Ancient desert library with a secret key |S7 - E23|

In this episode, I reach Chinguetti! This was the final destination of my desert adventures with Ahmed. From here on, I'm continuing on my own again. Chinguetti is a fascinating desert town, on the old trans-saharan trade routes and hosts several libraries with ancient books. What an incredible place!

Man...Ahmed went SO FAR out of his way to OFFER to help you in the first place at all....let alone coming 4 hours to help you, then DAYS escorting you across the desert many hundreds of miles over many regions, introducing you to locals, helping you navigate, and then calling ahead to the hotels...then continuing again for multiple more days, giving rides to nomads, helping you find what you needed, giving you water and food, showing you camping spots, etc....what an INCREDIBLE guy

One of the best things I find in your channel is the confirmation that people across the world are much the same. Mostly helpful and friendly. That is not the message we receive from most sources. Throughout your journeys you've not only greatly entertained us but also you put us abreast of the realities of the places you visited. Personally I am happy that you followed your instincts and took Ahmad to be your guide, frankly speaking, the desert is definitely an unforgiving land and here who could be any better than a true and knowledgeable gentleman as Ahmad to guide you through. I feel a tinge of sadness that you have to part now with him, but maybe if you could give Ahmad a bit of support and exposure so that he could provide the same guidance services to other travelers as well, not only could this be a life-saver for them but will also help Ahmad who is indeed an encyclopedic bank of knowledge of the land.

Moisture and humidity are the enemy of old books. The desert's very dry climate preserves them well within the cooler dark library building

With the blue bracelet you'll be reminded of your adventure with the legend in blue Ahmed. That was a fun journey to see the Eye of the Sahara and all the interesting stops along the way. EDIT: I just read an article on BBC about Mauritania and there was a photo of the gentlemen in the library with the original WhatsApp text/books. Small world.

Wow! Just imagine the wealth of knowledge and history contained in those ancient texts. Loved the secret wooden locking mechanism, which still needs a regular lock 🔐 😂 Ahmed was a delightful guide and kind companion, clearly the epitome of Mauritanian hospitality. Hopefully he'll reap many tour guiding rewards in future for having kept you safe and secure, ... and free of poisonous scorpion bites!

Ahmed's help was invaluable. If you had carried the weight of water, fuel, and gear, you might have bogged down in sand or shredded your tires on the long, rocky stretch. He introduced you to local nomads, including the man with the tent full of artifacts, and guided you through "The Eye". Thank you for introducing us to the Sahara.

The red/orange bike and rust colored jacket are such great desert colors. 🙂 Ahmed was the perfect travel companion to fill the need for that part of the journey. The whole segment was fascinating in its human and geologic history...and relaxing for us because we felt your travel safety was secure. And, now, on with solo travel - and both you and Alaska taking a well deserved R&R. Hooray!

Noraly, these were the most stunning videos you made in the sand of Mauritania. Achmed was a wonderful companion, what a guide and what a way to travel "light" on Alaska. And the video shots with the car in the background are so dynamic an epic on screen! Following you for a very long time now, but these episodes in the Sahara are on top of my favorites!

These Saharan episodes have been stunning. The first Itchiboots episode I saw was when she was riding along a little sandy road on the west coast of South Africa, saying how much she hated riding on sand. She came across a father and son out riding and they offered to guide her along the beach. She was quite nervous and got stuck in one place, but seemed to enjoy it. I always think of that when I watch her blasting her way through deep desert sands now. She has certainly come a long way, both literally and figuratively speaking😊
