Andrew's Story - Full version

Andrew Westerlund of North Vancouver, age 14 is a unique patient at BC Children's Hospital, having had not one but two of the most terrifying illnesses a child could ever face.
Out of the blue, Andrew is suddenly stricken with a heart condition and needs a heart transplant to survive. Fortunately for him, a suitable donated organ is soon found and Andrew becomes just the third patient ever at BCCH to receive a heart transplant.
Less than two years after the transplant, Andrew’s cardiologist notices lumps on his neck. He is rushed to the cancer department and soon gets the diagnosis: lymphoma - which is a side effect that about 1% of transplant patients develop.

Anyone know how Andrew is doing now? I have a children’s hospital story that ended but not positively yet I feel like the experience helped other children that came after. We spent plenty of time at children’s, Ronald McDonald house and the Easter Seals house in Vancouver and we always felt blessed that it was only an hour or two drive from our home town as tons of families had to travel great distances to get there, sometimes living in an RV in the parking lot. I am happy to know that there is more options now. Take care Andrew, we love you too xo

It sucks to go through anything like that. Not just one but two terrible illnesses. Who knows how many illnesses he may have?
