    This is a Router/Network storage device. It works with Time Machine in OSX and makes hourly back-ups to all connected devices over Wifi or through an ethernet cable. The idea is that you never have to remember to back-up your computer because it is done periodically throughout the day for you. It also functions as an external hard drive over Wifi so you can make copies of files or store large amounts of data (pics, music etc) and access them when you are connected to it. I have the older version for about 2 years, the 3TB version and it backs up all the Macs in the house.

    I had to replace my almost 8 year old 2nd generation Airport 80211n. This new one seems to be just as rock solid as the old one. The Plus is it doesn't get as hot as the old device did. I was always expecting the old one to overheat as hot as it got, but it never did. I really like Apple hardware as in many cases it's built like a tank, and just lasts.

    I've had an Airport Extreme for a few years now as a 2nd router / Wifi extender for my house as it's 2 stories and my very very top of the line routers from Asus, Netgear, Buffalo, etc - none will provide reliable connections for the whole house. So anywho the years I've upgraded my main router many times but kept the Airport Extreme in the same play downstairs, directly wired to work as another wifi station - and I must say, years later it's still fantastic. It's pretty much completely stable - I rarely have to touch it. Maybe once every 6 months if something seems a little flaky I'll reboot it, but it might even be less rare than that. My main upstairs routers generally have to rebooted quite a bit more often - but they're not bad either. The Airport Extreme, with no external antennas, is really impressive - it covers a very large area and the speeds on the thing are great. If I had a smaller place or if it was just one story an Airport Extreme would be a perfect solution. It's very easy to setup, which isn't a big deal to me but most people that's a big deal, and the speed and coverage compete with the latest $300 routers I have with 8 external antennas sticking out of it - although with the external antennas it does let you aim them - so I aim a few outside so I can get limited coverage in my yard.

    Rod Munch hey man whats the best Wi-Fi router for a 2 stories house ? not that expensive like this 300dollar can u please suggest some models ! thank you

  • @rodmunch69

    @rodmunch69

    7 жыл бұрын

    These are actually a pretty good solution and you can find them used for a fairly good price. Apple stuff tends to last a long time because it is expensive - but also well made. However, at least with my 2 story house a single router just doesn't cut it. Not sure how big your place is by my place is a pretty good size and I placed extra sound insulating material in the walls when I had it built and I think that really kills the signal since I rarely get as good a signal as most people claim. Anyways the cheapest solution, which might be the best solution, would be to get a mid-ranged router, something in the $100 range, then get a wifi extender - they run maybe $50 or so. You place your main router stairs if possible, then put your extender where you can plug it in where it still gets a good signal - that should give you coverage of almost everything. Most extenders just plug directly into the wall - they work wirelessly so you don't need to run cables or do anything - just plug it in, follow the directions and you're good to go. I will say don't go cheap on wifi or you'll drive yourself and whoever has to use it nuts with constantly rebooting it, dealing with signal drops, poor range, etc. In my experience you don't have to go top of the line with routers, but you don't ever want to go cheap. If you're really on a budget find a top router from like 2 or 3 years ago and then buy one used, they don't really keep their value all that much and a top of the line router from 2-3 years ago should easily outperform a newer cheap router, plus it should have stable firmware, etc. Just my suggestion - but I don't have any model numbers to give. But seriously this is a good dead simple choice, in particular if you have an iPhone or iPad since the apple app that works with it is very simple to use and this is by far the most stable router I've ever used, ever.

    This can be fully wireless if you already have a wireless system set up. Al you have to do is when you are setting this up choose other option an click add to existing network. It will search and display any available networks click on you existing wireless network and input your password to it. Once you have done this it will act as a range extender.

    Airport Extreme is a Wireless Router made by Apple. It is a 802.11 AC wireless router. The Time Capsule is the same Wireless Router but with a 2 or 3 terabyte HD installed as a network storage drive.

    The Airport Extreme and TIme Capsule will. The Airport Express on the other hand will only extend the network range for another Apple router only. If the initial router is not an Apple router then it only adds either wireless printing (if you have a usb printer hooked up to it) or AirPlay functionality (if you have something hooked up to the audio jack on it) to your wireless network.

    Buying a route is not like buying a phone, or a new computer. It takes a LONG time for your route to be out dated if it can't handle fast internet speeds, handle moderate gaming, or multiple devices then it's time to go otherwise there is no reason to get a new one.

  • @thecrazydoctor5764

    @thecrazydoctor5764

    Those "tools" that you mentioned are what these devices do. Unless I'm reading your question wrong, that's like asking "Why do I need that blue hammer when I already have this red hammer?" You don't. It's just for people who are looking into getting a new router, looking to expand the reach of their current router, and/or are looking for an external hard drive to back up their computers. If you already have things that do that, you're in good shape and can pretty much disregard this video.

    They're both wireless routers, for start. You plug your fiber, DSL, or cable modem into them and they create a Wi-Fi network. One of them also has a built-in hard drive, which allows you to store files on it. You can then access the files from any computer or device on your network. The hard drive also supports Time Machine, Apple's automatic backup software for Macs.

    It is a router of sorts, but a router is still required other than the Airport Extreme. So for example im with BT, my ADSL Connection comes in through the BT HomeHub 3.0 then via Ethernet connects to the Extreme's WAN port, and is in bridgemode to act as the networks hub and use it's wireless hardware.

    Are you talking about the mobile USB modems that you get from a wireless carrier, like Sprint or AT&T? To use the AirPort devices with Internet, you need an Ethernet cable running from your modem to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort. USB modems usually don't have an Ethernet output to allow that. There might be a way to do it with some tricks, but unfortunately I don't know enough about networking to have an answer.

    Dude I miss old good Airport Extreme 🥲

  • @Programmer7
    @Programmer711 жыл бұрын

    Nope. You take your modem and connect to via an Ethernet cable to the AirPort device, just like you would with any other router. Then, any device that supports a/b/g/n or ac Wi-Fi can connect to it. You probably don't have any devices that use ac Wi-Fi, though, so you won't be able to take advantage of its speed boost over 802.11n Wi-Fi. As long as your modem has an Ethernet output, you can connect to the AirPort.

    The express (that one that looks like a white AppleTV) only can use the USB port for printing. The Extreme however can, if you first plug in a USB hub, support harddrives AND printers. And yes, if you have plugged in a hard drive into the Airport (extreme) it basically works like a Time Capsule.

    Thank you SO much for your reply! I called apple with this very same question a few days ago and the apple 'genius' said that using Time Capsule as a range extender wouldn't work properly. It should to be connected to the modem with a wire so it could function as a new modem. He also added that the airport express was their only range extender, when I asked if TC isn't just an Airport Exprss with a harddriver he didn't know what to say anymore... Anyway, thank you for all your amazing videos!

    Any iOS device can set up the Airport Express/Extreme or TimeCapsule. So iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad (regular or Mini) will work. I think as long as it has iOS 6 or higher installed you're good

    I think I prefer the old form factor. I actually just bought 2 airport express and I absolutely love their form factor. They provide everything I need by way of connectivity in a smaller package than my old airport extreme.

    Was not sure about the Extreme even when I bought it. All I can say is just like all the other apple stuff Ive bought, its expensive, minimalistic...and bloody fantastic. It's sort out all my wifi issues and then some.

    Hi i have a question, i have both Macbook, iPad, and Iphone. If i buy a time capsule and set it up to back up my macbook, can you also backup iPhone and iPad to that capsule aswell? or do you first need to backup your iPhone to your mac, and then from mac to time capsule? Do you understand? I mean can i have both iOS and OS X? or do you need to choose?

    +thepowerlifter You can have as many Apple devices backing up to it, as long as there is free storage available on it. After all, it separates backups per device and you don't have to worry.

    Plus it would be slow because you are limited to the USB2 connection. The time capsule is sata connected so your transfer speeds will be A LOT faster as compared to USB2 speeds. It's a shame because they could've easily put in a USB3 interface...

    the Airport Express (the one shown at 5:48) is the only one that had/has an analog/optical audio jack in the back of it to be used to stream music to whatever you had hooked up to it aka AirPlay (not called AirTunes anymore after AirPlay was invented)

    He signed up for the Apple developer program. You pay about $100 a year and gain access to Apple's SDKs, APIs, and beta software (including iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks). The purpose is so developers can prepare their apps for the updated OSes ahead of time. Anyone can buy an Apple developer membership; you don't actually have to be a software developer.

    My current wifi setup is through ATT U-verse with a 2WIRE router. Should I set up a separate network that's independent of the 2WIRE wireless network for all my iOS devices (macbook pro, imac, ipads, iphones, apple tv, etc.)?

  • @Programmer7
    @Programmer711 жыл бұрын

    No, he purchased an Apple developer license ($100 per year). With an Apple developer membership, you can download the betas of both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. The purpose is so that software developers can get their apps ready for the releases ahead of time. You don't have to prove that you're a developer, though, so anyone can register. You just have to pay $100.

    Ok so I have all of my mac's backup on a portable, USB based buffalo mini station hard drive. This is my actual time machine drive. So if I buy this Apple Time Capsule, how will i be able to transfer all the back up on my buffalo drive to this time capsule? Please tell me! Also one more thing, does this time capsule add up to be a wi fi router too? Can i get rid of my existing router if i bought this product? Thanks

And since you didn't explain that in your video, I'm lost! I'm a rookie at all of this. So I need to unplug something from my router and into my Time Capsule? Help!
