Apple AirPort Router Wireless Range Extending
Now that we have the AirPort Extreme router setup and working, let's extend the network wirelessly and make a larger more robust network! This could be done with any of Apple's routers, including the Time Machines.

Thank you for posting this! It's still helping people after nearly eight years. I installed a new backup home generator and I wanted to use the generators iPhone app to monitor and control it remotely. But my WiFi signal didn't quite make it outside the house to where the generator is installed. Fortunately I never throw old electronics out. I still had an older model Airport Extreme sitting around. I wondered if I could use it as a wireless WiFi extender. All the instruction that I came across online seemed to expect that I'd be running an ethernet cable between my primary router and the one I wanted to use as an extender. That would not be a practical solution. Fortunately a search on KZread led me to your channel. Fantastic! It works just perfectly for my purpose. The only problem I had at the start was is that my AirPort utility would not see the second AirPort Extreme. So I did a factory reset and then everything worked just as you described.
Got a refurbished Apple Airport Extreme and followed the video directions on my iPhone. Worked without a hitch. Thanks.
THIS WAS EXCELLENT...Thank You! I have been messing around trying to figure out how to do this via the Airport Utility on my iMac for a couple of hours. The result was that one or the other would work but not both at the same time. In between losing my Internet connection and having it, I had your KZread post displaying in the background so I dragged the link to my desktop before restarting the computer - again. By now I had already disconnected and unplugged the 2nd Extreme to end the torture but while doing so, clicked on the link I'd captured and started watching your post. The phone was what caught my attention... maybe that would work better - I had that app on my phone too! Plugged the 2nd Extreme back into the wall and followed the post using the phone to configure them. It was like "whaaat" this is working! Everything went together just like in your video. It even displayed a red dot" after the configuration and I tapped on it to see what else it could be. It was a notification that there was a firmware update for the 2nd Extreme. After the phone downloaded the update it proceeded to update the router through the app and everything worked flawlessly. In five minutes I had both routers talking to each other, seamlessly . So, 125 minutes: 120 minutes of pure frustration, 4 minutes of hope and optimism, 1 minute of "I can't believe this worked after everything else, and that = DONE! Thank You! Thumbs Up!
Howdy from Oct 2020. Just snagged a pair of these for $50 from OfferUp. Excellent video on extending a wireless network wirelessly.
Very good! Just got my 2nd Extreme and followed your instructions. Easiest network task I've ever done. I think I need to get another while they're still available. Thank you.
Brilliant! I have decades of experience with these routers and I didn't know this.
Hey, watched your video and setup my extra Airport sitting in the closet as an extender of the 5G from my Apple airport downstairs. Your a lifesaver!

I have a non-Airport router and was gifted an Airport. Is there a way I can use it as a wifi extender without a first airport?
I'm not quite ready to bite the bullet and buy new, meshy-type products to extend my network some; so, I bought a couple of used AirPort Extremes. I will return my cable company's router (I've had shortly) and go back to just their modem and revert to the Apple system I had... just will have two more now to the two I have plus I still use my AirPort Express to a music receiver. My routers will be ethernet or hard-wired connected; I have the cabling so I might as well use it. Thanks for showing me that you make no big deal out of resetting a router. I will do the same when my two used ones show up; these two, 6th generations (model A1521 with AC) are newer than my other two -- the one is the Time Capsule, 5th generation version (model A1408) with the spinning hard drive and the other is the short version, 4th generation (A1354). These older ones seems to be just fine for what we do here; I have never had to do anything with them for the longest time.
I didn't get it at first because I didn't put it in factory setup. Then it was very easy to adjust. Great help thanks a lot
this was super clear. set it up in exactly 7 minutes!!!
Very very useful!!! You solved my life with this video! Easy and clear!
Thank you so much! I'd been puzzling over how to do this...solved!
Very good video. I want to know if the set up to extend using a cable is the same as you show in this video and I also want to know if the network works with the same password and with no need of choosing a different network while you move in your house.
This is awesome! Thanks! I never knew you could set these up from an iPhone and even though the airport utliity won't set up the older Airport Express, the phone's app did easily! thanks!
Can you extend another router than an Extreme router ?
I've followed the steps and setup my extreme as an extender to my time capsule. On my airport utility it has a green light. However, it does not come up in my wifi list for me to connect to it. Am I doing something wrong? Or does it just extend the same network and password?
Easy and well explained, great video, greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽.
Just used it today worked 100%
Is there a way to do it without Ethernet, taking a pre existing wifi signal and broadcasting it with different settings
Hi GeekSmart - Thanks for this video, but- can i do the same proccess with 3 units but i want to extand them as well as with network cable so the wifi maybe will be more solid..?
Nice video. Thanks. What’s the difference if I wanted to use a smaller Express than another Extreme?
Thank you, you saved me a lot of time.
Exactly what I was looking for! There's not enough information out there about how to extend your 802.11ac network using another AirPort Extreme. The guy at Best Buy told me it was not possible, and sold me an AirPort Express. Imagine my dismay when I set it up and it won't extend 802.11ac (just b,g,a, and n). Kudos to this video and a download of iStumbler to help figure out why my wifi upstairs was so crappy! I'm actually using a Time Capsule, but I would imagine it would work the same as an AirPort Extreme? Liked and subbed.

The solid line means that there is a cable connection between the two. The dashed line means that the connection is through WiFi. Would you have an UTP cable between the two Airports the line would become solid as well. Hope that helps
can you do the same thing with a different router, let's say from asus? asus primary and apple extender?

Thank you.
Ok, here's how to make it a home run. Stand next to your main router/extreme and use your iphone to determine internet speed using wifi. Then go to your second r/e and repeat the speed test. go to the furthest point in your house and do another speed test. let us know your results. thanks.
Using airport extremes will give you a full 802.11ac deployment, airport expresses only do 802.11n. I've been doing this for 6 years with an Airport Extreme and two Airport Expresses. It's really an under sold feature of the Apple wifi line. Too bad it's being discontinued. The Airport Extreme rates as one of the best routers for both range and speed. I'd still suggest picking up a refurbished extreme for $120 and a couple refurbished expresses $50/each and build a solid 802.11n mesh network. or do two extremes if you want that full 802.11ac network.

This is hilarious, 5 years later and with my serious lack of knowledge I’ve networked my entire 1,176sqm block of land (including 5 bedroom house and huge shed) with 3 Airport Extremes hardwired to each other and my NBN. I did have them piggy backing off each other wirelessly and got wireless everywhere when the experts said it couldn’t be done but hardwired them for consistency of connection between house and shed in bad weather. The only issue I have is the security protocols are out of date so when I’m financial I’ll have to get a decent router/modem thing to sit between the NBN box and the first AirPort Extreme. I also really wish Apple still did these things, they’re fantastic and specially for those of us willing to admit we’ve no idea and need our hands held. 😂

@@dhpuls Good afternoon I hope this message finds you well. You cannot connect the Motorola router wirelessly to the airport extreme. BUT You can connect one of the airport extremes to the router and then set the second extreme wirelessly through the AirPort Utility app.
Worked like a charm?
I want to wirelessly extend my network to the guesthouse. So I am trying to connect an Apple airport extreme time capsule 802.11n WIRELESSLY to a NetGear R6300 AC1750 Dual band router supplied by Cox Cable (ISP). The Apple Airport Utility software doesn't recognize the NetGear router as wired router connected to my fiber optic internet modem. So, it keeps trying to make the time capsule as the primary router. I know it would be easier to simply buy an Airport Extreme 802.11ac and connect as shown in the video, but they are pricey. I tried to configure the Time Capsule MAC address using the NetGear genie software, but I an not an IT professional, so it's pretty greek. Any advice?

I have 2 of these devices 1 is hardwired to my main network. The second is currently connected wirelessly to the 1st exactly like the video. However the speeds are very poor off of the 2nd one, i have a lan connection available next to the 2nd unit. My question is: Can i have both of these units connected via Lan connection? Doesn't seem to want to work for me.
This dude is so hyped about his wifi he's literally out of breath! lol... just imagine when he finds out mesh wifi!!! haha
What happens if you change your WiFi password and the extension disconnects? How do you reconnect it to the network as it was before?
Great explanation. Thanks!
after connecting my extender to the main network, the wifi settings are not displaying the extender's name in the available networks. i have an airport extreme connected to the network and it is extended with an airport express. should i connect to the airport express or the airport extreme? if i will have to connect to the express, it is not seen on the available wifi networks. please help. thanks
Do the LAN ports work on the one connected wirelessly? For example, can I put the second one in a bedroom and use it to connect wired to my SMART TV?
Great Video! If you want to extend, do the 2 routers need to be the same? I tried one Airport Extreme N and the NEW AC Airport extreme , Airport Util didnt find the AC router ? TIA
Good video. I watched just to make sure I set up the new AirPort Extreme correctly. I have the newest model upstairs and the older non 5ghz AC model as a repeater downstairs. The 5ghz just isn’t penetrating the lower floors and I’m trying to free up how many items are on the 2.4ghz band.
So, Can I ethernet just one Apple airport extreme from to main cable modem at my pc into my bedroom at the back of the house or even out the window from my bedroom into the back yard to extend my range to my back yard? I have an old Apple Airport extreme and found out tonight that my wifi does not reach to my back yard. I would just put the Apple Wifi extreme back inside my window when I was done so it does not get screwed up from the elements.
Does this hand off wireless from one to another? Like repeaters or do they connect differently with different passwords? I’m looking to set up my AirPort Extreme and time capsule to cover all my house with easy use for family members
Thank you for the video. I have a time capsule and airport express. The airport is hard wired to the modem while express is set up as to extender through the wifi. I tried a couple of times to hardwire the time capsule with the airport express but without success. Do you by any chance have a video that describes this network setup? Many thanks
Hi! Currently I’m having this setup: main router - 5ghz only output, and range extender - 5ghz input and 2ghz only output (for smart home devices only +iPhone). I consider buying AirPort Time Capsule as the main router, and AirPort Extreme as the extender. The question is if I will be able to use this exact input/output with AirPort setup? Many thanks!
Can you extend a network wirelessly using a AirPort Time Capsule 802.11ac if the main Router is not Apple? The options that AirPort Utility give me in this scenario are: 1) Create a New Network 2) Add ro an Existing Network 3) Replace an Existing,Network 4) Restore Previous Settings If this is possible, can you make a video of it?

I picked up a second airport extreme today, and though I was a little apprehensive about the set up, but it could not have been easier. So with this method, I don't have to reconnect anything right? All I am doing is giving my home a bigger/better signal so to speak. I recently added 2 Nest cameras, and one kept dropping out. I'm hoping this solves this issue. So will my cameras connect to this, and should I see them on this extreme, or will the still be on the extreme connected to my router?

Can I use my AirPort Extreme router to extend my network from a non Apple router?
@oneeyedrone4293

no that is not possible, at least not through the app. There are some other utilities that modify netgear routers to allow repeating. You would need to use an ethernet cable between the routers and then yes your airport extreme could extended the original router signal, but only wire connection between the routers. That method works on any router system.
Nice, I just wanted to make sure that you didn't connect the second router to the modem?
