Seems like an easy enough mod. You can see light through the ear cup, all you would have to do is block the vent hole, perforate the chamber between the fans and the earcups and remove the filters for extra airflow. Filter not needed cause ears don't breathe.

The crazy part is that some of their prototypes look a whole lot less "dyson", but could easily find a market in the cosplay and "cyber punk" crowd. The sleek, Dyson-brand design aesthetic kinda ruins this concept by itself in an odd way.

This product is really for environmental pollutants, like high aqi from dust, which affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. I can guarantee you that they have MANY consultants, and they did multiple rounds of testing and focus groups. The problem is not whether or not companies receive the information it is whether or not they deign to accept it. And sadly the people responsible for green lighting ideas live in a bubble of wealth which no amount of information can penetrate. More than likely, this thing is just to get people talking about the brand to hopefully boost sales of their other products.

I used to work in Dyson, and before I left the company I was working on this product. What I can say is, it is the first and very weird collaboration between the UK Dyson Engineering team, Malaysia Dyson Engineering team and China team. We all worked really hard on this product and it really has tonnes of features, but like what this video is suggesting, it creates more problems than it solves

it was one of the bravest things i've ever seen.

As a digital marketer, they did a great job actually!! About 8 million people now just from this KZread channel and in just 4 months started to know their company and probably will remember their name as well! Genius Top-of-the-Funnel marketing campaign!

This was 100% an engineering challenge for minimising the vacuum and filters, experimenting with speaker drivers, and afterwards they thought “sod it, let’s give it a go on the store”.

I don’t believe I ever felt a need to purify the air I breathe while simultaneously donning a pair of over the ear headphones.

Did not expect to learn about Brownian motion of covid particles and loss leader marketing strategy in a tech video. This was hilariously entertaining and informative. I do like the idea of joystick controls on the ear cup.

From an engineering perspective, it's pretty amazing to create a motorised air-purifier system that fits on your head, even if it is completely unnecessary.

funnily i work a second job as a cleaner and dyson are the least reliable and most expensive vacuums on the market, but we keep getting them anyway cus it's a dyson and it isnt our money :) we have 2-3 new ones in storage to replace 1 hoover at all times due to the unreliability. Never seen a cordless dyson last more than 6 months. We arent cleaning huge mess either, just a fckin bank lol.

I rebuilt an old metal Kirby that takes bags, it is the best and most powerful vacuum I have used. Cordless and bagless vacuums stink, they need constant maintenance to keep filters clean. Yes there is no bag, but they don't tell you there is a filter (or 3) :)

I saw an ad for this product in the streets a couple of weeks ago and my first thought was: It's completely dystopian.

This is actually very similar to an idea I've had for a long time. Not because I'm an engineer or anything, but because I read a lot of comic books. I always thought it would be cool to have some self contained helmet type thing that managed your audio, air, could filter your voice, maybe some visual stuff but that's going overboard, built in camera, etc. Like a smart helmet basically. I could never imagine a version where it wasn't some giant bulky thing that looked ridiculous on your head, I'm glad to know Dyson didn't figure that out either.

The fact that the battery goes from 50 hours to 2 the moment you turn the filter on is craaaazy ☠️

Fun fact: James Dyson tried over 5000 different prototypes of a bagless vacuum cleaner before getting a manufacturer on board - and that manufacturer only sold in Japan. Dyson used that money to launch his own business. The rest is history. So, of all inventors, Mr. Dyson seems to be familiar with hit and misses a lot. All that said, I just hope there aren't 5000 prototypes of these headphones LOL

Yep, Dyson tried to copy an industrial bagless cyclone vacuum he once saw in a sawmill. It's impressive that be built 5127 prototypes in five years... In any case, I guess his patented idea is just to use cyclonic separation in a (domestic) appliance. And to provide at least one "industrial strength" feature (apart from the pink color), he added an "industrial strength" price (equivalent to 10,000€ in 2023 money,).

I would say, he is not a really good inventor if it really did take him 5,000 prototypes to make, for all intents and purposes, a pretty straightforward product. I think a lot of DYSON'S products remind me of BOSE. Lots of marketing hype and premium prices.

Thanks for taking one for the team. When you did the porta-potty test, my respect for you sky rocketed. I do like the joystick idea for music control though.

I used to work at Dyson and honestly all of us in the non engineering departments thought it was a joke, yet another random thing the engineers work on that gets canned after years of development and £££££ - but here we are!

Dyson is a joke. It's just a marketing and very expensive price which makes people think it's the best. It's not. 😂

They also did a washing machine, well in the UK at least. Instead of one drum rotating, it was split in half which went in opposite directions. In principal, it would wash much better but in practice, components failed constantly and it chewed clothes. Definitely a miss!

They were hideous colours too, and Dyson swiftly killed them off. I don’t predict the headphones lasting very long either, and I’m surprised the lighting range has lasted as long as it has either…

No lie, this would've been the most popular products in the late 90s and early 00s internet cafes. The smoke in there, wow, I'll never forget how the AC/smoke smelled like.

There was a PSA in my country on pollution and how our world is going to change if we didn't do something. This was in the mid-eighties. Rich people with air filtration masks, on their 'portable' phones, ignoring the poor who can only afford small hits of clean air from a type of vending machines.

This was a very fun video to watch. Also I really appreciate you called an expert to explain the product from medical point of view. Great video as always.

Don't forget the Dyson washing machine from 2000!

I actually love the idea behind the headphones. Like i would buy it tbh, but maybe after some improvements. I just feel that the air purifying part is much better than the normal air. Like the doctor was saying that it will push the cold air inside ur mouth or nose, but isn't the cold air already in if ur breathing normally?

Yeah. Furthermore, sit in front of a fan or an air conditioner and let it blow air directly into your eyes. Your eyes will dry out and you'll start tearing up in a very short amount of time. Same thing goes for the inside of your nose. Both areas are protected by a mucous membrane that protect you against infection and debris and both become less effective when dried out. If you already have sensitive nostrils you can even get nose bleeds from having cold air constantly blown up your nose. I'm with Dr. Mike, this product creates more problems than it solves.

If I was a Dyson Marketing Employee, I would be crying right now. This is content-cop levels of dissection and destruction 🔥

Crying from happiness, you mean? This video is one of the best marketing ads for Dyson. Before talking about the headphones, he also mentioned how amazing Dyson is, and how their vacuum cleaners, and bladeless fans, and hair dryers are amazing. As the video said, this is a perfect "lossless leader".

From the look of the filter, it's for physical filtration only (e.g. dust). To remove chemical vapors (gas, "porta-potty", etc.), you need different materials (usually activated carbon). Dyson tried to make a PAPR which doesn't need a seal but at least they admit it's not a medical grade. I knew this product was a joke the first ad I saw. Glad you called them out on this one!

It does look like the electrostatic filters are impregnated with carbon, but not nearly enough to remove chemicals/VOCs
