R.I.P. Charlie LeSueur, you are remembered this day !

Charlie LeSuersur worked hard to bring the Superstitious Mountains to life. He assembled a great team of cowboys and historians who are carrying out the mission to its end. I enjoy the fact I learn more and more about this area from the locals who know the smallest detail about local history pluss you have walked the ground you are talking about. Thank you for all you do and keep up the great work. Like most shows when the founder moves on the show suffer in intensity but your work and efforts are as captivating as Charlie's was. I guess great minds think alike and yall are living proof of this fact. Keep the story's and facts coming some of us out here are listening. Howdy from Texas and again thank you. One thought for a show Charlie talked about how he was shot at at around the base of Superstitious Mountain proper there on the edge of Apache Junction. I always heard his comment and was just curious what he was doing and why some felt the need to shoot at him. I am glad they missed.

My father grew up in Superior. At least twice we hiked up to Apache leap to look around. We found US Cav horseshoes, and cartridge cases. We also found pottery shards and stone Arrowheads.

Weren't the vast majority of 50/70 rifles Allin conversion Springfield's prior to the Army adopting the 45/70? Using caps for primers was a slick idea. Necessity is the mother of invention. Another good piece of history. Thanks.

Hello. I was at the top yesterday via the shallow canyon that proceeds west from one of the dirt access roads near the Magma Rd. terminus. Thank you for clarifying this clearly embellished legend. If possible, would you direct me to a source for the archaeologist’s report which you cited. I’d love to read it. Regards.

It's always been my belief that Apache Leap was just a 'romantic' name that suited the unique cliffs. The story was made up to support the title. Sort of like so many cliffs being named Lover's Leap.

I have heard of Apache Leap for years and believed the Legend. But, now, I know the answer of the Legend being solved, great detective work! Being the World knows about the "tears" the Legend will love on about Indian suicide rather than the solved mystery.

It was a 56/50 not 56/56 but the reference I gave about Apaches reloading in the Dr Thorne search by Cooley had nothing to do with Apache Leap and no caliber was mentioned. It just showed that Apaches had the ability to reload unknown calibers of cartridges.

When I was young, in the early 70s I understood from reading about the Apache Tears,, (when I bought some,,,) is that they were from the Apache's that had been captured and had to walk the long journey on foot to the reservation,,, thus the March of Tears. The little black rocks sold are supposed to be the tears of the Apache...

Captian William McCleve, I believe is a relative of mine. My third great granfdather left Ireland in 1856, about the same time that William did. I have not been able to find any records to proof this. John joined the Mormon church in Ireland in 1850. William would never talk about his time in Ireland.

Really? Hmm, I don’t really believe that they committed suicide.. One well known event that happened in the past was that an Apache by the name of Fun was the first Apache to commit suicide after the imprisonment. Granted he was Chiricahua Apache but suicide was something all Apache bands didn’t do. Suicide was unheard of, until after the wars. From what I know when Fun passed, it shocked all the Apaches and was something they didn’t expect. He killed himself after drinking and abusing his wife, after he realized his actions he went out and shot himself.

My name is Karl mccleve. And I do believe I am related to William the can't prove it through any written documents. William was born in Ireland pretty close to the same time my third great-grandfather was born, John mcclave. I don't know what happened there with William that he would never talk to anybody about Ireland. He went on to be a very successful military officer and ended up retiring in California. If anyone has any information they could tell me about for William where he was born in Ireland Etc. My third or fourth great-grandfather John mccleve was born in ballymoney Northern Ireland. He was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints along with his whole family and wife. His wife is Nancy Jane McFerrin mccleve. They emigrated to America in 1856. They joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints II handcart company in Ohio that year. Unfortunately, John died about two days before they reach the Salt Lake Valley.

Spencer carbines were rimfire, you can make a priming compound and put back inside the rim and reload them.
