I have lived in Mexico for the past 8 years, and have a Deer Head, but my research indicates something most have never considered. The Dear Head is actually a Mexican dog that has been around here for the past 1100 years and was a favorite of the Toltecs. In the Nahuatl language they are called a Deer Head Techichi...meaning "little dog"....The Techichi is the parent breed where the Apple Head is derived from. The Apple Head Chihuahua, actually called the Chihuahueno here in Mexico, is a genetic mutation brought about by unscrupulous breeders, trying to breed the smallest dogs possible. The Apple Head first appeared around 1858 in the Northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.....Put the two dogs side by side and it is readily apparent that they are very different. The Apple heads have about half the teeth that the Deer Head does, and they usually have a molera, or hole in the top of their skulls....and then there are the big bug eyes. The Deer Heads are usually healthier and live longer than the Apple Heads....I have a Deer Head Techichi, named Dinamita, which is Dynamite in Spanish. The Techichi is the most aggressive breed of dog known to man, and if they were the size of a Doberman Pinscher, they would be uncontrollable....she is a warrior Princess and is definitely La Jeffa..."The Boss". The Techichis will usually live longer than the Apple Heads as well

I am in my late 60's and have had chihuahuas since I was a child. When I was a little girl, the only chis around were the deer type. Appleheads were exceedingly rare. I think the AKC standards have ruined the breed. I currently own a healthy 5 pound deer type chi. Her veterinarian calls her a prototype chihuahua, meaning this is the way chihuahuas were before selective breeding resulted in dogs that meet the AKC standard. I almost wish the AKC would separate the two types. I much prefer the deer type and don't want it to go away. By the way, when I got my current deer type chi, she did have a molera, but thankfully, it closed.

Thank you for explaining the differences in Chihuahua's. I had an apple head and she was the sweetest little thing. Her name was Cricket because she was black and she would jump through the grass because she was so little. She passed away in my arms and it been almost 6 years now. I still miss her so much. She was like my little baby.

I love my deer head Chihuahua, she was a rescue and her name is Gracie. She's the most loving, loyal animal companion I've ever had. She's curled up next to me under a blanket rn.

Mine is a "deer head". I love my little pup. Don't care what AKC says. She's a pure breed.

Had 2 of them Deer head ones greatest dogs I've ever had. Had them for 13 years. Had to put one down 11/30/18 and the other 12/31/18. and 5 months later I'm still not over the emptiness of not having them around. There is nothing that compares to the unconditional love and devotion a Chihuahua gives you. Miss them every day

One of mine is from a shelter. I'm a big man, and they were shocked when I said that this guy is coming with me. Charlie boy the Crumb Bum.

We need to make the deer head more acceptable and allow for an upper weight limit of 10 lbs! It would be better for the dogs and their health.

I'm really not sure of the process these kennel clubs go through to create their breed standards. But does it really matter? If you love your little puppers, and she loves you back, who cares, really. They just want to be loved and we want to love them back, and take care of them.

Sweetie Pie Pets I'm not going to pay a breeder for a sick dog. You shouldn't either. The only way I would accept a dog with congenital defects is if it were free and from a rescue. My friend has a rescue chihuahua, she's a neat little funny thing.

I’ve had five Chihuahuas since 1987 best breed of dogs I’ve ever owned, my father when I was growing up bred German Shepherd‘s and Doberman pincer‘s for local police departments as K-9 dogs, But when I got older I fell in love with the Chihuahuas they are such a gentle breed if you teach them Correctly anyway, My friends tell me Mike you’re 6’ 7” & 350 lbs. why do you have such a small dog, and I tell him all the same thing I just love the Chihuahua breed of dogs...!!!

I have a deer head chi my daughter has an apple head chi. I think the deer head is cuter. But do find both adorable! Both should be standard, and weight limits vary within a dog being healthy so a 10 lb chi is overweight I would have to assume. They come in various weights but 6 maybe 7 lbs is pushing it for a true chihuahua.

I have a rescue larger (by breed standards) deer head chihuahua- she is whip smart and extremely well trained. I also own a rescue apple head chi who is very sensitive and easily triggered. She is very defensive and growls whenever she feels threatened. They are so different from each other and require varied management but I love them both. I was a large-breed lover until I met my first chi. Now, I love both large and tiny breeds (and anything in between).

I LOVE my little apple heads!!! Never had a deer head, but I would be happy to have one of those as well.!

Apple heads are cuter but dear heads are nicer

Lots of comments here from no knowledge. I have an apple headed chihuahua, akc/breed standard, 5.5 pounds her entire life until she got the COVID gain, now 6 pounds...lol. Very healthy girl, turning 12 soon. Always been active, loves indoors and outdoors, walks, the woods, all the typical dog things. Just got a new applehead baby for chi #2. Love the breed...intelligent, loyal, spunky and robust, and are sweet and loving with people when socialized. Our chi girl is loved by many and baby chi #2 will be the same. :)

I've had many chis' , they're my favorite breed dog. I feel in love with them when our great grandmother got a teacup chi.

karen eitel so funny how that works. I fell in love wirh the breed when our neighbors had one and it would walk down the street and visit me. He was the cutest little thing and I knew them I had to have one. And now like you, I’ve had many 🥰 Do you have a chi now?

It’s really important for chihuahua owners not to baby them otherwise it encourages aggressive behavior. Avoid confrontations with other dogs, but when it happens, let your chihuahua feel confident and not that you have to fight for him/her. Also, keeping a calm environment at home helps. I have an applehead who is very calm,sweet and friendly to people and other animals.

I love my little Cheeky Chi. He is the best support dog I have ever had and he has the most beautiful head face and personality. He just loves every body, and the Boston Terrior and rescued cat we have. Chis are the best! No matter what type of head that they have.

I have a beautiful apple head Chihuahua named Lucy. She is white all over and her ears only are light brown. It looks like pigtails lol. She is only slightly taller than a can of soda and is 8years old. I love my Lucy! She is also my service dog and take her everywhere. Chi's are,I believed not given enough credit for their loyalty,bravery,24/7 attention and care they give to thier owners. They have the very biggest hearts and are wonderful constant companions. I am actually not an animal person. I was raised in the country where you didn't get too attached to animals and the animals are usually quite large. But this one! She fills my ❤️

@@ceolaballard4646 He was one of mine that I bred (I'm a breeder in Southern California). If you're looking to get one for yourself, I recommend a website called puppyfind.com. You can search by breed and by state to see if there are any local breeders in your area. I recommend meeting with the breeder before paying any money because there are so many scammers out there. You want to make sure you see the puppy first before you make your choice. If you cant find any local breeders, many will ship their puppies, but that's a tricky thing too. You're not sure if the seller is a scammer so I recommend you require them to send you a video with your puppy in the video and them stating your name and the date in the video. Scammers often steal photos of puppies from real breeders and pretend they have that puppy to sell. They collect your money and never call you again. Just be careful and make sure you buy from a reputable breeder. Happy sweetie pie search!

I’ve got a bratty Chipoo puppy that appears to have some Applehead in her given her facial features and large rounded skull. She’s the love of my life considering I’m kind of an introvert and I prefer to spend time with my pets and close friends and family as opposed to socializing out in public with strangers. ☺️

How about let the chihuahua be a chihuahua without mixing it with other kind of dogs, the authentic Mexican chihuahua is perfect the way it is, now they making them smaller and different head shape!! And his size bother the judges or is not acceptable? So the one that are on competitions(apple head and super tiny) are not a real chihuahua mmmm 🤔🤔🤔🤔

I’m not sure how the judges decide what a real chihuahua is and who wins, etc. The super tiny ones aren’t generally the winners though. Standard sized chihuahuas go up to 6 pounds. Many people want “teacups” which isn’t even a breed, it’s just a made up word to distinguish between a standard sized chihuahua and a smaller one. But like I said, it’s generally standard sized chihuahuas who enter and win competitions. I think it’s more the general public who pushes for teacups and I agree with you they shouldn’t. Tinies are much more fragile than standard sized chis. I get about 5 inquiries a week asking for a teacup and only about 1 a month looking for a standard sized. I do my best to educate when I do get those inquiries but most people dismiss the warnings and continue their search for a tiny.

That doesn't really apply since the chihuahua is a breed of dog created by man using selective breeding programs. There is no chihuahua in nature. The AKC should strive for a distinct yet healthy animal.

As a senior I no longer can take in young pets, but I do have 2 senior cats and a 4yr old chi-terrier mix. I couldn't live happily without them. I have a Deer head chi named Jack and he’s the sweetest boy ever! He has longer legs and bigger ears than most chihuahuas. People are quick to call him a rat dog until they get to know him, and then they fall in love with his personality. Love my chi.

We just lost our ( deer head ) Lady at 13 yrs in March. We miss her so very much. Can't seem to find another one. Animal shelters are shut down here in Fl because of covid. All they have through Pet stores are apple heads. We will never be able to replace her. The breeder we got her from is out of business, so I really don't know where to look.

Norman Rambo Thank you. I truly know how you feel, my grandmother lost her dog five months ago and it’s been really hard for her. So I always bring my baby Chihuahua to her whenever she needs a bit of dog company, it always helps her a lot. I sincerely wish you the best, and I hope you can find one.

My Wife, Niece (she lives with us), and I have a total of 4 Chihuahuas. 3 are apple headed and 1 in dear headed. We do not breed or show. We also spay and neuter. These babies are family members and are treated as such. 2 are long coated, and 2 are short coated. My little girl just turned 14, our Niece's is 11, my Wife's is 10 and our latest baby is 5 months and seems to have bonded with our Niece....so I guess that makes her our Niece's.... A couple of months ago, our "old man" crossed the "rainbow bridge" at 19 years old. He was the entire family's baby. He was a dear head....we don't care what shape any of thier heads are. We love them all dearly...like I said, they're family...3 sleep in the bed with my Wife and me, the 4th sleeps in our Niece's bed. No floor for these kids!

I'm learning so much from your videos & never in my life would I have believed I be looking up anything about a Chi, lol. Even my granddaughter asked me today why I'm watching these videos because Ellen is a butthead, constant Barker, baby, but to me, she's perfect and I never hear her bark, unless someone is at the door or comes around the babies. Anywho, I do know she has a medium size soft spot & I was always concerned about it, but now I won't be worried that something is wrong with her. Thanks

We have a short haired deer head chihuahua named Fiesty. The breeder we got her from (age 4 months then) was very informative with the breed as I asked tons of questions. Fiesty was named by her grandkids lol and oh boy does she live up to her name when she is excited! Yet she is the most tamed, well tempered chih I've ever met. She's 4 now and I love having her in my lap or laying in bed with me. She's so good with our 8 year old son, they are both crazy beans xD she is the reason I started liking smaller breeds.

Awe, Feisty sounds amazing!!! Enough to make anyone fall in love with Chihuahuas. My first Chihuahua love story happened about 21 years ago and my live has forever changed. ❤️I'm so glad you got a wonderful sweetie pie from what sounds like a wonderful breeder.

I have two deer head Wawas. There mother was an apple head, but they took after their sire.

I love Chihuahuas. My favorite breed of dog.

Sweetie Pie Pets Thank you 🙏 I just lost my Chihuahua Brandy 🐶 back in the end of November. She was 13 years old. Applehead Chihuahua. She would chase Rottweilers and German Shepherd’s around. She was the ultimate killer dog. She got all her traits from her mom. RIP Brandy aka- Brandora. 2006 to 2019

George Harley Rider I’m so sorry for your loss. I had to say goodbye to my 14 year old Tina just before Christmas. So, so very difficult 😢 They are such a special breed of dogs 😍

@@pam8313 Ias much as I want to I am too young recently my mom and I tried to get my father to let us buy a big dog so the chances of getting a small dog in the future are slim to none thank you for the offer though 🤩

I have both. They are pretty much the same, but I used to breed them and I can tell you that the deer heads are way easier to potty train, at least imo.

Free The Androids thanks for your input. Very interesting. I haven’t noticed a correlation between potty training and skull shape as much as just some dogs seem to get it quicker than others but it has always seemed random to me. Thanks again for your input. 👍🏻🐶

I have two Applehead rescues and they're the sweetest little dogs. My female is a little chunky and my little boy is a skeleton but they both have HUGE eyes.

My dog is half and half. Her Sire was apple headed and her Dame was deer headed. So she has a bit of a deer headed snout but the head is rounder like an apple. So freaking cute.
