Archery | This Is Not A Compound Sight

Спорт

We look at a common mistake in identifying "hunting" or "multi-pin" sights in response to a comment from SurvivalLilly ( • If you show up with th... ). There is, in fact, nothing crazy about using this sight. It's the proper sight for a hunting bow.

For those hunting with recurve bow a 3 pin hunting sight is good enough. With no bow sight on a hunting recurve bow it is very difficult to achieve accuracy above 20 yards range. To be good at bare bow shooting takes a lot of practice.

People have been taking down animals of all kinds with bows for a thousand years before sights were ever a thing, and plenty of people hunt now without sights. I've never used a sight, and I have no problem at all taking down deer, elk, or bears at ranges of 20-30 yards. Whether you are using a sight or not, accuracy takes practice. It will no doubt come faster and easier with a sight, but you still have to put the work in and practice regularly. Shooting bare bow, if you practice regularly thru-out the year, you should have no problem being accurate enough to takedown game by the time hunting season rolls around.

That said, I don't really need it then. Because I'm pretty good without it. Do I need to use a different anchor point? I seat my hand at the corner of my mouth. Compound and recurve bow sights have the same mounting points and screws into the riser, but they're designed for different levels of energy, about 100 feet per second between the two types. For apertures, 8-32 threaded screws is the standard for recurve and 10-32 is the standard for compound. The worry is that thinner recurve apertures could be damaged on a compound. 8-32 threaded apertures that can hold a magnified lens are rare, while most 10-32 apertures (scopes) are meant to be magnified. Recurve sights also usually have longer travel for both windage and elevation, and a longer sight rod for longer sight radius, which are all useful when shooting at slower speeds.

bow sights have a universal standard (i'm not aware of any brands which are exceptions but they might exist). basically pick and choose whichever you fancy. if you're aiming for longer distance and general target, go with the target style sights because there is more vertical adjustment (able to use over longer distances) and the lack of a housing means you're less likely to have clearance issues with the arrows/fletchings. something like the cartel focus ex recurve sight. I hesitate to go cheaper because it starts becoming all plastic. It will definitely be a good sight to tinker with and learn on. for the multipin/hunting sights i would recommend something like the trophy ridge joker 3 (3pin) it's great in low light if you're wanting to use it for actual hunting and I believe you can buy a sight light to make the fiber optic pins glow when the sun is down.

I would really like to put a hunting sight on my recurve, but the couple of times I tried, I ended up shooting tight groups... 10 inches to the right of the target. My windage adjustment was maxed out. Apparently there's something about my body geometry that causes this. My two local archery shops recommended that I machine myself a custom, extra-long windage bar, but I have to believe there's one out there already. Have you ever seen anything like that?

This is just a guess, but it seems that you may be crossdominant. For example, shooting right handed and also being left eye dominant. Solutions can include improved string alignment, a lower anchor point (to improve alignment), a peep sight, or half closing the left eye. This was my challenge, and I was able to work through it. However, it requires diligent practice to maintain accuracy.

You can use if you want, but recurve shooter don't use peep sight. Because recurve shooter's anchor point maked diffecult to use peep sight for correct sight alingnment. You can shoot just fine with just the sight. Even you can shoot compound without peep sight. It's just another refference point on your bowstring as you look on your sight extactly same way every time. That means less variable.

It also provides no advantage, and introduces several disadvantages. The main purpose of the multi-pin sight is to have several distances pre-sighted so that you can acquire a target at any distance. This obviously useful in the field when you can't make adjustments when hunting. In competition, you are only ever shooting at one target at one distance at any one time. This is why target sights are single-pin and are adjustable - you move your sight when you move distance. Multi-pin sights have multiple drawbacks, notably that the sight picture is cluttered with pins, and that you can't easily adjust for windage and elevation for whatever conditions you face. Pins have to be moved individually by using an Allen key. You pretty much zero all your sight pins at the range, then use them when you get to the field.

I have noticed on my ragim impala if you fit a target sight and put the pin to the top of it you can't see the pin because of the riser so you can't use the full range of the sight but looking at where the site block sits I bet if I put a hunting sight on it iI would see it just fine which makes sense since it is a hunting/field bow. However a lot of sites you buy from perpetuate the myth that it is soley a compound sight by listing it as or under compound sights. For instance on merlin archery where I shop from alot all hunting sights are listed as compound....either way thanks to your video clarifying things I might get a cheap three pin for my field recurve since I plan on joining a 3d club and I am already using things like bever puffs and a hunting silencer (for the convienience of course).

It is a compound sight as well. Many manufacturers ship this type of sight on compound bow kits they sell from the factory. It does not mean you can not use it on any bow/weapon that has the proper mounting holes. On the same token, a single pin sight is not a target sight. Sights are sights however some designs are better suited for certain conditions or setups. One size does not fit all.

Nu, I agree with your assessment - Multi-Pin does not constitute which bow to use it with. Purist may snark at it, but if one is not participating in competition, anything that you want to use on your bow that helps you hit the target is fair game. When in competition, follow the rules :)

Purest do the entire sport a disservice. Archery supply stores tend to follow what the purists say and thus mislead people who are trying to use the shortcuts to improve their shooting. Not everyone is a gifted Archer, but everyone does crave to shoot better. Let us have our shortcuts so that shooting is more pleasurable! I was really good for a while at instinctive shooting but it took thousands of shots to get there and the accuracy faded quickly when I quit practicing so much.

(a freestyle unlimited compound archer) will use a target compound sight, ie longer arm and scope , A multi-pin sight on a recurve is near useless as the pins are to close to each other.A compound shoots much faster and flatter allowing for the pins to be close,,,I have this conversation every few weeks with new archers at the club who come with their new eBay kit, bless em, love ya work .

This is not a helpful way of describing the nature of archery sights. There is no meaningful distinction between sights intended for use with compound bows and those for traditional bows. The level of complexity of the mount is entirely irrelevant. There are two design distinctions that are somewhat useful: 1) target archery vs hunting applications; and 2) how different designs account for varying levels of vibration and shock. In general, as long as a particular sight can be adjusted for the ranges that a particular archer enjoys shooting at, then that sight is available for use, regardless of type of bow the archer is using. There are other considerations, like the possible need for multiple pins or low-light visibility (both of great importance to hunting archers), but these are not distinctions that speak to the type of bow used. If the sight can be solidly mounted to the bow and can be reliably adjusted to the ranges required, then it's a go.

I agree that a multipin sight doesn't have to be compound sight. I only find it a bit strange that you classify more complicated sights (mentioned in 1:14) as compound sights. If you ask me those can be used on a recurve bow as well. The one you are holding in your hand is just a simpler/cheaper version than the sights you showed at 1:14.

NU, you are technically correct (the best kind of correct!), however, I think you're being a little disingenuous this time saying a multi-pin sight is expected. Multi-pin sights are not even legal in any WA target competition I'm aware of (incl Field and 3D) unless you are in a freestyle division, ie, compound. If you are hunting with a recurve most people around my parts are going full trad/barebow.

I supposed I failed to provide the context. I thought it was implicit that a hunting sight would not be unusual when hunting. It's not used for competition, and yes, it seems that hunters would either go full compound or full trad recurve. The point was that hunting bows are tapped with bushings so that they can use hunting sights, so it's not crazy or unusual to use a multi-pin sight with a hunting recurve to hunt.

You made it pretty clear you were talking about hunting, and yes it's a hunting sight, but then you show SurvivalLilly on a 3D course. It's a nit, but your typical video also tends more "Brady Ellison" than "Grizzly Jim". I wouldn't want new archers showing up at a Field/3D competition only to be lumped with the compounders going "but NUSensei said..."

@@davidw860 It's kind of ironic that you mention that. Pretty much everything I do triggers some negative response from someone pointing out that [technique] is not applicable to hunting, and now I cover a hunting equipment topic and people are saying that it's not applicable to competition. In the end, if you're not competing, you can use any equipment you want in any way you want. You can use a multi-pin hunting sight at a target range or a 3D course and it's fine - that's how many hunters get their sight settings and hone their skill. If you compete, you need to follow competition rules. But yeah, you're absolutely right in your observation.

well, sorry guys but iv been doing this 30yrs,,at state and national, and international level,, you will never see a multi-pin sight on a compound without a peep. same as you will never see a multi-pin sight at all on recurve, but hey check it out yourself, there is plenty of how to set up a sight on ytube for both comp and recurve,or check out the Australian bowhunters association website www.bowhunters.org.au they are the oz body for field archer inc Ifaa.Sensei you shoot in aa, in your time how many recurves have you seen at the club or at a comp with a multi-pin sight?

    - You won't see a pin sight without a peep on a compound bow because...compound bows are almost universally set up with peeps. You can shoot a compound bow without a peep sight, and you can use a pin sight without a peep. - Perhaps you won't see a multi-pin sight on a recurve in competition, but they're certainly used. Pin sights are sold as generic "bow" sights and are often packaged with RTH kits. My observation with the use of pin sights on recurves is that most people prefer to shoot barebow because it's...kind of the point of recurve; just as it's a bit weird to shoot a compound barebow with fingers. - We've had one guy at our club who competed with us with a Martin Saber hunting setup and a multi-pin sight. Shot up to 50m in our competitions. There's no benefit to using multiple pins in a format where target distance is non-variable. Besides, multi-pin hunting sights wouldn't be legal under AA competition rules.

@@NUSensei well in my circles,(field archery Australia)if you tried to shoot a comp bow with sights and no peep you would be pulled aside. the same would go if you had a multi-pin on a recurve I never suggested a multi-pin in aa that's pointless obviously! But field archery is done with and without marked distances, around a 20 or 28 target course, The game is far more complicated than static wa style archery, from a safety point ,an archer not using there equipment in the prescribed manner could see an arrow going dangerously high,in aa that's fine as there is room behind the target , but in field archery it can mean an arrow heading towards another group of archers .. The guy you mention that shot out to 50 without a peep,he would be closely monitored at club level, but not allowed to shoot higher than club level until he set his bow up correctly and safely. Also how many new archers or any archers do you know who have a constant perfect anchor ?

@@iceblue1963 We're comparing target, field and 3D rules, but at the same time we're talking about a hunting sight used for bowhunting, not competition. You won't see a multi-pin sight on a recurve at a target event or a field course because either the rules don't allow one, or there's no reason to use one. I'm not sure what you're getting at with the anchor point. Being inconsistent with the anchor is problematic regardless of what style you shoot or what sight you use. It doesn't preclude you from using a sight.

Paradoxically, any recurve that a multi pin sight would not look out of place on is invariably more effectively shot without one. Whenever I see a bow with a multi pin sight I can't help but think 1) it's great to see new people taking up archery. 2) if they stick at it and learn how to shoot, that sight won't be there for long. 3) I bet that came with a captive rest, a stabilizer, a peep and some cat's whiskers in a cheap ebay bundle. Multi pin sights and whisker biscuits on a recurve are symbolic of an archer searching for quick fixes to a frustrating lack of consistency in their shooting, to which I say; every complex problem has a simple solution.........that doesn't work. It's said that mastery of an activity requires that one invest 10,000 hrs of practice. So if you want to get better, shoot more!

Comments like this are symbolic of the elitism that is present in archery that scares off new people. There is no fault in someone choosing to use more precise tools to achieve precision, and learning to shoot without sights isn't a sign of progression; it's a lateral skill. This "pathway" that they're supposedly meant to follow to become a better archer is arbitrarily based on what individuals value, not what is effective. What annoys me is that new archers won't stick it out and learn how to shoot because people keep judging them and telling them they're doing it wrong, in a pursuit that is 100% individual and that have absolutely no bearing on how other people shoot. These "solutions" don't work because no one teaches them how to use their tools, and instead boast about how good they are without these modern contraptions.

@@space.youtube I have shot for over ten thousand hours with one type of bow and I definitely still haven't mastered it even though I shoot for at least three hours every day (on proper training days between 6-8 hours which is 5-6 days a week). A multi pin sight is a better reference then no sight at all. It will help to increase the accuracy of an archer by giving them a consistent reference point to aim with. And also a bow does not shoot better or worse with or without a sight. A sight is there to help the archer. It does not reduce or enhance the accuracy of the bow. I would also caution you on telling other people to just shoot more and get better unless you have a half decent resume to back it up.

Don't get me wrong 'archery elitism' is a real thing, particularly at clubs (and on social media, even some KZread channels) and does deter some people, but how does that remotely have anything to do with what I think to myself when I see multi pin sights or a whisker biscuit on a recurve bow? Ironically, your knee jerk reactionary thought crime policing is far more indicative of the 'archery elitism' you lament. Before climbing on this high horse maybe you should consider your back catalogue of videos. Pot, kettle, black. Just sayin.
