    @@shubhd.kaushik5604 OK so I'm a bit confused about what you're saying. It seems you are adding entirely too much baggage to the topic that simply isn't necessary. Party affiliation isn't really a factor as far as my comment goes. It's clear in the movie that Andrew Shepherd is a better candidate to be President than Bob Rumson. Rumson is shown to be your typical greedy asshole party politician. He is for the most part, the antagonist of the movie. So me wanting to see his reaction to the thrashing that he so deserved is nothing more than a bit of catharsis. So I'm not sure what it is you are saying or why you think they couldn't have shown such a thing.

  • @jeremybr2020

    @jeremybr2020

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@shubhd.kaushik5604 Well that certainly didn't clear anything up, only added more questions. First off, why couldn't a movie do that? A movie can decide to make whoever they want the antagonist. There's certainly nothing said by the MPA (motion picture association) that says they can't do that. And do you actually know what it means when you say "having an affair"? Because I'm not sure if you do. To have an "affair", in the context we are discussing, one must be married. Andrew Shepherd was married to no one when he started dating Sidney. He was single. You seem to admit this in your second comment, which you inexplicably called "a kind of appropriate affair". lol What exactly is an appropriate affair???? That was exactly the problem that Shepherd had in the movie. He was a widower, and had been single for years. Why shouldn't he be able to pursue in courting a woman? How would that be any kind of bad influence on his daughter? So yes, I can easily call Shepherd better than Rumson, and do so with arguments to justify it. Oh and btw, at the time when i first seen this movie, I had no loyalty to any one party. Had Shepherd been a Republican and Rumson a Democrat, it wouldn't have changed my thoughts one way or the other. I would've still wanted to see Rumson get his comeuppance.

    Noah Harvey YOU ARE the hypocrite! First of all, this movie was way back in 1995. Secondly, he is talking about convincing Americans that he's right, not getting rid of the 2nd amendment. The problem with people like you is that, until you lose a loved one tocan assault rifle attack, you don't give a damn about those who do. Hasn't what happened in Vegas recently taught you anything? The killer owned 42 high powered assault rifles, a civilian. People ought to own guns for self-defense, and not use it to kill those they don't agree with. Everything Andy Shepard (Michael Douglas) said can accurately apply to Trump. He hasn't done anything to change people's lives now that he's POTUS, but is busy blaming everyone but himself for the failure of his policies. A good leader takes responsibility for their actions, and Trump hasn't done that at all whatsoever. Like Bob Rumson, he's only making gullible Americans afraid of the country's problems, and blaming Obama for it, but refusing to see that the buck stops with him as POTUS. So stop calling Douglas' character a hypocrite, because you sound like one!

    @@trekkienzl2862 right...The republicans were fear mongering against the rude minorities. You swallowed the kool-Aid. And your comment about trying to stop African Americans from voting by demanding ID’s is probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. You failed to mention the Muslim ban was from counties that the FBI admitted they could not properly investigate. I know, facts mean nothing to you. I ran a youth center where 13 year olds were smart enough to get ID’s but you are saying blacks aren’t? That’s racist. And who do your beloved democrats fear monger against? Easy: Legal Gun Owners, those who support free speech, those who support freedom of religion, blacks who don’t support the democrat party. Oh, let’s not forget the war on women by allowing biological men to compete in their sports. I could go on and on. Basically, anyone who doesn’t agree with them is singled out and crucified. Well, that makes them an enemy of the Nation’s basic rights and anyone who supports that is also ab enemy of freedom. Not sum up, liberals are dangerous and I don’t give a .... what you think about that fact.

It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with his fake views on gun control and crime prevention. The point is, he's correct in principle. One thing I think that gets missed is that he did not say "I'll go to door to door and get the guns." He said "I'll go to door to door if I have too but I'm gonna convince Americans I'm right and I'm gonna get the guns." Big difference. It's that whole convincing Americans thing that real presidents seem to want to forget.

    This movie came out before the Supreme Court's 2008 Heller decision, but even the very-conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, very much an "original intent" kind of guy, said in the majority opinion that "Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is NOT A RIGHT TO KEEP AND CARRY ANY WEAPON WHATSOEVER in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose." "The Court's opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, ... or laws imposing CONDITIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS ON THE COMMERCIAL SALE OF ARMS." So yes, they CAN *regulate* what kind of weapons can be sold in the US. I'd love to see Biden come out with an assault weapons ban, part 2 - with clearer guidelines as to what's legal and what's not, a ban on high-capacity magazines and without all the loopholes of the previous ban.

    This speech still holds up after many years. In the time when Sen McCain is making his peace after a long battle defending this country (Andrew Sheppard character) against Trump and the collective Administration (he's dying anyway communications person) also the Sen Rumsun character (Richard Dreyfuss), maybe someone could slip this movie into Trumps viewing scheduled (Executive time anyone?).

    Still holds up? It's about 10 times more applicable today. Yes, I am writing this four years after you, but you are two years into Trump's presidency so should have been able to see the lunacy already taking hold with a third of the U.S. population. It's clear though that Rob Reiner and Aaron Sorkin saw where we were headed back in the 90s!

    Did anyone else hear a mic drop after that?
