Antique Rusted Crosscut Saw Restoration
Ғылым және технология
I found this Saw in old garden during gathering firewood and took it home to restore, also it's known as Thwart Saw. The uniqueness of this restoration is that I restored steel part without sand paper, and used only my hands. I did my best to restore this beautiful Saw and make it perfect.
All the Restoration process is below:
This antique 2 man Crosscut Saw designed for cutting wood perpendicular to (across) the wood grain. They may be small or large, for fine work like woodworking or log bucking. At first Blade need to be sanded, it was very hard since to remove rust I used Pit sand. Grinding of metal lasted all day, that's the hardest sanding and rust removal ever done by me. It is made of spring steel and is very flexible.
Here is one tricky moment, to make it able to cut wood need to make saw tooth set with special pliers, this is necessary to avoid getting stuck in the wood during work, Rip and crosscut teeth are perfect at 60 degree angles. Also it was Sharpened with triangle file.
Beech wood is very good and durable and it is nice choice for Handle. I make it out of round blank, by using my angle grinder and Firm Lathe. Also it was soaked in Linseed oil polished and made a burned wood finish to reveal the texture.

Just sand for polishing!? Thats something new from you and i really like it👍 no grinder, metal brush or sandpaper wow! looks sharp...😁
Great job! The wet sand worked very well. Saw looks good. You forgot to joint the teeth but seems to cut pretty well. Take care 😃👍🏼
Found your channel when you followed me on Instagram. Nice video! I like the touches of humor that you put into the videos, and the idea of sanding it with actual sand is also great! I'll watch more of you when I get back home :D

I've got a 2-handled (bolt on) 6' bucking saw that I've been saving for when I feel like dealing with the heavy corrosion. It doesn't appear to have ever been used! Now, thanks to your video, I have a much better idea of what I need to do. Tyanks!
simple yet very beautiful job! Loved the weasel!
Lmao you’re so funny. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from NY

Lol! Love the Salt Bae bit! Hilarious Another great video sir. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome job! Keep grinding!
Superb restoration, probably quite similar to how anyone would have had to have done it “in the good old days”. Something quite majestic in seeing one of these saws being used.
Olá sou do Brasil curto muito seus vídeos 👍

Awesome restoration! Quick question, what was that wax you used for anti rust?
Wonderful archaic method of sanding like in middle age😀The original and authentic patina remained.

Thank you mate 🙂 by the way you First who admited that in comment, because usually I'm restoring things to mirror shine and trying to make them perfect so I specifically wanted to show this "middle age" method, many people do not understand that not all things can be restored to the mirror finish and sometimes not even needed.

The real art of restoring is keeping the autenticy without making something as brandnew. A certain shabby look is wanted. Thanks for your answer. Our views are nearly the same.
Try a chunk of Pumice instead of sand and scrubber, it lets you save any production etch better
Good
Mega stuff !!
Perfect. ;0))) Grüßle
Lovely restoration Subbed :)
@APR that was at least almost perfect!! I do have a suggestion for your next restoration, a lathe -_- !!
Fantastic! How is called the teeth corrector tool?
My comments on one thing. I think I would have checked the teeth first, to make sure that none of them are too high in relation to the teeth around it. And if there are some of these, file them down to match the surrounding teeth. That will make sure that all teeth take part in the work instead of just the one high tooth. :) Otherwise a nice restoration. I restored my own saw as well, but broke off a tooth on an otherwise perfect blade, when I tried to set the teeth. I did it exactly the way you did here - I think my teeth may have been hardened. :(

Yes, those teeth are very tricky, due to very old metal they can crack in a moment during setting

@@almostperfectrestoration check Facebook. I posted a picture of my restored saw. :)
Its probably been said, but you missed a step with the teeth. First step is jointing so that all the teeth are the same length, then sharpen, then set.
Where can I find a 1 inch wide triangular file for my 2 man saw that looks like this one but larger?

Why no mirror polish? Just kidding. First video of yours I've watched and I've subscribed. Very interesting! Choice of sand is novel. I have a similar tree saw that needs de-rusting an I'd try the sand method if I had some. I will use naval jelly instead. I like your sense of humor! Great camera work. What kind of camera do you have or are you using a phone?

Thank you 😅 im using just a phone Galaxy A6, sometimes its really hard to make quality picture i wish i had a camera but for now my budget is very limited so trying to do my best with simple equipment and tools i have.
The dislikes must be from childish jokes, overall nice restoration video.

Interesting video. I have one question, what’s that tool called that you used to angle the teeth. Looked antique as the saw.
@almostperfectrestoration

This is special tool for setting up crosscut saw teeth to avoid jaming in the wood
I don't know a lot about this kind of work, wondering what a lathe is? Can someone please explain it to me?
@ChristopherStump
3 жыл бұрын
A lathe is a larger, stationary tool that allows you to clamp a piece of wood in place. It rotates the wood at very high speed and you use a too that's sort of like a chisel to carve away the excess wood in order to make particular shapes. See here, for example: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m2prlNOedrvTZbA.html

@@octaviussludberry9016 yes however sometimes when I look this kind of thing up on google, because I am not familiar with this area of expertise, it still doesn't really make sense, a simple definition isn't always the most helpful answer so ai thought I'd ask here where someone would most definitely know and be able to explain it well to me!
Found that saw in a pile of dry leaves and no dirt on it,hmmmm.!
nice job, you set the teeth way to much though, good rule of thumb is a total set (left + right) should be about 1,4 to 1,6 times the thickness of the sawplate, more than twice is bad ;-)
I love you tiny baby weasel

A good job in the recovery process but the staging of the discovery of the piece, authentic or not, leads us to a vietnamese scam style that trivializes and overturns credibility.
