Spoken Word by James Hetfield:
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or a dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me
Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, please God, help me, help me
Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell
Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

I love James narrating his lyrics instead of singing them. It makes it feel more personal like reading a letter that was written before he lost his limbs, hearing and sight by an explosion. But knowing that it’s just happening inside his head. It’s heavy

It's hard to fathom Apocalyptica's journey after this. From being called a cheap cover brand, to playing Wagner with orchestra and circus performances all the way to being the most respected cello-driven band collaborating with the band that started them. This is incredible. Hats off to you, men. Rock on! 🤘🤘

Metallica was never known as a cover band. When Metallica first started, they did do their own versions of covers but did not tell anyone they were performing covers and nobody knew any different and Metallica was never called or known as a "cover band". Also Apocalyptica may be a cover band of sorts, they were never know as a cheap cover band but a band that did fantastic reimagined covers of songs and made them their own.

Although people Commented they didn’t like James speaking instead of singing, that made this version special to me! It made it has its own flavor. If he had sang like he’s used to sing, it would be just another cover with James making it sound as the original version. The fact that he spoke the lyrics made me focused on the drama of the lyric itself instead of the vocal melody, making the song look as a movie. Awesome version!

There's a part of me that wishes James had actually sung on this, but it doesn't matter, not when you hear all the rest of it. Somehow he managed to ignore a vocal melody he's sung hundreds (if not thousands) of times, and make the delivery of each line meaningful. That takes tremendous work and effort. There are hints of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits in his voice. It sounds fantastic. The orchestration and every other decision made on this song make it new and original. Having a fresh take on a classic is no easy task, but this does it to perfection. It's almost more of a musical art piece than a song, and that's more than okay.

I dig it. They did their own thing with it and made it their own, including the choice to have James narrate the story instead of singing the lyrics. This just shows you how orchestrated Metallica's music is. James's and Lars's compositions are like classical music with beautiful melodies and layers. As a cello player myself, this is even more amazing. Kudos to all involved! (I would love to hear a version with James actually singing, though the spoken word is cool)

::takes a deep breath:: WHEW! That wasn't just a cover song, that wasn't just an EPIC music video, that wasn't even a symphonic metal MASTERPIECE. That, ladies and gentlemen, was an entire EXPERIENCE!!! Patric Ullaeus has completely surpassed himself as a film director and cinematographer. The juxtaposition of the majestically beautiful cellos and James Hetfield actually speaking the lyrics instead of growling them out was just completely HAUNTING! Having listened to this song literally THOUSANDS of times over the last 30 plus years or so, we have certain expectations when we start hearing those oh so familiar chords and notations playing. Even the eponymous S&M album from over 25 years ago, with it's overly bombastic and brutal orchestral version gave us yet another aspect to the song that we have grown to accept and cherish over the years. THIS, quite literally and simply, destroys EVERY expectation and preconception ONE might have about how this song should sound. Is it the definitive version? NO, we already have that one, and it's perfect in its own right. THIS is simply an offering and homage delivered with love, respect, passion and class. Tough, dirty, gritty, ugly, brutal. But, that's WAR folks. Everyone involved in this project came into it with a very clear picture of what they intended to achieve, and they completely surpassed them. THIS is one of those videos that's going to stick with you for a VERY long time. Apocalyptica has given us something we never even knew we needed, and now that we have it, we're NEVER letting it go.

I need to catch my breath again after seeing this epic song and video...now let me find the right words to express how I feel and it's going to be hard... This is a video and an interpretation that really touched my soul, it's moving and intense and a very different interpretation from your previous cover of ONE and yet equally beautiful. This new cover of yours reveals more the human side of war, the desperation linked to it, the images are strong and very fitting for the concept. And James Hetfield's narrating voice is really perfect, it gives a different touch. I'm so happy of the collaboration with James and Rob, this is a great collaboration project and once again Apocalyptica shows that after many years they can surprise us with something completely new. Sorry for being late, I missed the premiere this time but I will have this video and song on repeat today and not only today, of course! Thank you, Apocalyptica! ❤

Seriously though, I've been a fan since the late 90s (Inquisition Symphony was the album that i first heard) when you did metallica covers and it's amazing to see this release. You've all worked so freaking hard and keep doing more amazing things! Congrats on all of your success.
