Anime Campaign EP1 - (Official Upload)

Ойын-сауық

This is first episode of "Anime Campaign", the TTRPG series that "Epithet Erased" is very loosely based on.
Originally streamed on Twitch.tv/SurpriseRoundRPG about 7-8 years ago, "Anime Campaign" was a series of loosely-connected episodic adventures with rotating party members and players. Each episode is loosely based on a different genre. The first episode, "Bliss Ocean Curiosities", is a western. This stream (along with elements of later episodes) was eventually adapted into episodes 5-7 in "Epithet Erased".
EPISODE 1 CAST AND CREW:
GM - Brendan "Jello" Blaber
Co-GM - William T. Sopp ( / bigmovingtarget )
Percy - Tom Laflin ( / tomlaflin )
Gorou - Kiane "Chula" King ( / kianechulaking )
Sgt. Eros - Roob ( / doobyroob )
Meryl - Lamp ( / warpedlamp )
Each episode will be reuploaded here with our best attempt at sound balancing and light editing once each respective episode has been adapted into Epithet Erased. For example, EP2 is currently being cut down and edited because that was the source material for "Epithet Erased: Prison of Plastic". It should be up within the month.
This series was taken offline to prevent new fans from spoiling themselves on future installments of Epithet Erased. In particular, Episode 4 contains massive spoilers that will severely impact the reader's enjoyment of later "Epithet" books where the focus of the book IS the spoiler in question.
We respectfully ask that if you love this series, please do not spread the original copies of the episode so that new fans can avoid them. Thank you so much!
In the meantime, you can support the original team by watching the thousands and thousands of hours of new content that these wonderful players have created in the years since the original broadcast. Check them out on Twitch:

I just realized why Zora’s epithet is Sundial in Epithet Erased but Crepuscule in this. In EE, Percy guessed it quickly, so it had to be something guessable, while not being obvious. In Anime Campaign, guessing someone’s epithet gives players an advantage, so Jello made the most powerful character of the session have the most obscure word as an Epithet.

I will say, even having watched the episode Prison of Plastic is based on, it is *significantly and drastically* different. The cast was completely reshuffled, (even more so than the second half of Epithet Erased compared to the above episode) entire areas were completely changed if not outright removed, and the dangling threads at the end are _completely_ different in comparison. For instance... (Prison of Plastic and Monkey Toy Audience spoilers below) In the original, Millie (Lorelai's original name) and Giovanni actually hooked up, since Molly and Giovanni didn't really have any history at that point. This resulted Millie literally creating a son for Giovanni, and the trio became recurring "antagonists" in future episodes. But since Giovanni and Lorelai basically never got together in Prison of Plastic, there's no real lingering thread for them to keep bothering and picking on Molly in the rest of Epithet Erased. I've no doubt Lorelai will make more recurring appearances, especially in a... _particular_ book in the far future. But all things considered, Prison of Plastic did a much more concise job of introducing Lorelai's character, bringing her through the whole arc, and finally resolving it with a very nice, bittersweet bookend, with only one last lingering thread for her future. I may not agree with Jello's more revisionist mentality regarding Anime Campaign, but I absolutely agree with him on one important point; Brendan Blaber has grown a _lot_ as a writer since Anime Campaign wrapped. Having everything now laid out allows for a much more engaging story by picking the more critical elements of the story and cutting the less interconnected elements. At the end of the day, Epithet Erased is the _much_ better of the two stories to experience, and though it will take much longer as a whole, if you have the patience Epithet Erased will be the much better introduction to these stories. Though I don't think Brendan gives himself enough credit, Prison of Plastic was a treat to listen through even having already watched the original streams, with plenty of subtle jokes and foreshadowing that you only really pick up on if you know the major future reveals, and there are even elements of the old stream that were cut that make me extremely glad I experienced both! (I freaking _love_ the octoclackers from the original, and there was an entirely cut underwater section that was super fun) Needless to say, I cannot _wait_ to see how he handles the future reveals in the next couple books. If they're handled _half_ as well as Lorelai's reveal in Prison of Plastic, they're going to be absolutely *_amazing_* to experience!

Windrose and Reflections are also amazing series to check out on Stabbyness. Jello actually plays in the former, and both are using a completely homebrewed system aptly named "Sentiment TTRPG", which bases the entire gameplay loop around how characters are feeling at any given moment, and allows them to change their characters in the future based on what moments stuck out to them as special in the past. It's really free-form and creative and serves extremely well as a rules-light system while still having a lot of depth and complexity. @@VanillaSnowGolem I've run a series of one-shots with it before, and it very easily created a whole slew of wonderful references and inside jokes that still get used to this day. For instance, one player used their "Curiosity" to eliminate a deer enemy during a chase by asking, "Why are you a deer," which managed to confuse it enough to just... stop chasing them. I swear, that joke alone comes up at least once every couple weeks. (it actually came up earlier today) I'm even using one of the NPCs I made for that game as a temp in a different campaign, and after all the OpenD&D controversy, I've been planning on running my upcoming Humblewood off the Sentiment system instead of 5e. It's just such a fun and creative system, and it's so open to modification while remaining lightweight to play and GM for. I really look forward to seeing more development on the system!

Anime Campaign, and after that the SurpriseRoundRPG and Stabbyness channels have been huge inspirations to me as a creative and a GM. The roots of my GM style and presentation were built off of doing what these "cool people on the internet" did while I was still in high school 6 years ago, and while it's changed over the years, I can still see the bits that inspired me. Even though the original campaign was a treat to behold, it's been even better to see you take these silly sessions and make them into a proper series at a level that you can be proud of as a creator.

Hi there Jello! I genuinely avoided the original re-uploads from folks and stuff about them because you asked nicely, and this is going to be the first time I see anime campaign! I'm quite excited, given the mystery element of what it could be like after coming across Epithet Erased. I always figured there was probably spoilers or stuff that didn't age well, neat to hear you confirm that at the start, and I just wanted to say thank you for putting in all the time and effort into sharing this piece of the past! Epithet Erased has been so much fun and inspiring, and hearing you're planning out into the next two books was the best news!! I hope you have a wonderful day and that this new year goes better than the last :D

Just mad respect for the insane audio balancing and editing to make this even half-way listenable. Massive props. Also, please tell me the new Epithet TTRPG book won't be so heavily based on ad hoc balancing rulings. This game looks fun on paper but I know I (as a GM) would suffer having to make ad hoc rulings on damage and whether things do/don't hit. Especially since I have combative rules lawyer players.

If it makes you feel any better, you can stat this like any other RPG. Maybe a boss needs a flat 17+ to be hit, a strength check to move a big boulder you were aware of needs a combined 30, etc. The system lets you plan as much as you want to. Plus, most people tend to mark damage for weapons and abilities. A sword can do 5, +/- any conditions like armor or whatever.

I found epithet a couple months prior to PoP's kickstarter, so at the time it looked like it would be another tragic tale of a great series consigned to oblivion. After watching, I found a dark corner of the internet that hosted anime campaign and was planning to watch it as a coping mechanism. However, at the time it felt like trying to eat cocoa powder once you run out of a fancy chocolate bar, more of a sad reminder of how good it could be with some refinement, so I put it down and walked away. I'm so glad that I ended up deciding not watch it. Now I get to wait for the amazing books without having ruined the twists and turns.

These were on my rotation of "on the background to fall asleep to" up until they were taken down, barring 6 part 1 that I downloaded because the twitch vod would always give me a replay error, so I got to keep it. Been following you for a long time, and I always saw you advertise it, but I would never actually watch it, even though I thought the concept sounded interesting. I tried to watch some recording of it sometimes before Epithet erased came out, and I always thought it was weird that I couldn't find any of it. Well, glad I never watched it, because Prison of plastic is AMAZING, and I would NOT want to have spoiled myself of what comes next. And after watching this re upload, I can indeed tell that I would probably not have been interested when it came out. But right now? Holly molly, spotting all the Epithet precursor joke and characters and location and plot points is SO MUCH FUN. I am eagerly awaiting the re upload of episode two to do the same.
