Animals That See In Slow Motion

Ғылым және технология

Ever wonder why it's so hard to swat a fly? It's because they, and many other small animals see in slow motion and can use that info to react faster to a coming attack! Anthony explains how this works and which animals have the fastest reaction times out there.

The real question is why do insects like houseflies stay near your when you are trying to kill them? Shouldn't instincts tell them that the area isn't safe? It's like they are taunting you.

So in a nutshell time is not fixed. The second we see. An animal could experience one of our seconds as being more like 3 seconds for itself. So in a way if you have a fly that only lives for 1 month then to it's own perception it has lived more like 3 months. So in a way we all live in different time rates and what we see something as isn't necessarily what others see it as, As in we see an animal do something fast and we think "that was fast" but to that animal it might only seem average speed to itself.

So what we see as the passing of time is merely a creation of our brain to try to make sense of the world and help us operate in it. I think we even experience time differently in our dreams. Our brains seem to be able to work faster when not having to process real stimuli. Thus a dream can seem like a few hours but in reality it may have only been 20 mins or something.

i may be 3 years late but... i feel like this whole slow motion fly thing is misrepresented or something because time is definitely not a variable, after a month of the flies life if it lives in 0.33x speed then it would constantly be looking back in the past. likewise its like saying an animal with a lower hertz than us constantly looks faster and faster into the future which is impossible. You can probably react quicker in situations but to constantly be looking in slow motion definitely seems impossible.

Steven Hichelkoff i think u misunderstood the video and this comment, in the perspective of humans, a falling tree would take longer for it to drop from the air to the ground therefore we would have more time to run away from danger. This can be applied the same way how flies can easily avoid danger from humans. That doesn’t mean that the time for flies are already way behind than humans which supports your statement that flies can constantly see into the past. It is all just a matter of perception in how time flows for both parties as they seem to see each other’s completion of an action at different speeds. If you take your time and think about it, an action from both parties are completed at the same point of time regardless whether the movement of the other seem to be slower or faster than the other. For example, by the time you clapped your hands to kill a fly, and the time the fly has managed to escape, in the case for humans, everything went by in a flash, but in the case for the fly, everything went slower than how humans perceived it to be.

If we have our eyes half closed to reduce visual information, would it make our reflexes faster? Quick moving insects like flies and dragonflies have compound eyes, which are hundreds of tiny individual eyes that work independently, improving their reflexes but reducing visual detail. Also, people with fast reflexes don't seem to use their eyes but instead, their focus do react in time.

I feel as though some things are too fast for me when they move and they just become a big blur. For example, when I play basketball, when someone passes the ball, it just blurs so much that it's hard to keep track of and it makes it hard to improve in the sport. Any ideas?

To us humans when time seems to be in slow motion, that's actually because during that time our brain takes in more information/forms more memories per time unit than usually. So then later when it remembers the event the brain is all like "I guess that must have happened in slow motion.".

The fly actually doesn't see us move in slow motion, we only see THEM moving faster. For the fly time runs normally. It's the effect of gravity on the fly and spacetime around the fly that is bent. The fly is less affected by gravity then we are, because it is so much smaller. Because its time is moving slower by reference to our spacetime continuum, we see it move faster. The opposite is also true, if you are near a black hole you are more affected by gravity and you will seem to move slower for an outsider, but for yourself time moves normally.

Kind of like dreams. Sometimes they can feel as though they last as long as a week, but you've only been sleeping for a few hours.

If this is true, you should be able to perceive differences in time when your body is very cold or very hot. It would be interesting to experiment. You could have a metronome going and tell your subjects that you are going to change the speed of the metronome while they are in a sauna or refrigerated room. Once their body temperature has been sufficiently altered, ask them to come out and report whether you sped up or slowed the metronome... in actuality you don't change it at all. You should see some correlation in reporting...

that depends on the eyes "latency" , the cones take some time to reset, like LCDs that have the gtg time (grey to grey) which is the time it takes each pixel to turn on and off and on. You can try being in the dark some minutes and then with a something bright, flash it quickly in front of your eyes, you should see the trail it leaves agains the darkness. Also wait till they clear completely and you should be able to see some noise (eye's noise floor) which is the same you see in cameras.

They are suggesting that the dogs see a flickering screen. The images are there but instead of seeing a smooth picture it would be jittery. Try filming in 30 frames per second and watch that. It's actually still surprisingly smooth but it's not the standard 60 FPS. I think it's a poor analogy, my dog can pick out animals when their pictures are displayed on the screen no problem.

I have a serious question what if you buy a TV that it refreshes so fast that a dog can see like we do, will that make dogs wanna see what we are watching?

I want to know where a thought originates from. A biology teacher said the device in the brain which makes a thought is strictly a receiver and attributed it's operation to a god/supreme being/force. Can you do a video about where a thought starts in the brain and how it starts? I'm an atheist and reject the biology teacher's claim.

Oddly, I've known most of this since I was six years old. Observation pays off =] I always noticed the faster the animal's metabolism, the shorter its life... the slower, the longer. Sorta...

one time in gym the class was playing soccer while i wasn't paying any attention and some kid booted the ball unknowingly directly at my face. luckily i looked over right as ball was being kicked and time was almost doubled. then the coolest ninja/matrix moment of my life happened as i dodged it while watching it fly by my head
