    Hadyn’s mindset with the bench reminds me of my own - and I imagine it’s the same with a lot of guys who starting lifting during the hadyn wiseman late 00s to early 2010s obsession with ‘weight on the bar’. Looking at his previous periods of progression he appears to be grinding out periods of hyper specificity with the bench, getting the neurological and skill based adaptations, then hitting - or approaching - his ceiling. The most interesting part of his review, to me, was the part where he mentions he did a 2 week block of his own benching and hit an all time 155kg PB following your coaching. This should be extremely encouraging to him because it suggests that your volume / GPP phase has done exactly what it’s supposed to do - build his base and raise his ‘ceiling’.

    Hadyn seems to be a great example of trusting the process, even if he doesn't quite understand it/have concerns about it. Kind of like you guys mentioned on a podcast a while ago about atheletes not necessarily needing to know why they're doing something, they just need to do it.

    If you want to squat more similar to a normal bar squat with a ssb, just hold it like a normal bar. It is quite harsh to the upper back in a way that I have never found a high or low bar squat to be. Rewards staying upright like a front squat.

If its possible to get a combination of all these ? Would be great to have that option. Just got back to squatting and starting Snatch and dl after long time off. Me and my friend are having a friendly competition in desember om 3 lifts Snatch Back squat Deadlift

    I was looking forward to this video. I agree with avoiding the SSB, I’ve not seen it used often by raw powerlifters. I also agree with more CG Bench than competition grip with Bench (longer ROM means more training effect) but something to consider would be 1 heavy single each week with a competition pause (max 90%) because there’s a real skill element to managing heavy bench press on the chest - just don’t leave it too late before incorporating pauses basically.

    I think the ceiling is higher on hookgrip than mixed if I can get it right. Also the positioning is more symmetrical as when it gets close to 300kg the bar will helicopter on mixed grip, Also I'm terrified of tearing my bicep on the underhand side.

    What do you do if your MRV is above your MEV (or at least very close)? So your volume might not be very high, but you still find it difficult to recover from that. Do you just accept that's the case?

    @@sikastrength Is that something you would do for any level of athlete (I've been lifting for 10+ years)? It's interesting you say that. Historically I've found phases where I have tried to raise volume through GPP/off season has tended to lead to more aches/pains. And hence tended to shy away from pushing in that direction.

  • @sikastrength

    @sikastrength

    3 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely, you do less as you get better but you certainly never reduce that to zero. A beginner might be 40% of the year but an advanced might be 20% still. It probably causes aches as you're likely unaccustomed to it.

    You seem to have programmed a linear peak for Haydn. For a regular 10 week strength block why is there a need to go above 85% if the goal isn’t a meet at the end of the block. Seem to be testing strength rather than building it?

  • @sikastrength

    @sikastrength

    3 жыл бұрын

    Because he was so far from competition we wanted a defined peak and end to a block. We could see what kind of taper he needs, psychological it was good for him, gives us a good what works for him and very importantly in programming we want to be sure to always be heading to a destination and not accruing fatigue without a goal

    @@sikastrength so small weight increments, small increases in volume and small decreases in RPE with similar weight isn’t the goal? Considering a training process with continued progression, surely there isn’t an end goal when it comes to building strength?

    The answer the second part first, for competitive athletes there is very much end goals, so you've got to be prompt in moving to each destination. The first part: not really, practicing weights doesn't really end up transferring up to bigger weights, at least not anywhere as well as progression with some haste. What usually happens with the improving a weights look or feel is you end up taking out loan on fatigue and getting murdered on interest
