Ann Coulter | Full Episode 4.19.19 | Firing Line with Margaret Hoover | PBS

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter discusses her early support of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign due to his hardline stance on immigration, her disappointment with how the Trump administration has handled immigration and border security, and why she is now saying the crisis at the border is “worse than it would ever be under any Democrat.”

    She's right about one thing. Illegals have been exploited for decades for cheap labor, and politicians from both parties have looked the other way.

    And who gets hurt the most by cheap labour? Blacks, Hispanics and the poorest 10%

  • @maanelid

    @maanelid

    2 жыл бұрын

    Illegals are not being exploited, because “exploited” means “to use someone unfairly for your own advantage”, and that’s not happening. They enter the country *illegally* and get hired with much better and higher paying jobs for their cheap labor in the USA (plus some considerable welfare benefits and much more security) than if they were to stay in Mexico where there’s a dearth of wealth/capital/job opportunities and lots more crime. So it’s *advantageous* to them to sell their cheap labor in the USA, considering what their only other alternative is.

  • @maanelid

    @maanelid

    2 жыл бұрын

    BTW, I actually agree with building a wall of some kind to prevent illegal immigration through the southern border. But not because they’re being “exploited” for their cheap labor (they aren’t), and not so much because competition with illegals puts downward pressure on the wages of some low-skilled US citizens (that problem could easily be fixed by abolishing minimum wage laws and abolishing occupational licensing laws, if only republicans would make that connection and push for that). The main problems with illegal immigration are: 1) they still disproportionately get lots of welfare benefits (particularly the low skilled ones from the southern border), which costs legal taxpayers considerable money and their labor productivity doesn’t compensate for. 2) illegals from the southern border are disproportionately more likely to be violent criminals. 3) Islamic terrorists can easily sneak in through the southern border if it’s not controlled. 4) as Ann said, many illegals coming from third world or developing countries (like Mexico, Colombia, etc) bring with them the most distasteful aspects of their cultural norms, particularly corruption, disrespect for law and order generally, and a collectivist mindset that inclines them to vote for democrats and big-gov republicans who want to massively expand the welfare state and government regulations (hence massively increase gov spending), whither away the Constitution, and erode the traditionally American (and good) cultural norms such as individualism/personal responsibility/freedom of expression. It’s possible to assimilate some of these illegals into the traditionally American cultural norms, but it’s a slow process and not feasible when illegal immigration through the southern border is happening at the rate it’s been happening at for several decades now. That’s why we are in serious danger of entirely losing America as we know it and as it was originally conceived (which would be very bad).

    @@maanelid “exploit" actually means: "to selfishly take advantage of someone in order to profit from them or otherwise benefit oneself" and in this context, the people being "selfishly taken advantage of" (by employers who hire illegal immigrants, as well as the immigrants themselves) are the people who were born here.

  • @videopipeline6419

    Illegal immigrants are not so much the victims of exploitation as they are the enablers of it (along with the employers who hire them). The victims of this exploitation are low-income people who were born here in the USA, whose economic prospects are diminished by competition from people who are not legally permitted to be here.

If memory serves it's that "Trump says we've been in Afghanistan 20 years...it's actually 19". They not only continue but worse, but the 20k comes from how many times they were allegedly repeated.....NOT individual lies. THE SOURCE is the "Washington POST"....DOA! Hoover always so desperate to be accepted by the self-ordained intellectual/moral/sentient elite....FAIL!!!

    The immigration issue is tough...I dont see most "real americans" doing the hard, laborious, long hours tough work even if the pay was decent...truth is most "real americans", even poor ones, feel entitled and don't really want to work hard not to mention the fact that most folks have horrible money habits nowadays as well.

  • @andrewbaldwin4454

    Margaret Hoover grossly understated the possible negative impacts of immigration on the domestic work force postulated by labour economist George Borjas. Ann Coulter is a lawyer, not an economist and was obviously not familiar with Borjas’s work, so understandably her defence was a little weak. Borjas’s essential conclusion, which Margaret did not state (from his book “We Wanted Workers: Unraveling the Immigration Narrative”) was that: “a 10 percent increase in the size of a skill group probably reduces the wage of that group by at least 3 percent.” This would, pace Hoover, apply to any skill group. She was obviously just taking Borjas’s results from his re-examination of Canadian Nobel economics laureate David Card’s study of the impact of the Mariel boatlift on wages of native-born Floridans, which found it had no ill effect. The Marielitos were predominantly males who had not completed high school, and Borjas that found that for the most comparable part of the Florida labour force: male non-Hispanic high school dropouts, there was a catastrophic drop in their average wages, and it took a full decade to recover. Nevertheless, Card, the author of the discredited study on the boatlift, won the Nobel prize, not Borjas, so even in economics it seems it is more important to be politically correct than it is to be right. In any case, it was certainly not true that Borjas found only negative labour impacts for this particular demographic (and this was for Florida, not for the US). See his section on the collapse of the Soviet Union, where he talks about how the immigration of a thousand Soviet mathematicians in its aftermath led to an unprecedented 12% unemployment rate among recent American mathematics graduates looking for work. This would seem to be just the kind of immigration that Ann Coulter favours, as these Soviet mathematicians were among the best and the brightest. However, it makes Borjas’s point that there will be winners and losers with big increases in immigration flows, and native-born workers will sometimes be the losers. It’s not just a problem of high-school dropouts and there would be no problem if every American completed high school. That’s simply naïve.
