Years ago back when snowboarding was still not allowed at many resorts. I was in my third season snowboarding. I took my college roommate snowboarding. He was a really good skateboarder. By mid-afternoon he was already doing Ollie's off the side hits. When we got down to the bottom I just pushed him over just to say see I told you you'd fall your first day.

I also started when I was 50. Got 2 lessons on day one and was linking turns by the end of the second. The instructor swore at me constantly for waving my arms around like a surfer. I still use the technique she instilled in me after 150 days. Bought the wrong gear and payed with concussions and a sprained clavicle and broken ribs. I used to watch pro skank and those other idiots. But have had some good tips from Bennet and Knapton. Even though I have no interest in riding like them. The absolute best lesson I had by far was an advanced lesson in whistler. He taught us 3 ways to turn proper edge carving and to negotiate black runs, trees, moguls, ice and shit, and taught us how to jump and land with correct technique on side hits. All in 4 hours. And if you are new to this. Avran is the best technical gear guide there is. I've bought my last 3 boards and bindings based on his reviews and my honest assessment of my skill level and where I want to go on the mountain. Totally on point every time.

Started last year '20-'21 at the age of 50. Got 65 days in so far. Dunning-Kruger'd my way through my first several days. Instead of lessons, I watched every KZread vid, good or bad and literally took notes. Worked on riding regular last year, riding switch this year, and will take lessons for some beginner park stuff next year. I wanted to be proficient both reg and switch before I try the park. Baby steps.

@@chrissladden4593 Turn 58 in 2 weeks. Transitioned from skis 4 yrs ago and won’t ever put them back on. That said, wrecking sucks. I tore my rotator cuff season 1, broke my ulna and tore a ligament in my forearm season 2. Last 2 seasons just some random muscle pulls due to weird falls. Since learning to snowboard was on my bucket list, I figured I am either gonna figure it out or die trying

Thanks Avran for the great top 5 - needed the laugh. In all seriousness, My daughter started lessons this past season and ended making solid turns down easy blacks and tried small park features. Solid first lessons and my Patience was a virtue to get her there.. I did show her Tommie Bennett and Malcolm Moore beginner videos to get turn concepts and form across…saved Buckhouse and others for me to laugh at…

I started at the tail end of last season and may or may not have ended it after a couple days by spraining my wrist being dragged up a decent blue I probably wasn't prepared for by my roommate teaching me. I've done all of these. I am a very good skateboarder. I had to learn at the top of Winterpark I needed a lesson. I've had two more beginner lessons at other resorts. Take lessons (plural). I went opening week at Wolf Creek to get practice this season. Good practice. Icy conditions. Ice was worse at Taos during spring break. Taos is steep and icy and not fun with everyone on the hill. I'll go when i can, but obviously mid season is best. I've had luck with gear because my skateboard shop gears me up for snowboarding. It helps to have a trusted outfitter for sure. I know my style is crap. I am working on it. Trying to actually turn. Goofy youtubers are good for telling you not to skid, but actual practice is what it takes. Hell, I found you watching goofy youtubers.

When doing a black diamond for the first time, you must be comfortable with blue trails. The first black diamond you go on should be on a entry level black diamond not a steep black diamond. I seen a beginner skier on a double black diamond groomed trail taking wide turns across the whole trail.

I just started snowboarding in march this year and have only recently dared go on the slope without an instructor. I had 5 x 1.5hr long lessons first, but when I went snowboarding on my own I was like “oh hell no!”. Totally not ready for that. Yeah I could make it down the slope doing some ugly ass S turns but I knew my form was hideous. So it’s back to lessons for me. I’d rather spend the money on lessons and learn decent form first, so that when I do go by myself again I’ll be far more proficient and not so stressed because honestly, muddling your way down a slope is actually so stressful. There is zero enjoyment in it. If I continued without further lessons I’d probably give up. So yeah, lessons are really a good idea.
