Forging a CHISEL out of Rusted Leaf SPRING
Here you will see forged Chisel out of leaf SPRING. I found this rusty spring on the road, quite often find items for my restorations there, and decided to take it home and make a Chisel out of it, and it is big straight Chisel.
Processing: First I cut the piece needed, cleaned it of rust using an angle grinder and started to forge. I have a homemade Forge and a 180 pound Anvil. I believe that real steel should go through the fire and hammer of the master, only such steel has its energy strength and uniqueness. Its important to clean the metal from rust and possible shells before forging, as well as after forging before Hardening, this is the way to get high quality outcome.
I forged and formed a workpiece for the Chisel, and hardened in the evening to see the temperature of the metal, it's 800 ~ 830 degrees, then Tempering in the sand using my secret method. The grinding process in the video takes only a few minutes but in reality this Chisel was Hand Polished the for a 1 week. All polishing work is done by my own hands after being tempered. It is not easy to process, a lot of abrasive and Sandpaper was used to remove a certain layer of material. I used Wild Apple tree for handle, and there are several reasons for this - Strength, interesting wood texture, availability, so focused on this choice.
Brass Ferrule was made out of a broken nut, then fixed and sealed with Epoxy glue, and polished to a mirror shine. It turned out to be an Extremely durable and beautiful tool, as well as Very Sharp as a Razor. I did a little test where I show the sharpness and strength of this beautiful Chisel.

Well done! Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.
Beautiful Chisel! And doing all this with no lathe or fancy tools. Love it. Also, bonus points for no annoying music and talk. Subscribed.

Possibly the most elegant chisel I have ever seen. The apple handle is beautiful.
That came out fantastic - I watch a lot of these type of videos on KZread and I have to say this is one of the most beautiful tools I have ever seen crafted - and mostly by hand - well done.

Brilliant!! As the channel grows, try to keep the tools used basic. That’s the attraction 😎

Nice hand made chisel from what others would throw away. Some people can see such junk and envision what they can make out of such things. Thumbs Up!

Magnifique 👍
The sand bath is a way to make the tempering just after the quench, is that right ? Smart way to reduce residual heat.
This is video number four in a row. I think you need a more accurate name for your channel. There is nothing “Almost” about the level of Perfection in your Restorations. Thank you again for sharing your creativity.

beautiful work! it lack a maker's mark tho.

make a video on how to make your own home made forge for those interested in getting into metal working
very nice work.. beautiful.. maybe too nice, you won't be using the chisel? haha..
Hi dude. It's me again :D Fix that screwdriver chuck wobble also, it will help a lot.
Just discovered your videos and subscribed. You're so underated. Your 'lathe' is out of this world. Looking forward for more videos!

That was some great "hammer time" ...what a beautiful chisel. How does leather sharpen the chisel. I ask because it seems to me that leather is so soft. Anyway, another great video. I also like your telling the story of your projects. Thank you. Peace 💫

Thank you,leather is used for finish sharpening of a blade, metal microparticles are removed at carrying out and so razor sharpness is formed

Beautiful work. I don't know anything about tool steel, but is there much of a difference between the steel from leaf springs and A2 tool steel, for example? Could you use the same approach for a plane blade or would it get blunt too quickly?
@almostperfectrestoration
To be honest i didn't work with A2 tool steel, but your question about plane, yes exactly 65G leaf spring steel is perfect choise for plane blade ( my plane blade also made of 65G factory steel with mark on it) number 65 means % of carbon there, so up to 0,6 - 0,7%
I've got to laugh, he turns a rusty old leaf spring into an exquisite, beautifully hand-made chisel and its an almost perfect restoration. 😂 Really, you are being a tad modest.

hello, never seen such process on the sand. Did you tempered it in the sand? how long did you let it in there? at what temperature should the sand be? cheers
@almostperfectrestoration
Yes it was tempering process, for steel like that it must be 30 minutes 180 - 200 Celsius
