Antique Door Bell Restoration - Restoration Videos

Antique Door Bell Restoration - Restoration Videos.
Hello again everyone. I'm with you again with a great project. A project that contains metal, brass, wood and a lot more. An electrical doorbell, made by American C.F. Thomson-Huston company in Paris. This product is a great concept, both design-wise and practicality-wise which mesmerized me, which I think it would to you as well. From what I have been told by the seller of this product, I have learned that it came from a mansion. At first glance, you can see that metal pieces were heavily corroded. The wood case blackened due to moisture and with metal pieces they were painted multiple times. But wood wasn’t rotten. When I opened it, there were plenty of spiders and spider webs. The coils inside looked bad from the outside but when I checked them, I realized they were working but the connections were not so good. We worked with my friend @byOldHand in this project, he helped me with wood. All the wood restoration was done in @byOldHand 's workshop. Thank you @byOldHand We worked hard to get this product to the final condition, consisting many metal and brass pieces. Every finishing plan I did, project got longer. And I wanna say that, the smaller the product is, bigger the project. So this looks like a small doorbell, but for me it was a huge project. Talking about this technically, all the metal and brass pieces had a silver look to them and I restored them keeping this in mind. The label on the product was something similar to silver, some people call it German silver, bafon metal. It was gold plated at some point but I decided otherwise and let it stay silver. And this was decided considering the integrity of the looks as a whole. A long and detailed video awaits you. Let’s see if you like it. I look forward to read your comments. Take care.

What is it that gives me such joy to watch? I'll tell you. The box is, in size and construction, similar to a pair of boxes that my dad made when he was a teen, aprox. 1940, in Geneseo, Kansas, USA (2020 census 236 people), which sat upon a Queen Anne style, solid walnut writing desk that was a part of our living room furniture for my entire life. My folks, both born in 1924, the greatest generation... Thank you for spurring memories. Yes, of course, there is some German in us. Ok, back to the digital recordment... (not video).

Leaving off the capacitor will ensure arcing and rapid burnout of the make/break contacts. It wont last long. It's easy to find the simple circuit which protects the unit.

That was a capacitor that I'm guessing might be used for isolating the power from the metal parts for shock protection. I'm not sure exactly why it was removed and not replaced.

I restored a 1929 Bell telephone last year, and the ringer in the box is very, very similar to this doorbell. The phone's bells are brass though.

@@81cb750fss Quite honestly I had no idea if it was a door bell or telephone bell. I just googled Thomson-Houston door bell. 😂 I was skeptical because it looked like it could have been a telephone bell though I was sure it was a door bell. It's an interesting piece.

You are a master at your craft, but sometimes I would prefer a refresh over a restore. Patinas, little dings and dents, and signs of age make an antique so much more beautiful. At least to me it does.

I watched your short on this project. There was a comment you replied to that you were working on a brass a wood project… well, I assume this was it. Funny, I didn’t read the description like I usually do. But, I knew exactly which shop I was in when the wood working began. Great job, sir. Such a good collaboration. Hope you are well. Be safe.
