Another View - Interracial Marriage

Be honest - when you see an interracial couple do you frown with disdain, or think, "ain't love grand?". The reactions of others is just one of the issues facing those in interracial relationships. On the next Another View, we'll talk with Greta and Jerry Gary, and Danae Aicher, all in interracial marriages, and all who candidly share their experiences. And, when is a music program not just a music program? When it's called Soundscape!

My family has been mixed since the early 1900's. My paternal grandfather had married a mixed race woman, she was mixed with Iroqious Native Americans and AA from near the Canadian border. My father was born in 1931 and my mother was born in 1933 as a immigrant from Jamaica. I showed up in 1957 and had 20 years in the military, the 6th of 7 consecutive generations in uniform. I have 3 mixed children, 8 grandchildren and one ex wife. My oldest son adopted a a beautiful young lady with dark blonde hair. In my interviews with the girls she and her equally beautiful, velvety brown sisters. these girls just don't care about a person's color they care about character and completely dismiss race. This is the future. My 2nd oldest granddaughter is dating a little brown boy with a Filipino mother. Our family is how America looks.

I thoroughly appreciate your interview, questions were honest but appropriate. In a perfect world, color shouldn’t matter. I’m an American born mexican woman taught to stay within my culture but my marriage to a Mexican man didn’t survive. I researched my ancestry and found that my family has African and European ancestry. I’m happy that these racial attitudes are continually changing in America and around the world. God has blessed us with the ability to love one another.

I feel like people only touch on interracial relationships that is about Caucasian and African American. its always the biggest deal. what about Caucasian and Chinese or African American and Mexican what about India and Porto Rican. those are interracial relationships as well. I'm sure you have Chinese people that disapprove of their son or daughter dating someone who is Caucasian or Mexican, they don't like it either, its not only a debate that should only be talked about between black and white.

The last time I saw her, she at the airport ready to start her new job in San Francisco, we had a string of arguments before then about whether or not I was ready to marry her. Minutes before she boarded the plane, she asked me "Do you love me?" and I said " Yes" and then she said "Then marry me. Live a life with me. Have children with me." But for some reason, I couldn't. Then she gives me one last kiss and places her hand on my cheek and says " I love you" and I never saw her again.

We dated for 19 months and she was good to me. she even wanted marry me and have my kids but I wasn't ready to make that commitment and I blew it. When I look back on it, I realized I had a good woman. one of the few white girls from the south that wasn't racist. Whose family welcomed me with open arms at Thanksgiving. Whose ancestors help rescue & free slaves. I was black and she was white but she didn't care! She accepted me for who I was!

I asked her why on earth would they want to do that to her and she said it was because they didn't like that she was white and that they always tried to beat her up. Interracial marriage is awesome. I wouldn't be here today if it never existed. Being mixed coming from a diverse family and raised to love and enjoy being mixed having friends who were also like me is a great experience. I feel so lucky to have a mom who doesn't care who I bring home or the fact I tend to date latin/white guys. My issue with race is being told how to live by others. Like I should be black and calling myself mixed is wrong. It isn't right or fair.

I am a WM who likes, dates, and would marry a BW so I study this a lot. People are getting used to it. It used to be so strange that they would look at an interracial couple and wonder where their partners were. WW and BM seem to think that everyone is supposed to be attracted to them primarily, because BW were the last to step outside their race, and they get confused when they see something different. It is improving.

This traditional disparity has steadily declined over the last two decades, having seen its peak in 1981 with a ratio of 371:100. So if the guy's mom is white he will date white women, and if the biracial girl's dad is black then she will date black men. People usually want someone like their parents, because that's what they are used to.

In the case of the IR couple here (husband/wife), her White culture dominates their household and life. The fact that their kids prefer lighter skin and/or Whites in companionship and that their friends are mostly White means that he has folded on teaching his kids their other side and they prefer their White culture. In the case of the sister to the right, she seems to be the type who is married to a White man, but is still in tune with her Blackness, including what she said about her son.
