40 or so minute compilation showing how much Hasan actually just leaves his chair and plays videos for his audience, it's quite sad.

What some reactors do is they create an inventory of the content which is sort of similar to a streaming network like Netflix but not really similar because Netflix also pays the creators for the ownership of the content and also owns the platform and algorithm on which it creates the inventory while reactors neither rent nor purchase the content and neither owns the platform nor algorithm, they just find content and create inventory which becomes precious to the consumers.

Since you've commented on other One Piece youtubers quite a bit, how do you feel about BDALaw (who you've commented on a few times) and him occasionally streaming his reactions to other youtube one piece content? He does quite a bit of his own content as well, but does also react to some other content producers occasionally as well, most notably Ohara's theories. Also if you changed something with your editing process recently, several of your videos I've watched in the last couple days have a spot or two where you are repeating a second or two of the video (11:44 and 11:46 for a timestamp example in this video).

I think you greatly misunderstood one big point he was trying to make Liam. DVAU didn't say those views would go to the video being reacted to, in fact he said that often the creator whos video is being reacted to is the only one gaining something. Instead, all of that time people spend watching a video of someone reacting would be spent watching something else instead and if no reaction videos existed much more original content would be consumed in general eventually leading to smaller creators getting more views in general and those with quality content having a better chance to be discovered and make their careers. I've never even heard of DVAU before this and based on the one video I don't think I enjoy his personality enough to watch a second one, but I do find myself agreeing with most of what hes saying. Thanks for the fair analysis!

Honestly I find this hard to believe. People watch those reactors for their reactions alone. KZread algorithm knows this. So it will push videos of the said reactors to audience who are interested in everything about those said reactors. These audience are most likely not going to be part of the target audience the original content creators will expose to. Hypothetically if you took all the reaction content off KZread. The fans of Pokemane, MoistCritical will still only get exposed to Pokemane and Moist videos. And the original content creators will expose to their target audience. That's just how KZread algorithm works. What happens when a huge content creator like Moist reacts to a small channel that excels in a niche is, it brings exposure to people who are not part of that channel's natural target audience, hence expands Moist's fans' algorithm to the said small channel. Unless Moist is reacting to a direct competing channel that shares the same niche as Moist. I just can't see how this is mis-directing views that would've gone to the original content creators to the reactor's channels, if they don't share the same target audience to begin with.

@@qiuhuanghanneil "I just can't see how this is mis-directing views that would've gone to the original content creators to the reactor's channels" Did you even read my comment you misunderstood the exact same thing as I said Liam did. The views would not go to that exact same video, instead they would go to any other video in the internet and if no reaction content was made all that consumed content would be original content on its original channel eventually leading to smaller channels having bigger chance alltogether to be discovered by people naturally and not by a reaction streamer.

@@Indaelcio I don't think I misunderstood what you said. Your point being that KZread algorithm has a tendency to pick up reactional content especially from bigger channels, so it results original content getting less traffic than what they deserve. My argument was that the algorithm picks up content that's around the audience niche. Many original content come from channels that target a specific audience. For those specific audience, the algorithm won't pick up reactional content for them. Unless the reactional channel share the same niche as the original contents channel. That is often not the case. Because people who follow those reactional channel for the channel figures personalities. If we took the reactional content out of equation, the algorithm won't change because the niche doesn't change. If I still misunderstood what you said, feel free to correct me. But in return I'd appreciate if you show some understanding of my argument.

Funny thing is original reaction channels get their views from people who love a series and wants to see people react to their favorite scenes (one piece backstories or merry's death for example) and if they like the way someone reacts they'll watch other vids out of their series. And it's now these big streamers that have never had a reactions following that hop on the band wagon and massive start streaming show like a freaking movie theater. And with this endanger these relatively smaller streamers and youtubers who made their career out of this tyoe of content and actually make time to edit video's to upload them on KZread etc. It's rather sad 2bh..

I largely agree with the document. I do wonder if the section everyone is getting upset about may be an attempt at comedy though. I know just by reading some of my scripts, jokes are placed in there but don't seem like they'll land until they are actually said because you have to consider tone, timing, associated editing, etc. It seems a bit premature that everyone critical of the document is making it out to be that but I've experienced jokes hitting or missing as well. It's a fine line and it could be as tasteless as the document makes it seem.

Before watching this vid. A gripe of mine with the reactor hate is how often times it comes across like toxic jealousy. Even if the reactor in question is a terrible person wich pollutes the discussion. A reactor I can give for this is Suzy lu. I used to follow her and in my oppinion at the time, she was fine. A little slow on the up take and had a few too many simps in her comment section but she seemed fine to me. I then started to notice a bunch of videos supposedly exposi g her as a terrible person. The problem though is that rather then get to the point. Nearly all those videos spent 5-10 minutes of 10-15 minute videos ranting about reaction channels as a whole and even throwing hate at gaming channels. Yes as a whole. In general. No acceptions. Like what? I typically never made it to the point where they actually talked about what suzy lu did because most of their videos did such a good job of painting an ugly, jealpus and unreliable image of the creator I was watching. At that point, their opinion was meaningless to me. (And I wasn't gonna waste time lookimg into it if people like that is who I would need to listen too. Lifes too short.) Then I watched a video from a creator I typically trusted for info. I watched the video, really hoping he wouldn't also make himself out to be a toxic individual. Then to my suprise, he actually got to the fucking point at the start of the video. And I finally saw that suzy was a terrible person. Long story short. Reaction channels are kinda over hated. That makes it easier for the really bad reactors to thrive

    1. The toast ban was staged (edit: I was wrong, apparently toast ban was real, but it appeared stage because he was trying to fake it before he actually did get banned) 2. Jay exci isn't a great example, although yes Hasan fucked up by going to cook, he later proceeded to apologize to him because he didn't react to the vid. It should be mentioned that this is not normally the case for Hasan, as he normally doubles the length of the vid, this can be seen when searching "Hasan reacts to ________". This may be inaccurate, but if I remember correctly, jay tweeted when Hasan was streaming that the views on his vid went up, and asked which streamer was reacting to his vid now in a positive manner, I could be wrong about this tho. Also, jay live reacted to Hasan's 8-10 hour stream with nazis... stealing a whole lot more content than what Hasan stole... and did it with nazis. 3. Although yes, streamers could just react to other people's content when the creator of it specifically tells them not to, has that happened? and if, so why not use them as examples instead of using poki and Hasan? overall, good vid, just some details need to be corrected or expanded on

as a person who does watch Hassan's stream from time to time sometimes he could do a better job at pausing the video when he's leaving he says he watches it on his phone but I think he should just pause the video when he's going to go pee and then come back and restart the video from where he left off. I don't mind react channels like channels that are dedicated to reacting especially when they cut up the reaction to key moments where they have an actual reaction. But when they just stare at the video and don't give any commentary as to what's going on yeah I can see why some content creators have issue with that. I really don't mind if experts were reacting to videos and giving their expert opinions on what's going on and I really don't mind if non-experts were watching some videos pausing it to see if an information is accurate and then restarting the video. In the case of watching an anime or a TV show I don't mind if they pause the video to give their opinion on a certain scene and then restarting it. Basically I need some actual content from the reactor and not just them staring at it. But sometimes these twitch streamers are like those reactors who just stare at it and I see no value if they need to take a break just pause their stream go take that break and then go back to streaming.

I think reaction videos are ok as long as the reactor actually offers something of value to the video. Like from their own experiences or field of expertise. But if all their reactions amount to is to say "what?", "OMG" and similar overblown reactions, there is not much value to be gained, and the laziest form of content to make. It is mainly someone else showing you how you are supposed to react to a certain scene. In Japan for example, something similar is being used in that idols and celebs are shown on tv shows in a small window in the corner reacting to the actual tv show. That way they are showing you how you are supposed to emotionally react to the scene played.
