While grieving my dad , I found this beautiful song. My parents are from Romania - I was born in the United States of America. We have this instrument at home and occasionally he would blow into it a melody. He loved playing instruments and loved listening to beautiful melodies. This piece brought tears - I cried. I'm not sure if he ever heard this but in my heart, I know he would have loved it as much as I do.

We call it the Romanian Nai. It’s one of my favourite and the Caval Flute .Romania has many beautiful traditions and customs. When I was little my mom used to make me dance Paparuda to make it rain when it was dry. So many beautiful memories keeping our traditions and then I moved abroad and miss every single day Romania.

Perhaps one of the greatest live performances captured on video in our entire human history. As an obsessed musician, this performance is is the definition of musical transcendence . It effects me powerfully every time. I can't imagine the electricity those people must have felt being there. I would have been bawling haha ima big soft-ee

It makes me feel happy and sad at the same time, because of Gheorhe Zamfir... The guy is 82 years old, a few steps closer to the death and this piece of art won't be the same without him.

A broken heart 💔 for all of you who, when you hear this music, remember someone you loved very much, someone who is no longer with you, maybe someone who has passed away or someone who has separated.

1950s I played this as a solo on the recorder at school. I think I was about 12 years old. Brings back many memories. I'm 77 now, still shiver when I hear it played or sung.

I was there in Bucharest 2015 with my mom. Gheorghe Zamfir is a genius. This was probably the best moment of the show. Our favourite memory!

@@goned_goose2950 Two reasons: he's not Romanian to play the traditional songs with the heart of the ancestors in his chest, and he's not as experienced as Zamfir. Two generations, each one with his own soul. One does not have to exclude the other but Zamfir's songs have been played in movies and around the world, live.

The song is so strong that i can imagine the sheperd walking alone in the mountains with his dog, shepering the sheeps back into the farm and him staring at the horizon as the sun fades away in the distance and nightfall arrives and his unbearable sense of melancholy consumes him and cries alone as he has no one to talk.

This instrumental piece (Der einsame Hirte, El Pastor Solitario, The lonely Shepherd) was composed by the German music mastermind JAMES LAST in 1977. ( Have a look at Wikipedia or at any commercially available sheet music of this piece)

@@spidergt80 The first fantastic performer of this piece was Gheorghe Zamfir and I believe that without his skills this piece would not have become so well known. But the composer was James Last and I don´t think when composing it he was thinking of the pain, the history, the soul and the spirit of Romania, especially since he composed the melody before he met Gheorghe Zamfir.

I am 61 years old and I remember Mr. George Zamfir when I was at student at Seneca college. We went on a field trip to Wards Island in Toronto and I said to my friend, " I hear this beautiful flute music, where is it coming from?" I followed the sound and came to a fence and WOW WEE, there it was, a dream come true. God Bless George Zamfir. I love your music.
