In a hilarious turn of events, I think Microsoft should make a smart speaker running a version of ChatGPT and some voice recognition software.

that would be such a gamechanger. like really, you can now not only use ChatGPT through chats (which is the main idea), but to integrate it with voice recognition? I reckon someone would marry their speaker in the future no cap

I bought a mini to replace it and it’s worked perfectly since. I would imagine the original homepod had some kind of fundamental issue combined with not selling well equalled discontinuing it…
The closing note, he almost lost it 🤣 That was gold.
"Maybe we were too early". I think that's bang on. $300 was a lot to ask of people for their first Apple smart speaker. I kinda agree with Marques on this one. Homepods are great, and sound great, but they're still a tad too expensive and quite limited. Personally, I'm pretty invested in Apple's eco-system but when it came to whole-house audio, I chose Sonos. It's not cheap but, frankly, it's not a whole lot more expensive than buying multiple Homepods. Speaking of which, MKBHD, I've never seen you review Sonos products. 🤔 Is there a reason for that? Hands down, IMHO, I still think Sonos offers the best multi-room audio system on the market today. You need to check it out.
Thanks for the as always concise video Marques. So I already have a stereo setup combining 2 minis... how do you think they would compare sound-wise vs the output from the new Homepod? Better or worse? 2 minis or 1 new HP would be louder?
I waited until I could find the OG HomePods for under $250 and have a stereo pair for music. They have been solid for me, if I didn’t already have dedicated sound in the livingroom I would use them for the projector. I really enjoy them I just want them to support the use of two other HomePods for a surround setup. Just waiting on that Apple.

When he said “Hey siri what’s the temperature outside” my HomePod Siri also activated and surprised me 🤣
This is a fair and honest review. Siri wasn't even a consideration for me. I purchased the original HomePods primarily as high fidelity audio components that mesh with my Apple ecosystem. So far, they haven't disappointed. And when Apply finally supported home theater with Apple TV 4K, their function expanded considerably. The sound reproduction coupled with Dolby Atmos is remarkable... room-filled spatial sound with impressive deep bass performance. It may not compare to the highest home theater setups, but it'll do a phenomenal job for the price. Even one HomePod could suffice. Whether HomePod 2.0 will succeed is another story. Home Theater capability could give it life if it's recognized by enough people. To the Apple TV owners considering an upgrade, do it. You'll be amazed. :)

I have a HomePod mini in my apartment, and my parents use 2 HomePods as TV speakers. Honestly, even HomePod minis are kind of premium. But you really have a great audio quality with these things, especially the big HomePod. The microphones could hear you not just across the room but actually across the whole floor, around a few corners. Also, in several countries the first home pod was not available for over a year. Personally I prefer the HomePod over the HomePod mini. One thing you should note that’s kind of a bummer: You can not use HomePods as Speakers for Macs. You can do video and music, but not games or system sound or anything else that can not be pre-cached for the matter.

I think the problem with original HomePod was that it was missing the mini option. A $350 cost of entry just to try out an Apple speaker is a big ask. Now that there’s a HomePod mini and people can try a lower risk and lower investment to see if they even like HomePod they’ll be more open to paying up to get a better HomePod experience. Arguably the HomePod mini should have been Apple’s first smart speaker product and then followed by the more premium HomePod. While still expensive, I think the new HomePod will do better with the HomePod mini around. No one would have bought Alexa/Google speakers if the first and only options had cost $350 dollars.

I think it has a chance this time because the $99 mini buyers might upgrade if they've had a good experience. Good review... Glad you hit the points I wanted to hear. I actually did order a mini and a homepod 2 since I was able to take advantage of my cousin's Apple employee 25% off coupon. So, it was more about the saving at this point. We pretty much are an Apple family here and this would also be a great addition. I wanted to purchase a set of Sono speakers instead and then an Apple mini, but I think I did well considering my purchase was $316 total. I'm also a bit bitter with Sonos discontinuing my speaker's software. They stopped supporting the software and pretty much made my Sonos 3 and soundbar useless. Anyway, looking forward to hearing and testing these two products out.

just to clarify for us audio pro's, true Atmos sound is 7.1.2 (left, center, right, 4 rear surrounds, sub and 2 overheads), the best you'll get with multiple HomePods is stereo. And if you add more than 2, it'll be summed to the same mono signal in each speaker, no separation. Which will not give you the experience the sound mixers intended (with very specific information moving through the surrounds and overheads). in case anyone cares. haha

Unfortunately there’s a bit more gray area than that. You’ve listed minimum requirements for true multichannel Atmos, but a setup can truly be however many speakers you’d like, or it can just be binaural (headphones plus an HRTF). Then there’s the fact that a HomePod is not just a mono speaker - there are five theaters within that intelligently project sound in different directions. Is it a true Atmos experience? Technically not. But is the experience as simple as mono or stereo? Also no.
I was one of the engineers working on it, the only thing we changed was the core, the audio speaks are just "renewed" version of the last one the are produced by the same company using the same methods.
Excellent analysis. Sharp delivery.
I have that setup with an LG TV (around $500) and two 1st gen HomePods. They’re just amazing! Love HomePod minis and have 2. If you want something with more oomph with airplay. IKEA Sonos symfonisk is amazing. And very price effective. Even has a Ethernet jack!
Thanks for the speakers review !) Can you please tell me HomePod 2 will work well with Mac Mini / Mac Studio as desktop speakers? - After rebooting or shutting down the Mac Mini, will I need to manually turn on the HomePod 2 and connect the speakers to the Mac Mini each time? - Will there be a sound delay when watching videos on a Mac Mini?
I have got 3 now. All bought second hand barely used. The first two I got for 110 each and the second was 170, so hard to pass up. I love them. The bass is absolutely crazy and it is nice that you can use just these speakers for a home theatre type sound quality.
Really interested to know if the new one sounds noticeably better than the old. That'd be a tough feat since the old one sounds so good ... so not sure how much they can squeeze out of new hardware, chip and signal processing.

Always enjoy your take. I have a 27" iMac from late 2015. I recently upgraded memory to 32 GB. It has one TB of storage. I love the 5K monitor and it looks like I will have to buy at least a Mac Mini and a 27" Apple Studio to get the same 5K features with built in speakers and camera. 17.3M subscribers. You rock. Any suggestions would be appreciated. FYI in 2007 I bought four first generation iPhones that only worked with ATT. Verizon passed. It became a traction in our family to have a iPhone Christmas for a while. Take care, Guy
I think I’m going to pick up a home pod mini ! I need to go back at rewatch your review tho !
I use 2 original HomePods in the HDMI ARC setup, and they sound phenomenal in our living room. All working with consoles too. Yes there's a tiiiiny bit of latency, especially for games that use fast and sharp sounds, but these speakers either side of the TV with no sound bar come across wonderful. And yeah, I'm one of the handful of crazies that have them around the home too. Nothing I love more than playing my music at a semi-low level all around the home and being able to just walk around doing what I'm doing with my music all around, and sounding nice and full in every room.

Good video and review. I think however that we should consider two aspects. The first one is: will it be a flop? I think Apple wanted to build the best smart speaker in sound quality (obviously in a certain range of money). The best user experience. I think it lacked in their lineup. HomePod mini is a great quality speaker for its low price but for users that want more they can now buy a superior product. Is the price of HomePod too high? Maybe compared to Amazon or Google products but what about the quality? Moreover Apple supports their products for too many years that the price in this thinking is not always a very great problem (last month they release a fix for ios12 that is phones older 10 years! Crazy if we think about Android competitors). The second aspect is Siri. Is really too bad? When I switched from Android to Apple years ago Google Assistant was superior in web search and I found Siri superior in the interaction with device functions. Is nowadays still the case today? For me the interaction with phone is more important than web searching. I want from an assistant that it is a sort of butler. Moreover I think that apple privacy could also be a limit in the developing of Siri (obviously). I think this aspect should be well considered.
That fiery outro 🔥
So good to hear honest reviews, sometimes good, sometimes bad, just as it should be
Great review! As far as TV speakers go.. I opted for Sonos. Not a "smart" speaker but has incredible audio quality and bass. I use my HomePod (1st one) in my house for Apple Music and Siri. I also like the Mini's as a stereo pair I use in my music room. The humidity feature (now "released") lets me know if my room humidity is good for my guitars. Keep up the great work here!

I was debating getting the Sonos arc for my LG C1. Now, I’m debating on maybe trying two of these HomePods and save $300 🤔
Man, $300 for a small speaker puts them squarely up against some amazing stuff from Bose, Sony, and JBL. All of those pair straight up with bluetooth, have microphones built in (with most of them), and have the benefit of having a battery built into them so you can take them places.
Can you do a studio pair with the new HomePod but also use 2 minis as surround sound behind?
Thanks for keepin it 💯 - and giving the most honest reviews of tech. It helps how you put the products in context too.

@@XP9724 how does pointing out your stupid comment make us a snowflake? complimenting is great but why do you feel the need to exaggerate like that? Do you think he'll like your comment if you do?
You can probably avoid the stains on your table just by wiping it off first. I don’t know why but a very powerful solvent smell came from the HomePod box. I wiped the bottom clean and no marking on the wood.
The speakers talking to each other was really good! 🤣🤣
I've been using the original HomePod since 2018 and it's true, they deliver a powerful and great sound. Despite being able to fill bigger rooms, the bass tends to get lost. A standalone subwoofer would have complemented the HomePod and provided full-room sound.
On the question about this being successful or not, I think it will be. I view the original HomePod as a test run, it didn’t really work out as expected, but when the HomePod mini came out, the ecosystem started to be established. I think that the new HomePod will be successful as there is now a “market” for these things now.

Yea I’m having the same thought as u. First one was a proof of concept but people weren’t prepared to spend that much money on a smart speaker. Then they released the minis and that served as their barrier breaking HomePod. Now that people are acquainted to the idea of HomePods, they now have the option to get the big one again for better sound quality, if that’s what they want.

You made me laugh with the closing comment! Haha Good review!
I was working for Apple Retail when Tim launched the first HomePod. When I took my old iPod Hi Fi into the store to compare, the HomePod couldn't compete. Nevermind that it doesn't even have an aux in. So I passed on it at 1/2 off (employee). After the initial push, sales dropped off a cliff. He will keep bringing it back until it gains acceptance.
I have two of the old original HomePod in the lounge set up in stereo. They sound great and work very well for surround sound in a smaller room. The updated version just refines the old HomePod and brings it up to date with thread etc. Glad that Apple have brought it back as a option

But to not be able to use whatever music software we want, thats just a big fail in my book (owning more than +10 Apple products at home)...
I have been using the original HomePods as a Dolby Atmos set up for my LG OLED TV. I have had the set up for a few years now. And it’s amazing. The further apart you have the speakers the better. (At least 1.5m away from the TV and preferably in a corner to reflect sound). But they are great. And no stupid cables. (Other than the paper cable).

@@LukeSchaeferFilms I use mine through my Apple TV 4K gen 2. That allows you to permanently use a stereo (Dolby Atmos) double HomePod system.
