Hey, Eoin. I recently came into some very old saws with much of the etching still present on the blades. What would you recommend as far as getting the rust off without damaging these etchings? I have seen others use fine sandpaper, as you did. I was also considering fine steel wool. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
@tomalesbay
Жыл бұрын
I would soak the blade in multi purpose vinegar - not sure whether that is simply white vinegar, or what, it's just what i see on the label - for about 6 to 8 hours. Then scrub it down with fine steel wool. That should take care of the rust. It left a dark residue that I can remove with fine sandpaper, like 400, 600, hopefully it's fine enough to preserve the original etching. Anyway, FWIW, that method has helped me de-rust several hand saw blades.

If one wanted to get rid of that patina. What would one have to do? Also, after cleaned and restored, is there a way to protect the metal from collecting rust again? I've gun oil that I use to store my axes for the off season, could / should one use that to protect the metal of the saw?
