The Controversial Truth about Dopesnow

Want to clear the air. This video is in no way sponsored by Dopesnow. While the company brought me to their HQ to meet the team after a shoot in France, this video was my initiative and something I wanted to create. After riding for Dope this season I grew to love the brand, the product, and the people behind the company. I wanted to make a video that addressed the unmerited hate the company gets and show off the facts behind the brand. This is the result, love you all ❤

I personally don't really care one way or another, but FTC guidelines do require transparency about having a relationship with a brand, even if they didn't ask you to endorse their product when you speak about it. Doesn't bother me personally, but figured I'd point it out in case you hadn't looked into it (I'm sure you have, but maybe this'll save a few comments from others haha). Hate is a strong word but this is just cheap kook advertising. The most notable things dope snow have to show off are a 4 way stretch fabric that’s too thin to be a t-shirt, some DWR coated fabric that beads water for 12 hours before becoming a sponge, and a program to turn returned junk products into someone else’s regretful purchase.
@andrekvam7897
6 ай бұрын
@@arbitraryalias9825 there are arguments to be made that not everyone needs gear that lasts 10 years and doesnt even need to be repaired or rewaxed/refilled with goretex or what have you the first two seasons. some people want to buy cool looking clothes that keep you warm enough for long enough to go skiing 4-5 times a year. and naturally purchasing top of the line gear is out of any sane persons budget.... for said use. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Knowing how much you can do yourself to waterproof (with waxes or coatings) you can make said product last longer, or choose to be upset that some of the cheapest gear you can find, doesnt last as long as the expensive products. yes there is an argument for making only good quality equipment, that lasts, to save the planet, but you're not making that argument. you're just bashing a company making affordable clothing.
Whoever's idea at Dope it was to sponsor Nick should get a massive raise. So many people are gonna appreciate this video and spend money on dope/montec.

I just worked a ski season using only one set of montec ski pants, they were the dream. I would say I will buy another set but the ones I have are in perfect condition even after skiing 6 days a week for a full season!
about 3/4 years ago dope did a photoshoot in my local snowpark after hours where they had their models stand and pose on a box and do other still shots in the park. the "riders" couldn't snowboard anywhere near well enough to be sponsored for their talent. very non core branding move... but then the last few seasons they had been sponsoring multiple riders and a filmer even paying them for dedicated shooting days. that was a great step up from the insta models they used before that to promote their gear
@PPKFilms
Жыл бұрын
On this (as someone who has worked for an outdoor brand organizing shoots), you have to differentiate product shoots (models wearing shit from next year to have photos for website and stores and catalogues etc) and sports marketing. Meaning that sometimes you choose models who can’t do the sport at a high level for your photos because they are good at standing in front of a camera m, are the right size for the samples you have etc… and then you have a team of athletes who represent your brand performance and values to the public. So even though they have good riders, they prob still do photo shoots in parks with models who don’t ride well. Different tools for different purposes :)
I would say watch geniune testing of the products like angrysnowboarder has done. Dope snow is lower than average quality and overpriced for its quality (despite being cheap). Dope is not the only brand guilty of this. As a general rule of thumb the old established brands like 686 offer a much better value for money at the netry level. And dope doesnt come close to the top end at all, as they admit. I can understand that they struggle with material sourcing etc, but the stitching and layering is sub par. No hate towards DOPE im sure they're tring to improve, but they're not there yet.

Yea great point Cube! From my end, I have been able to test their lineup this entire season in conditions all around the globe. While I’m not able to compare to the likes of 686 (haven’t tried their gear), I was able to compare it to Orage, Descente and Karbon-the brands I’ve worn for the last 15 years. Descente and Karbon offered better quality and better performance in tough conditions, but they also cost 3x. When compared to Orage, I found Dope’s offerings to be the same if not better in terms of performance and quality. While there’s so many other brands that I haven’t tested, I’ve still skied my whole life and tried many different offerings along the way. From my experience, Dope drastically stands out from the competition as an amazing value proposition but this doesn’t mean they are the utmost very best option either.

my only experience with montec is a friend bought a jacket cuz it was a decent value, and it lasted around 2-3 weeks and then it had minor issues like small tears, seams coming apart, zippers jamming, etc. This killed the water proofing as now the seams were letting in about everything. In all fairness, we ride off piste in rough conditions, but still sad to see it only lasted less than a month. for comparison, i run volcom and thirtytwo, both of which have been through hell and back and will probably last another 3-4 seasons. if you ride resort, aren't constantly finding yourself in trees, and don't ride 6 days a week during the season, im sure it will be fine. but given what happened to my buddies jacket, i wouldn't trust it to last a season on my back for 95% of riders out there, it will probably do the job just fine. EDIT: also just checked, for the same price you can get a hell of a lot better gear in a late season sale like on evo rn. 686, volcom, dc, burton, armada, etc. all for around the same price as dope. hell, even an arcteryx for like 80 bucks more

Idk if its my personal style, but love how they support you and the channel. For the price their jackets seem like decent quality so can't hate on anyone buying it. The one thing im curious about is how good their goggles really are. They seem to know their stuff in terms of fabrics... but optics are a whole other thing in themself. I bought the fawk outfit from montec last year, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I quite like that montec and dopesnow differenciate between skiers and snowboarders outfits, and have so many different styles and colours you can choose from. Everything is so well thought through, the jacket is light and soo flexible (I do ski racing, so it's quite important), and it has everything you need whilst simply looking nice. The quality is very good too. The only problem I had was that my ski jacket's front zipper broke the first day, but montec sent me another jacket for free, as it must have been a construction mistake. The new one has been working fine ever since. All in all, 10/10 recommendation for everyone.
what song is playing 8:35? it sounds like a cooking soul song but I can’t find it
I think for those of us who've been riding for a while we recognize there's more on the line than just that quality (since they all do a great job to a degree). The brand, who they sponsor, their involvement in the industry, video parts etc all plays a role in how we support these companies. To me Dope snow has only ever been flashy instagram ads targeting the mainstream audience. To each their own but I don't get the sense (and seems I'm not the only one) that they're part of the fabric of snowboarding and I doubt you'll ever see any riders you look up to wearing it because of that. Doesn't mean the jacket won't keep you warm but there are way too many other companies properly integrated into the sport to support.

I own a pair of their bib pants and this year bought myself a fleece, both are fantastic, the fleece especially is comfy AF. The bib pants were a little bit of an issue as using them for both Skiing and Snowboarding I found it very difficult at times to bend down to put on/adjust bindings. I messaged them with this feedback saying maybe the sides should have a flexible mesh instead of a rigged zip and they got back to me within days thanking me for the information and that they'd pass it on to their design department. To me, that's great customer service.
I would honestly say don't listen to people who say this is just 'Instagram snow gear'. I've got the Blizzard jacket and Notorious B.I.B pants and they're great. Dope really straddles that price gap between cheap / no-brand gear and stuff like Arc'teryx, while still being really good quality and wearing / moving really well. Not hating on Arc'teryx in particular as I have one of their jackets too but don't listen to the anti-hype on Dope. Maybe if you go backcountry for 176 hours straight and stay alive by eating the carcasses of dead bears you may need something more but that isn't most of us.
The problem I have with Dope/Montec is the pricing, it's marketed as 'affordable' when in reality it costs the same as any established brand's mid to low level gear (which is almost always much better quality). And also that employee saying they couldn't source gore-tex because it would be too expensive.. What a load of crap, reason they're not using quality fabrics is so they can maximise profits and keep manufacturing costs down.
Siroko is a new brand on the up. Thinking nobody would pay 300 plus euros for a jacket I bought into Dope. It's literally one in three riders on the hill. I do full seasons so see loads.
Damn, why do people care about what others wear??? I bought dope pants and jacket 1 season ago and they are great!!
i just hate the word dope, its cringy af. and on top of that almost everytime ive seen someone wear that gear they just seem like annoying and cringy people. thats why i dont like the company.

And in Europe, especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Dope is kind off a meme nowadays because usually beginner and people who seem to be forcing to try to be cool but it's a nice brand all in all
I'm glad to hear about your experience with Dopesnow and Montec and haveing this discussion. I'm still relatively new to snowboarding, but I was skeptical about what other riders were saying and posting online. I liked the way their gear looks, but at the time it wasn't a well known brand (at least not to a new rider who mostly knows bigger brands like Burton). I've heard mixed comments, but it seemed appealing to me because their gear is cheap and looks good to me, I figured there had to be a catch. Ultimately I got some Burton gear for a decent price from my local ski shop; I'll definitely buy a jacket or pants from Dopesnow in the future if my current gear rips or I have enough money to buy spare/new gear.
hey why are you not talking about the fact that they are only selling their products online trough their own website and not trough local store‘s to support them?
My whole ski kit (pants and jacket) got eaten through by mice in storage. I have been looking at new gear that won’t break my wallet of a fresh college grad. This video convinced me and I’ll be rocking Montec this season!
I got the Montec Tempest 2020 jacket for my ''first'' time skiing (Haven't gone since I was 4) I really have nothing bad to say. It kept me warm enough, it was waterproof, I could move around easily, quality felt high and it looked good. Is it better than many other ski jackets on the market? I don't know. But I definitely preferred this to the other jackets I tried.

I'm not sure who sowes those jackets up and how is that level of skill even possible. Who are these skilled laborers that make such fine products?
I'm rocking a beautiful Montec set, but I freeze in my jacket!
People act like 3L GTX shells have black magic in them. It's unchanged tech from the 70s. Imagine spending $500 bucks on something fundamentally unchanged for 50 years..kudos to a brand for bringing out the same 3L technology at an appropriate price.
Skiing/Snowboarding is a rich mans game. Funny how the second someone makes a brand that everyone can afford, a buch of people who had their passes paid for by their parents start bullying you for wearing it.
Its nice, makes retail brand outerwear not so mainstream when 80% of skiiers are wearin pastel pink, green dope/montec fits up in the mountain
my dope hoodie coat thing has lasted just fine, over 10 days no signs of wear

I really wanted a dope snow jacket 🧥 and I search and all of that and after two weeks I found out they don't ship to Israel
A lot of skiers and snowboarders are an old and sensitive bunch. They don't trust anything new. Years back I bought dope and montec pants, and some of my friends were really skeptical about the brands. But they're still going and get me dry and warm on the slopes. Only complaint I've had is that they are really short. (I'm 1.83m)

Oh yes. Just look at all of the "but muh straps" comments on anything related to step-in or step-on snowboard bindings.
when the first came out the BIG branding is what turned me off...im happy to see they are being more subtle with it now...maybe one day ill find a garment sublet enough for me to purchase.
As someone who’s been riding / snowboarding since the mid 90s, I’ve never given a rats arse about the nuances of clothing… it makes f*ck all difference. In the snow waterproofing is irrelevant unless it’s raining. So good luck to these Dope dudes is all I can say
The worst thing about Dopesnow is their name. Maybe it would be alright if it wasnt plastered all over their gear. Also this shameless clickbait title and "this video isnt sponsored but I am sponsored" pinned comment.

100% agreed. The brand name dope snow is just heinous. The name oozes low budget noob wannabe wear, even if it is quality. And to add insult to injury they plaster it all over their garments. Their is no doubt in my mind they'd sell far more gear if not for this. They certainly went a better direction with their Montec gear. But I'm still not a big fan of them putting MONTEC across the shoulders of the fawk jackets, but its not a deal breaker.
I saw dope snow all over the mountains last year and decided to get a jacket and absolutely loved it, i have 3 now and a pair of snow pants and ill tell you its high quality stuff, me and my 4 buddies all have dope or montec and love it
Where'd you get your glasses frames bruuuh
the problem is that they dont sell in local ski shops to support them nothing more nothing less. id support them if they helped out the small businesses by having their lineup in store.

They need to commit to goretex materials on higher end options. No proprietary waterproofing is going to be as good, no matter how much DWR they coat on the outer layer.
Ive been skiing and riding since i was a 7 y.o - over 30 years. Ive orn alot of different brands. I have alot of snow gear and i recently bought some dope snow overalls. I rode in them for a few days straight and i was happy with them. No complaints at all. For contrast- Ive bought burton pants and had them rip in the crotch after 2 days. Same with Northface. Same with a columbia jacket- seam blew and pocket ripped. Dope is fine. Nothing wrong w it. Im convinced people are hating on dopesnow to be edgy. Who cares what you wear- just ride. People should care less about fashion and more about following the code and mountain etiquette.
I Did not know that Dope started at Ridestore, back in 2014 all my stuff was from ridestore
nice att du åkte till sverige translation nice that you visited sweden
The brand is so overhated, because every average skier and snowboarder wears it. It's affordable and good quality. Maybe not as steezy as other brands but not bad.
Personally, my ONE dope snow jacket i invested in has kept me completely dry while my friends other super expensive brand has her moist on the mountains..

I appreciaiate the point of cheap, more accessible outerwear for an average holiday maker, however the lack of support for the core community by selling direct to the customer, removes funding and jobs for local ski shops which are arguably the most import feature of the industry. They have staff who are passionate and can guide you to the right product for your needs which in some cases might be a dope snow jacket, and for others who require better quality products for big expeditions the shops can guide you to more higher end equipement like arcteryx or Patagonia. Ski shops also put on events and sposnor riders and promote ski films which are all integral parts of the core ski communtiy and ridestore have removed themselves from that which could be argued to benefit the consumer but only from a monitary point and also it means dopesnow get lots of attention which brings them more financial gain. Its much deeper than “quality and pro riders.” There bad rep comes from the way they've chosen to enter the market which has attracted a large consumer base that doesent care for or support the core community. That doesn’t mean everyone who rides the gear is like that in the same way not everyone in an arcteryx coat shreds, and supports the comminty. It goes both ways but the vast majority of people attracted to dopesnow are more interested in mellow ride days followed by drinks in the lodge than serious progression and just shredding which is okay, but again that doesnt represent the core community and that is where I think the “controversy” comes from. If you just look at there marketing campaigns you see photos of people doing some mellow turns down resort groomers and cute portraits of attractive people vs a company like arcteryx where there website shows the highest end athletes using the gear in some of the harshest conditions. Furthermore those other companies offer customers who visit there sites, blogs and films and community events whereas dopesnow is only focused on selling products. Sorry for this rant it lasted a lot longer than expected. Big appreciation for you steep and everything youve done to get to where you are but I dont think its fair to make a 15 minute video defending the company and alagations, when youre now getting free gear, and potentially financial incentive and then just ignore the actual heart of the problem because as much as people go on about the quality, price etc that doesnt differentiate them from other cheap brands and where the “hate” comes from. Lots of love brotha I hope you don’t take this as any personal disresepct I just wanted to get my point across

To counter this, how about the support thru give to remote workers? Their recruitment system allows people to work for them from the mountains, and live the lifestyle they love. This passion is then passed onto the customer when they speak to the staff. Try working for them for a season and see how fast you change your opinion

@@shushevents5765 except that's false in every sense when a company keeps blowing their money more on marketing to make a inferior product to better companies. Their products claim to be cheaper option, but are still more expensive than the same equivalent by the actual core companies. Every core shop and core company is always close to ski hills. Hell, burton essentially owns a small hill at their Vermont factory. One of the parts some people work at core shops is because the shops usually have a staff pass for a local hill. Lol

it’s not really about the gear or the people making it but about the people who typically wear it, i think the gear is great and affordable and perfect for newer riders and even experienced , but the people who wear it usually are the ones falling off the lift after buying a whole new dripped out purple set of dope snow
would like to see them do a bit more for the community but you're a great example of a good start.
The prices of the jackets are pretty appealing I guess but the pants prices are ridiculous for the lack of quality. For the price you could just get any good quality pant from Capeesh, harlaut, arsenic or vulgus.

I mean, is nobody complaining about how much Burton is charging for their gear? I’ve ripped Burton, O’Neil, and Ripzone gear. I’ve worn Mountain Warehouse ski pants until they are no longer waterproof. Montec gear has held up for me for the last two seasons, and that’s with buying refurbished items. I would encourage you to buy a size up to allow you to layer your gear. But now I ride with a group of 5 people that all have dope/montec stuff. No rips and no complaints (other than price, but that’s life).

No. Because everyone knows that Burton is the most expensive snowboard specific gear out there. But the quality is there to match. Unlike Dope/Montec. But you get what you pay for, so it's priced to match.
Simple question to ask yourself. Are the ski resort employees wearing that?

I think they are brilliant marketers, but when these things clothes deconstructed by 3rd party reviewers, and you see the shortcomings in the build and design, I still feel strongly people are just being sold on the product by their team riders who are paid, their staff who are, well, paid. They are aware again of the massive plus of getting you on their side for marketing. Supporting riders equals dollars. I think they are great people, but still get what you pay for type of product though, not the great stuff some people are convinced they are receiving.

yeah, THIS. Because sponsored riders literally get everything for free and if they have ANY problems with it, most of the time, they can just get another. Just cause a sponsored rider uses it, doesn't mean it's high quality. I'm glad they're at least trying tho, because the lack of giving back to the community was one of the biggest problems most people had with them. Now the real question is, do they take the profits or actually improve the product? It's pretty much still just a brand for weekend and vacation riders. It's how we know you're a tourist.

@Kit Police You're opinion of the style, the brand, and the people who wear it is not what steepsteep was addressing in the video. It's about claims that the clothing cannot hold up, made by bitter people who hold a negative opinion about dope and will never actually try their clothes
what they did was listing their own products beside other well known, well established brands in a store which wasn't clearly connected to the dope brand. By that, they basically put dope on the same level as the other brands. (but as you said, dope wasn't that good at the time) It's clever marketing, but i dont like the part of them not making it 100% clear that dope was a in house brand that was not competitive to the other brands (performance wise) Because that probably tricked people into thinking them buying a brand jacket, but instead they got dope snow. Wich always looked trendy, but doesnt perform. In the end, the user must inform him/her self about the product. But if you end up buying crap, because its on the same page as high quality brand clothing, you got tricked by the page. And there for, it's "dope snow" that went against the moral of providing good products, but instead took the money route. Beside that part, their marketing was super good. The outfit competition and so on really made them grow. Clever
