Apple AirPort Extreme Network Extending

I have recently purchased 3 Apple AirPort Extremes to use to build my wireless network out without any dead zones in my house. After some bad luck with a previous router, I have had nothing but an excellent experience with the Apple AirPort routers! Enjoy!

Thanks for creating this very helpful video! It was very easy to follow the instructions. I used to get bad signal in my bedroom. I had an old Airport Express that I was not using, and after watching this video I connected that to the Airport Extreme, and it worked beautifully. Now the signal is so much better in my bedroom. Thanks again!

I know this is a really old video, but you just helped me tremendously! Thank you for posting this. I have a detached studio on my property and I've tried wirelessly extending my second airport extreme from the main house with pretty bad results and significantly reduced speeds. I bought a Cat6 outdoor cable and ran it from the main Airport Extreme to the studio one, reset it, and now I have EXCELLENT connection! Thank you again!

This is AWESOME. I upgraded to a new Extreme 6 months ago and no matter what I did to follow Apple's instructions, it would never see my old unit which I wanted to use to extend my network. So I gave up. Found this video this am and had it working in minutes. THANK YOU!

I just resently add a second Apple router as an wifi extender and it was ridiculously easy. I no longer have any Wi-Fi dead spots. The only thing I did differently was the second one I used as an extender I used the same network name and password and after doing that I had no connection issue with any of my devises.

Convenience was the primary factor in my choice to go with Apple over other routers. The hardest part of the setup was taking it out of the box! I really do appreciate the way Apple makes their products so simple and easy to understand. I live in a 3 bedroom, 3 floor townhouse and the AirPort Extreme manages to cover nearly every sq.inch with an excellent signal. My garage seems to have the weakest reception out of all areas tested and I spend a lot of time there so I may consider extending my network in the future. Thanks for the video.

Bought an express five years ago and it has been 100% troublefree. I tried netgear and belkin before that and got tired of all the issues, daily reboots, etc. Apple makes the best routers known to me! I just ordered an extreme to use as my basestation and the express I will use as an extender. I’ll try wireless first then maybe hardwire it later if needed. I guess they stopped making routers maybe because they kind of hit a ceiling, there is no need for anything better than an extreme. It’ll likely be ten years before anyone will need anything better.great video!

These videos are packed with information - sometimes seems slow, but when I need the detail, it's all there. These are a lot more useful than the Apple websites, which seem strangely out of date and unhelpful on this subject. And it's great to see you having fun with technology. Thank you. One thing that I found particularly difficult was using the Airport Utility on the Mac. It's got a lot of options and I didn't know where to start when setting up a new wireless base station. This video was great, because the set up on the iPhone is easy. It would be great to see this done on the Mac as well.

I was extending my even more aged network with a used Airport Extreme as the WIFI in my bedroom is too slow. I knew it was easy with Apple but you have given me the support I need. As someone else has said the Apple information is not as helpful or as easily understood.

Hi, same case here. My IP is awful, so I decided to install a TP-Link Archer MR600 4G Modem + Wireless Router Dual Band AC1200 and let it be my main wifi router and move ATC to the basement to keep its TimeMachine function over wired LAN and serve as a wifi range extender there instead of being a wifi router. I wonder if it can become a range extender as easily as it do with an Apple main router?

I have an AirPort Extreme (6th generation)as my main router. I wanted to extend my network as I have a weak spot in my bedroom. I purchased an older AirPort Extreme (2nd generation) and tried extending. It appeared to work at first, but now it seems to drop a lot. My question is, is it not ideal since they are both different generations? According to some research it appears the older version can do either 5Gh or 2.4GH, but not dual. I assume it’s ideal to have the same generation Apple routers talking to each other? Any thoughts? I know sadly Apple is out of the router business now. Thanks!

+techgooch I setup my network in a very similar manner, however, I used my imac to setup the routers themselves. My problem is that my wifi devices do not switch routers (WAP) as a move from room to room to pick up the best signal. I need to cycle the wifi off on my device to connect to the best router for that location. Does yours work the same or is there something that I need to adjust on mine to allow for the automatic switch to the best possible WAP? TIA.

Using the AirPort Extreme as a repeater won't work well because they are too far from each other I get only 40 Mbps at best (I usually get 500 Mbps downstairs). Can't I just connect the AirPort Extreme on the second floor through Ethernet to my modem just like my Time Capsule so that I can connect to the same Wi-Fi network with even speeds through my house?

Thanks for the video. Setting up was pretty easy. I picked up 2 of these and maybe a 3rd though I dont think I need the 3rd. Im with you on using LAN cables over WiFi when possible. 75% of my devices are by cable. Heck even fire stick had a LAN adapter. These Airport extremes can be picked up on Ebay for 40$. Just have patience and dont overbid. These units beat out my Linksys EA6900 that's just a few year old and was starting to have many disconnects when Using PLEX media server. So far so good with the Airports. Most of my devices are apple and I think they play very nice together. Im happy not having to spend 300$ on a high end router. Im getting 220mps+ over the 5gxz band now. I was getting 120 before with the Linksys router. I think I paid close to 200$ for the Linksys

Or the device will understand and switch to the stronger router? I have a weak signal in the kitchen and want to reforce it. But I´m afraid it don´t give up the weakness signal.

Hello. Thanks for the info. Very helpful. I want to reconfigure/setup my wireless network. Current configuration works but I am not using all the tools/hardware I have available for maximum benefit, I have multiple dead spots, and am not leveraging network hard drive/backup sharing, printer sharing, etc. So want to start over and setup properly. In past this was done by pros way back when with other gear/ISPs and modems, etc. Been maintaining and getting to work myself but think I am making it harder than it should be after watching you video! I have never seen a apple extreme or express setup outside of Airport Utility! I use the utility and go in and configure manually and seeing how you did it was MUCH easier, but my issues might be I am mostly windows. I have a Comcast High Speed internet and modem (not wireless), 1 newer Apple Extreme Tower, 2 older apple extremes (1 model before tower, then an older 1), multiple Airport Expresses, Windows 10 Desktop, Windows 10 on Surface Book, Android phone, Apple iPad2 (old version, 2nd model I believe, 5+ yrs old?). I have ability to hardwire Extremes and/or expresses in different corners of my colonial. I have multiple separate sound systems in house so I use Expresses/Extremes to stream music from main desktop that houses 200GB of music on an external hard drive. I believe that should be a shared network drive for whole network but currently just attached to desktop. I am wondering if I should do that factory reset solution you showed in this video and start over, all way back to initial Extreme attached to modem and then setup all extenders USING the iPad and the auto setup you showed on your phone? Will that work on an older iPad? You didn't show setting up main Extreme attached to Modem, only Extenders, but if that can be setup like you showed on iPhone using my iPad, maybe starting over with everything to factory settings is worth a try? Appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. Sorry for long message but this has caused me lots of hours and think I am making it harder than it should be. Teenagers not happy with wireless network and giving me grief! Thanks!

Cable > Modem > MAIN Extreme > Extreme 1, and Extreme 2, 8-Port Gigabit Switch. Extreme 1 > PS4, and Apple TV. Extreme 2 > another Apple TV, and a printer? 8-Port Gigabit Switch > External Hard Drive 1, External Hard Drive 2, External Hard Drive 3, DVD player, Home Phone, and Computer? Time Capsule is linked via wifi. I'm assuming that: the other Extremes are on the 2.5 GHz wifi channels, the external Hard Drives are for video editing and or movies, the modem is the Arris Motorola Surfboard Modem, The Gigabit Switch is TP-Link or Netgear brand.

I tried this many times to extend my wifi with the time capsule 3TB - however always get an Unexpected Error. Ended up generate wifi with same SSID and than it finally worked. Don't understand why the wifi extention does not work

Did you experience that the internet speed is very very slow using the wirelessly extended airport extreme? Is that the reason why you are using wired extension?

Will it work the same way if your main router isn’t an Apple product but the extender is?

Just got one from AAFES for 50% off. Setting it up was a pain but then again, I have Japanese internet. It's so limited vs. other routers. I still don't know how to check the generation so I don't know how it compares on the AC chipset for speeds. I can say that one SSID is nice and verified that I am connected to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously. I also like the active cooling (fan on bottom) which most high end routers DO NOT have (such as my Asus RT-N66U). I wish it came with Win OS install instructions even if no disc is present. I imagine that is why it was returned as it seems the wiring was not unwrapped or black sticker on bottom.

I really like your video but I have a question: Are you SURE that "extending" your network in this manner is actually using your ethernet as the backhaul rather than the 2 Airports just talking to each other wirelessly? Looking at Apple's own documentation on the matter, is sounds like the only way to take advantage of utilizing the ethernet connection is to setup a "roaming network" (having each airport create it's own network, but setting the SSID's/password to be the same) - which is very different than extending the network: support.apple.com/en-us/HT202056 Based on what I'm reading, extending seems to be wireless only, and therefore subject to a huge performance decrease. (around 50%) I'd love to be proven wrong though...

Replying to my own question here as I actually tried this last night with an airport express: If the new airport express/extreme you're adding to your network is connected to ethernet (back to the base router), choosing to "Extend" your network will setup the new device as a "roaming" device. (a roaming network is one where additional access points are put in bridge mode, but use the same SSID/password as the main WiFi router. This will cause client devices to "hop" from one access point to another as you roam around the house. It's not nearly as slick as a true "mesh" style network (Eero, Luma, Ubiquiti, etc) but it does work reasonably well) Anyway, the fact that it's smart enough to do all the work for you is really cool. If you go back and look at the newly added device, you'll see that it's in bridge mode, and the wireless type is not "extend a wireless network", but rather "create a wireless network". Again, it did this because it noticed you had ethernet backhaul to the main router. Without that, the wireless type would have been setup as "extend a wireless network", which is OK but will have a big performance penalty. Thanks again for the great video.

    - The ethernet cable from your main Airport Extreme router to the roaming Extreme goes into the roaming's WAN port (circle) not the LAN (arrow). - Also, I was able to do this using the original flat white Extreme (10/100) as a wireless roaming station too.

Are all of your routers connected via wires to the modem? Say I want to set up a router downstairs in my basement, if my modem and setup is upstairs would I have to literally wire a cord all the way from my upstairs modem to my basement? Is that what you did with the different rooms and routers? Thanks great video!

Depends on how you set it up. If you do traditional connection, just out in password. If you do easy "push button" setup, you need to set it up through the AirPort Utility
