Why I'm going BACK to Airport Extreme (D-Link Makes Garbage!)

Ғылым және технология

What's up gang!?! I bought a Dlink router just over a year ago and it was just a miserable experience from the get go. Alas, it seemed like it had finally failed for forever and a Dlink didn't want to talk to me about it at all.
Can you imagine selling a product and only offering support to people who bought theirs within three months, then nothing to the rest? Shocking stuff! Haha. I am cheesed, here is my complaint. Thanks for listening to me whine!

Your experience is why I believe Apple made a mistake in dropping network devices. The Airport Extreme wasn't inexpensive making it difficult to continue when cheap (cost and operability) WiFi routers flooded the market. Apple was probably losing money on the Airport but everyone who's used one knows how easy it is to configure and use. As we all know, they just work! I've seen other youtube channels pushing Apple to get back into the router business. They kind of are when you look at some of their Home products like the HomePod and AppleTV. Apple has the beginning of a mesh system, only needing one device that could act as the main router (the one connected to the fiber/cable/satellite/not-DSL modem). If done properly, this base station router could be the size of an AppleTV, or built into an AppleTV, using HomePods as nodes, then figure out a way to add the necessary mesh hardware into laptops and desktops, further extending the network. I like wired networks for their speed but addressing mobile devices means you need WiFi. What would it take for Apple to alter the WiFi transceiver in an iMac to provide mesh services? Just software? The iMac's WiFi can transmit and receive at the same time it uses its hardwired ethernet connection. Maybe Apple is already designing a mesh network system that simply uses Apple hardware of all kinds to provide LAN services. All that's needed is a high-speed main router connection. I took apart an older Airport Extreme my brother had messed up and there's not much electronics in the tall cube. There's room for a 3-1/2" HDD (for Time Machine backup) along with an empty area opposite the motherboard.

I liked the idea of the centralized home unit before they existed and now I find myself less interested in buying one lol. Apple TV has decent functionality in that way, but I would love to see a dedicated router produced again, especially for small businesses who might not need TV or voice recognition built into their device.

I too am using the Airport Extremes, now in 2024! I have four total, three are set up as extenders. My first Extreme was bought new, the others all came from garage or estate sales. I have the extenders placed all over the house and they’re all connected to my network with wired Ethernet. I’ve got AT&T Fiber at $54/month and Speedtest shows I’m getting 310 Mbps down and 314 Mbps up in my iPad Pro 12. (Gotta love AT&T’s fiber which is symmetrical!) My Extremes are rock-solid and rarely, if ever, do I have to reboot them. I worry that I’m using older technology for my routers, but someone advised me that stability can be worth more than speed. With three extenders in this house (which is a bit of overkill) I certainly don’t have any weak zones for my Wyze cameras, home automation devices, etc. I too wish Apple would return to the Router market.

been using an Airport Extreme for over 8 years now. it has 100% pass-through 1Gbps speed (if that's the right term) and backs up selected iMacs on our network. will be replacing the hdd today in it to keep it going for another 8 years with reliable speed and backups. UPDATE: Got an 8TB Seagate Barracuda to do the swap / refresh on the hard drive, because a month or so ago, I started noticing incomplete backups to it, and then I got the occasional flashing amber light on the Airport Extreme. Had to power cycle to get rid of it, but then I did a disk util scan and it showed a red-x fail. So, I decided to replace the hard drive. The replacement went just fine (don't break the little connectors!). I share this to encourage everyone to replace the hard drives as soon as you get these recycled units (after you snoop around on the existing drive to see what was there! hah!!!). The Airport Extreme's are bulletproof!

(Also the web interface is hidden and you could be mistaken you could only configure it via the app) So I I flashed openwrt (on this router you just flash it like a normal update) and it's just the best router I ever had. It's been months on without any drops, except 1 rn because it's funny I guess, looked at the logs (because you can do that on openwrt) and it was the ISP modem+router+ap combo fault.

Man, i'm paying $30 American a month for 1 Gig FIber. Those DLink and other brands make some FUGLY routers. Until recently, I was still using an older first generation Apple Time Capsule, the flat one that is kinda shaped like an old Apple TV or Mac Mini. Then it started dropping the 5Ghz signal every so often and I would have to reset it. I looked up to see if there were any repair options, and then saw I could get a newer Airport Extreme for like $20-30 on eBay. I skipped getting the newer Time Capsule since I never really used it. With the old Time Capsule, I would only get around 200 Mbps, even on the 5 Ghz band, only around 60 Mbps on the 2.4 Ghz band. Now with the newer Airport Extreme, I get around 200 Mbps on the 2.4 Ghz band, and around 600 Mbps on the 5 Ghz band. I was so impressed with how much faster the newer router was, I ended up getting a second Airport Extreme. The Airport Utility app makes it so simple to create a mesh network too.

In all honesty, I have to upgrade to a newer piece of hardware soon as the speed issues were Dlink-side, not ISP-side. I hate all the pineapple designs and really wish Apple sold new gigabit+ routers! My wired connection on the Airport right now is roughly 300-350 mbps.

@@CanadianComputerCollector yeah, for now these last Airport Extremes get the job done. Wired, I get the full 1Gbps with the Airport, so I'm a happy camper. That's weird, you should be getting your full speed while using a wired connection. Make sure you're using a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable. I was previously using a Cat 5 cable and it was limiting my max speeds wired.

Yeah, Apple projects just work. I have used Airport Extremes and Expresses since they came out. Always work fine, also when travelling in hotels in the old days before wifi was every where. I must say that I have also had good experience with Huawei mifi routers, but that is a bit different. NOW, we are moving from fibernet internet connection to a 5g internet with a Huawei router. Have tested it, and seems stable. And it is wildly fast. So, I am decommissioning my Airport Extreme, aiming to use it in Bridge Mode to provide access to an external shared drive (music files). I hope that works. Good video. We should all trash trash products so that they stop being bought and stop being made.

I still love mine, though the restrictions on Ethernet are legit. Perhaps create a chain of Apple routers? Adding one more slot each time you add another Airport. I’m kidding don’t do that. I’d have to Google some solutions as I haven’t had an issue as of yet. That said, this router lives at the studio and isn’t technically daily driven anymore. It’s connected 24/7 but we are using the Ethernet only to test builds and run updates.

I had a similar problem (sort of) with my wireless connection. After my kids were hounding me of how slow the internet was and how the modem kept dropping out (connect disconnect, switch off then on again), I decided to change from one service provider to another. I'd thought I would upgrade the modem so the new provider gave me a Netcomm [blah blah] and it turned out to be worse. The tech support guy from the new provider was really helpful in trying to resolve my issue. After disconnecting every wireless device in the household and only having my MacBook Pro just 1 metre away from the wireless modem, it was still slow. So 3.5hrs later the tech support guy could not work out the issue. So the problem was the modem - the tech support guy later stated that it can only handle 16 wireless devices. No one told me this when I signed up, so I sent back the Netcomm [blah blah piece of crap] for a refund and I reconnected the old modem Saecom [blah blah less piece of crap] and it was better. The problem still is this - a lot of these cheap modems only connect 16 wireless devices at the one time ie: they can only supply 16 IP address. So 5 people in the household x2 devices each (phone and one computer) + son's girlfriend (1 phone and sometimes laptop) + 2x Mac Minis + 2x Apple TVs + 3x my laptops (1 in bedroom, 1 in lounge room, 1 random somewhere) + 2x Android TVs + iMac for video editing + wife's work HP = 23 wireless devices! And this does not include all the other wireless iPhone/iPad/computers that I connect to test around the house. Since this dilemma a year ago, I have had 2x sons move out (plus girlfriend) and I have ethernet cabling running through the house now, so this has resolved most of the issues. I may look at a mesh system soon...

Easy, just work, no issues for power users including gaming on all systems. Absolutely despise all the others made today. Mesh blah......even tried those. Terrible user experience. I am not an IT person, but as a work from home high bandwidth user I need reliable network coverage. both wifi and wired. Have wired throughout the house too. All plays nice. D-link has always been shit, it's Netgear or Asus only! I'm not kidding I install home wifi, and Netgear Orbi is by far the best mesh router systems, even if the price is eye-watering! You will have complete coverage with full speeds all the way out to the distance limit, hell many of my customers report being connected to their network inside their neighbor's home next door. Ubiquity is a joke unless you run a business and have advanced networking requirements. Go with Asus routers if you want a single access point (apartments) or are a gamer where every millisecond counts. TP-Link will suffice if you're on a budget. Also wireless N vs 6E, really, N is up to 900Mbps while I can buy a 6E Orbi that has a throughput of 10.8Gbps or about 12x fast and at least 4x further! Make sure not to rent your modem either the Netgear CM2000 (no phone) or CM2050v (home phone) they pay for themselves in about 2 years (after that it helps pay for the WiFi system!), are faster, better quality, and prevent a lot of statistical data on your browsing from your ISP.

D-Link products are bullshit! When I was looking for a router, all sellers recommended D-link to me, and I ask, is it better than TP-link? - they answered: "Yes! Of course! Are you still asking?" and I relied on it.. and I endured all the troubles that happened with this damn router for a year... until I changed it.. I am an ordinary user, without special needs... Most of my friends and acquaintances had ordinary and inexpensive TP-link routers and they worked smoothly and without problems from the moment of their first configuration.. So, friends, if you are reading this, do not be fooled what they can tell you in stores... do your own research and look for users of the products you want to buy and ask their honest opinion. And D-link products it's a crap!
