Vicki Lawrence gave a lengthy interview where she covered that day on the set. There had been a pre-rehearsal meeting and Carol wanted everybody acting right so they could get their takes on time. There was a full set dress rehearsal and Tim told a story about an elephant with a dwarf trainer and after the meeting earlier it was Carol who could not keep it straight. Then there was a break where you could eat something and do last minute prep before the take, and this is when the director came in and gave them scene notes. Vicki knew exactly what Tim was doing... The director came in with set notes and said the elephant joke was changed. Tim had rehearsed with the elephant and the dwarf, but for the take they changed the joke to the siamese elephants... Vicki had already decided before she stepped on the set for that take to get Tim.

@@mycroft16 Carol Burnette in an interview talked about this skit, and how Tim Conway was always trying silly stunts to get the actors to break character and start laughing. He was great at that. Watch any episode of the Carol Burnette show and you'll probably see at least one skit where Tim Conway gets someone to break character. Anyway, Carol was saying how she and Vicki were talking about they were getting tired of it and they had to stay in character, no matter what he tried. This line wasn't planned, it was just an ad lib that Vicki came up with in the moment. And put herself in television history.

And it was all ad-lib. Completely off script. It's what can happen when you have talented people working together. Tim Conway was incredible with his timing. Each time he would pause, as if he were done, but was really waiting for the audience and his fellow actors to calm down, and then add the next line to his tale. Vicky Lawrence administered the coup de gras. Perfect timing for her, also. Apparently Conway would frequently change his performance between the dress rehearsal to the actual show, which is one reason he got Harvey Korman to break down completely with laughter. Conway's talent is a gift. You cannot teach that anywhere.
