Anastasia Is Arguably The Most Progressive Princess Film To Date

Ойын-сауық

The nineties was an era of change for the Princess film. A time when all the old school tropes were turned on their head. A time that paved the way for a new era. Eventually this would lead into the revival era, which was the most lucrative era for animation ever. But when we talk about the OG progressive Princess movies that paved the way for that era. We never mention Anastasia. Only the same old classics. So here is why Anastasia is truly the most modern of the Princess movies.

What I love about Anastasia is that her personality doesn't feel "polished" like most Disney princesses. She has way more edges that make her feel more realistic. She's sassy, she can be very bratty, she can be very childish at times and this sparks arguments between her and Dimitri. Maybe it's just my own impression but most Disney princesses are written to be 100% likable and marketable. And if they have flaws, they are usually portrayed as "quirky". Anastasia feels more like an actual person that takes action and doesn't take shit, but has her vulnerable moments and can be petty if she wants to be. She isn't quirky, she just has a very strong personality that not everyone can handle.

I agree. Disney always tones down the character flaws to make them more marketable. Fox didn't seem to mind Anastasia's character, but they toned down Bluth's trademark spooky imagery.

The Golden Age princesses might come off that way because of the era they were created in, but the Renaissance princesses come off that way because they tend to focus on the task at hand. They're usually introduced as being so engrossed in their work or personal interests that the rest of the world just melts away. It might not come off as realistic to you, but I find it pretty relatable as a neurodivergent person. Neurodivergent disorders like Autism or ADHD are generally characterized this way.

  • @NoxAtlas

@ThePrincessCH I get what you mean. I'm autistic and relate to focusing too much on a task. But it doesn't feel satisfying if most of the personality is mostly reduced to "she's kind and she's focused on her goal" and she doesn't get much done on her own without the involvement of a male character. Or that the Disney princesses don't have any "ugly" or "annoying" sides. Heck, I can be cranky as hell when something doesn't go the way I planned or if my schedules get messed up and I can get very petty if someone tries to fool me. I know these were different times with other standards. I'm not saying the movies are terrible, but characters like Anastasia or Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame are just more appealing to me.

The scene where Dimitri tells Vlad that Anya really is the princess is probably by my favourite part of the whole movie. At the start of the film Vlad and Dimitri are opportunistic conmen who'll pass off any girl as Anastasia as long as they get the reward for it. But they've genuinely bonded with Anya so much throughout the journey that by the time they learn the truth, the money isn't even relevant anymore. They're just thrilled that she's finally back with her family.

That's kind of my issue. If they bonded with her, why make her unknowingly go along with the scam? Why hype her up for an opportunity they don't believe is genuine? They still put themselves first up to that point (Vlad even liked Sophie but had no issue lying to her).

I do totally get where you are coming from with the whole Vlad and Sophie thing. But, I also see it as they didn't have to tell Anastasia anything. Yeah, they were going along with a scam, but, at the same time they didn't know what was really going to happen with Anastaisa. Yet, when the truth came out they didn't have to tell her or Sophie anything because it's all real. But, the truth did come out eventually and Dimitri and Vlad did make up for it. @@OpticalSorcerer

@@andreasmeelie1889 I don't get why they wouldn't have to tell her anything. Until they knew who Anya was, they were just doing it for money. They never thought (or cared) that it could hurt Anya. If you recall, the dowager empress tells Anya she's a very good actress when she first meets her, which would've shocked Anya if she never heard about people trying to be her (like she did at the opera). She'd questionnig she was who she thought she was, no linger trusting Vlad or Dimitri.

Fun fact: I think they used the term princess for our purposes because we're used to king the monarchy of England and stuff but actually a grand duke/grand duchess ranked higher than a princess because an emperor (which a tsar was) ranked above a mere king.

Anastasia proves that Disney is not the only one that can make a princess movie (yes, I know Disney bought Fox, but they still didn't make the movie). I also like how the writers incorporated some of the real Anastasia's personality into the character. The real Anastasia was pretty mischievous and sassy. She usually didn't care much for royal gatherings as they rarely had anyone interesting to talk to, even people her own age. She also hated having servants dress her up for big events and didn't care much either for fancy dresses. The palace was pretty much the only place where she was allowed to be free-spirited and spent much of her free time pulling pranks on the palace staff, hiding in cupboards when her parents or tutors were looking for her and throwing snowballs at her sisters but as she got older she matured out of her mischievous nature and started writing satires and jokes in her free time, though she continued to be sassy and smart-mouthed. This made her Alexei's favourite sister, since she was sometimes able to ease his suffering by making him laugh. And as Alexei got older, he and Anastasia became very close even though he was considerably calmer and more respectful of authority than her. Honestly, the fact that someone so pure and full of life was murdered stings my heart.

Honestly I wish more studios put stock in animated musicals. Fox was amazing, and Dreamworks did great with "The Prince of Egypt," (even if using Stephen Schwartz got him removed from "Mulan"). Imagine if they kept doing that--plus it's good competition to keep Disney on their toes and pushing themselves.

I know you were talking about the damsel in distress trope and how Anastasia isn't a damsel in distress (which is absolutely true) but you have to give credit to Dimitri for not being a damsel in distress either eventhough he is the "love interest" One of the major things I love about the romance in Anastasia is the fact that the two of them have so much influence and impact on the series and help each other through team work. During the train scene, Anastasia find the dynamite, she helpes Dimitri with the hook and she tells them to jump like a leader and the protagonist she is but it is wrong to call Dimitri dumb because he was very influencial during that sequence. He was the one who found out what was wrong with the train, he was the one who came up with the plan to use hook and seperate the trains as well. I call this "team work" During the dream sequence, Dimitri saved Anastasia as well as when they were kids and most importantly it is Dimitri who bring Anastasia and her grandmother together. Dimitri as a love interest was very well written. And Anastasia herself saved the day a couple of times but most notably as the protagonist she saves herself and her love interest from the main villain (Rasputin) What I'm trying to say is, both Anastasia as a protagonist and Dimitri as her love interest are very well written. Both of them have character development too and Anastasia is definitely one of my top favorite princess movies ever

Agree with all of this, but he suggested they jump. Dimitri: we’re going to have to jump. Anastasia: did you say jump? After you. But yes. Agree. They saved each other without expectations. They did it because that is what anyone would do for the people they care about. There wasn’t the hero complex or anything.

This was a fantastic movie for so many reasons. One thing I really appreciated was the art direction. The 2D animation blended so well with the 3D. The background art was GORGEOUS, almost like artwork taken from the classic Renaissance era of art. The personalities of the characters were engaging. Anya was assertive and headstrong, but not annoying or arrogant. Dimitri was cocky and arrogant, but also curious with an underlying kindness and charm that he tried to conceal. The two had excellent chemistry. The character designs were their own. Anastasia wasn’t “Disney pretty”, but she was a little more realistic, closer to real human proportions. Even their movements are more realistic, possibly due to rotoscoping. They said they didn’t use it, but I’m not completely sure and even if they did, there is nothing wrong with that. I believe this was directed by Don Bluth and his style is absolutely iconic. Anyway, the story took many historic liberties, but my Russian friend still really liked it and I still really like it. PS: It isn’t completely forgotten, because it is a play on Broadway. ❤ …speaking of underrated movies…Balto… I’m just saying…

Yes, historically inaccurate, but I will say one thing. I liked how they combined two stories. There was someone with Amnesia that really believed she was Anastasia. I like praising newer disney princesses but I hate when videos put off the earlier disney princesses as if they had no personality. They were kind, they were funny, they were charming in their own rights. Cinderella was abused but showed herself to be courageous despite the circumstances she was in. The moment she found a way out, she took advantage of it. Briar Rose didn't get much screen time and that is to the detriment of the character, but not to the movie since she wasn't the main character. She was closer to a side character and the three fairies were the characters you followed. Briar Rose also didn't have no personality, she was FUNNY Rewatch the film! Take a look at her expressions and how she isn't fooled when the fairies are trying to get her out of the house for a surprise birthday. Her "I'm really not supposed to talk to strangers, but we've met before" Snow white was a marker for her time, showing her stay strong despite the circumstances (like cinderella), and it was a very encouraging story during the Depression. Not that they aren't similar, or don't have their own limits, but it is a disservice to the characters to say they are all the same character, no personality (when being kind IS a personality trait), etc

While I agree that Anastasia definitely pioneered the idea of ending “poor but happy”, flashing Princess and the frog on screen and saying Anastasia is the only example of this kind of hurt my soul a bit 😭. It’s shown very clearly that despite Naveen getting the direction asked of him for him to return to his luxurious lifestyle, that he rejects it (Except for their wedding scene, which I imagine not only could have been more lavish, but could have even taken place outside of New Orleans). The money used to pay for the property is still Tiana’s tip jars. While it is questionable how they got the resources for the restaurant, we also aren’t given a timeline, either-so they both could’ve worked or he could’ve asked his parents. Either way he HAND BUILDS IT with Tiana in the montage. It’s pretty obvious its not the royal lifestyle he used to live (even if he was shown to dislike that lifestyle), and that he is embracing this as a part of the new world Tiana has shown him. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk :3

No no no. Dimitri was the one who encouraged them to jump. Dimitri: “we’re going to have to jump.” Anastasia: did you say jump? Well, after you. In all honesty, I love how they save each other. Neither of them are damsels in distresses. They act accordingly and assess the situation. They don’t expect to be saved by the other. They just do it because they care about each other. I also like how Dimitri has to take accountability for his actions and tries to redeem his mistakes. The arc he has from only wanting a reward to reuniting Anastasia with her grandmother because he wants the best for her. Chef’s kiss. I like how Anastasia is mostly a static character because she did not need to change. She evolved and had new life experiences, but she did not need to change in the story. The animation is still some of the best in my eyes. It is very unique. The music is timeless for a reason. Just phenomenal.

This video is amusing to me because well, nowadays, even according to Disney themselves, these films in the 90s are not progressive at all. The company needs to ‘fix’ them by releasing bad live action remakes. I’m glad it seems Disney is ignoring Anatasia because I really do love this movie. Megara proved to be worthy of godhood by sacrificing herself to save Herc, and so Zeus could've turned her into a goddess.

An understated aspect of Anastasia, that I personally love, is how Her "Prince charming" not only has a character, but is also relevant to the story. In older Princess movies, the prince's only purpose was to be handsome, and the few princes that even had names were not really given a purpose in the story but to be handsome, and brave. Modern princess movies I feel overcorrect this, by not only depriving these characters of any personality, but also stripping them of the one thing they brought to the tale: Being a hero. They are not permitted to add anything to the story. That said, Demetri I feel perfectly displays that the male lead/ love interest can be competent and of importance in the narrative, without making Ana any less the hero and protagonist. They save each other, they escape Russia together, and neither would have survived the Climax, without the other. They are in every way a team, and I think that makes the romance between them all the more romantic. They are equals, it's just that this is her movie that we follow her. She doesnt look up to him, or down on him, but they meet the challenge of their adventures together.

Slightly besides the point, but can we STOP demonicing characters, especially girl characters, needing help?! Anya isn't great "despite" Dimitry saving her on the ship. She is great becouse she is a well writen character who CAN'T solve all her problems on her own! The characters in this movie work so well together becouse they save each other, they balance each other out and have chemestry. They all have goals, they all show initiative in different parts, and they all help each other. Sometimes you help, and sometimes you need help. That's human! I fucking hate that everybody makes it sound like all the characters now a days need to save themself, becouse if you don't save yourself, you are "weak" and a "damsel in distress" or an "outdated stereotype"! That's how we got the soulles trash fire that is "Wish"! Becouse god forbid the female lead has a male partner that she can work together with and who can help her if she needs it. Nooooo! She has to be so perfect and over powered that she can handle everything, everytime, by herself! Thanks. I hate it.

I definitely liked your video about Anastasia, and she’s probably my favorite princess in comparison to several of the popular Disney princesses like Ariel, Belle or Jasmine. I definitely agree with your opinion about how her story isn’t purely about falling in love or that being the “be all end all” she has a choice to live as a princess with her grandmother or choose a guy who basically used her and does come to deeply regret taking advantage of her. I really love how their relationship actually started with them not standing each other at first, but once they learned to work together and Dmitri sees she is more than capable of handling herself and even manages to keep them from getting killed on the train, they start to like each other over a span of a few months or so. They don’t rush into a relationship overnight or anything, they take the time to get to know each other and gradually respect each other before developing feelings for the other. As for your minimal comments about Pocahontas, I disagree. I completely understand why not everyone is a fan of this movie, which is a bit unfair when Anastasia was just as inaccurate when it came to the real Anastasia’s life or even how awful of a ruler her father truly was. Anyway, one, John Smith is NOT a rich man in the movie, he’s literally a captain who’s clearly broke. John Rolfe in the sequel is the dude who is an aristocrat who abandons his wealthy life and status to go to live with Pocahontas in the New World. Pocahontas as a character is NOT romantically driven. Yes she falls in love with John Smith and wishes she could help her people see he isn’t like the others, but really wants to help her people and prevent war at all costs. It clearly shows how much her people mean to her, hence why she chose to stay in the end instead of going with him. I find both Pocahontas and Anastasia very cool and underrated princesses imo

I just hope that in the movie of Shrek 5, once Disney buys DreamWorks, all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses appear, especially the most important character in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, with her best friends Tip, Dash, Kiera and Catalina, and besides, they will be the new main characters of the movie of Shrek 5 so that they help Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others to defeat Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, as Queen Grimhilde, Lady Tremaine, Maleficent, Marina del Rey, Ursula, Gaston LeGume, Jafar, John Ratcliffe, Shan Yu, Dr. Facilier, Zhan Tiri, Judge Claude Frollo, Mother Gothel, Tamatoa, Kakamora, Drago Bludvist, Grimmel The Grisly, Mor'du, King Runeard, Prince Hans, Pitch Black, The Druun, The Soldiers, Dr. Zara, Queen Nerissa, King Magnifico, Morgana, Evil Rapunzel and Drizella Tremaine, and to prevent Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks from ruling and destroying all The Multiverse Forever, especially The Kingdom of Far Far Away, Shrek along with his wife named Princess Fiona will need help from their new friends which are all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, as Prince Florian, Princess Snow White, Prince Charming, Princess Cinderella, The Baker, Anastasia Tremaine, Prince Philip, Princess Aurora, Prince Eric, Princess Ariel, Prince Adam, Princess Belle, Prince Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, Prince John Smith, Princess Pocahontas, Prince Li Shang, Princess Fa Mulan, Prince Naveen, Princess Tiana, Prince Flynn Rider, Princess Rapunzel, Varian, Cassandra, Maui, Queen Moana Waialiki, Hiccup Haddock, Princess Merida, Kristoff Bjorgman, Queen Anna, Jack Frost, Princess Elsa, Jin, Yi, Connor, Ruby Gillman, Starboy, Princess Asha, Mateo, Queen Elena, Prince Desmond, Princess Amber, Prince James, Princess Isabel, Prince Hugo, Princess Sofia, Princess Raya, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Namaari, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica and Melody, but actually, Melody is The First and Only that she is not a True Official Disney Princess, because Melody made her debut in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea and it is also because she is The First and Only Daughter of an Official Disney Princess, but Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others also need Melody's help to protect and save all The Multiverse, especially Their Kingdom of Far Far Away away from Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, because Melody is The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, but also The Death of Queen Lillian, because since her husband named King Harold passed away in the movie of Shrek 3, she has felt heartbroken and that caused her own death in her Kingdom of Far Far Away, and all The Inhabitants of The Kingdom of Far Far Away are saddened by The Death of Queen Lillian, because now she is with her husband named King Harold in heaven, and now they have lost their queen, that means now The Kingdom of Far Far Away needs a new queen and King Artie said that his love interest, girlfriend, fiancée and former classmate from Worcestershire school called Princess Guinevere would be the one to be The New Queen of Far Far Away, so King Artie decided to return to his old school called Worcestershire along with Shrek, with his older cousin Princess Fiona, with Donkey, with Dragon, with Puss in Boots, with Kitty Softpaws, with Perrito, with Dulcinea, with The Three Diablos, with Goldilocks, with The Three Bears, with The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, with The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and with the Others to meet again with their friends from their school who are actually Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany and his love interest, girlfriend and fiancée Princess Guinevere to take them back to his Kingdom of Far Far Away, and also The Romance of all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, especially The Romance of Maui and Queen Moana Waialiki, The Romance of Hiccup Haddock and Princess Merida, The Romance of Jack Frost and Princess Elsa, The Romance of Varian and Cassandra, The Romance of Starboy and Princess Asha, The Romance of Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany and The Romance of King Artie and Princess Guinevere, because I think that Maui will be Queen Moana Waialiki's love interest, boyfriend and fiancé, while Hiccup Haddock will be Princess Merida's love interest and boyfriend, Princess Tiffany will be Prince Lancelot's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée and Princess Guinevere will be King Artie's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée, because Queen Moana Waialiki is going to fall in love with Maui, Princess Merida is going to fall in love Hiccup Haddock, Princess Tiffany is going to fall in love with Prince Lancelot and Princess Guinevere is going to fall in love with King Artie, but they don't know how to tell them their feelings towards them and neither how to win their hearts, because every time Queen Moana Waialiki gets too close to Maui when it comes to true love, she gets very nervous with him, while which in the case of Princess Merida is also the same, because whenever Princess Merida gets too close to Hiccup Haddock when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous with him, in the case of Princess Tiffany it is also the same, because whenever Princess Tiffany gets too close to Prince Lancelot when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, and in the case of Princess Guinevere too, because every time Princess Guinevere gets too close to King Artie when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, but luckily for them, Princess Fiona will help Queen Moana Waialiki to win The Heart of Maui, also Princess Merida to win The Heart of Hiccup Haddock, also Princess Tiffany to win The Heart of Prince Lancelot and also Princess Guinevere to win The Heart of King Artie, and I also want that Jack Frost will be Princess Elsa's love interest and boyfriend and Varian will be Cassandra's love interest and boyfriend, because Jack Frost leaves fall in love with Princess Elsa, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Jack Frost gets too close to Princess Elsa when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, because Varian leaves fall in love with Cassandra, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Varian gets too close to Cassandra when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, but fortunately for they, Shrek will help Jack Frost to win The Heart of Princess Elsa and also Varian to win The Heart of Cassandra, except Goldilocks, Namaari, Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, because now they will be The Only Official Disney Princesses who do not need to have love interests and who can remain single forever, and also the same for Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, because like her new adoptive aunts Goldilocks, Namaari, Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, she doesn't need a love interest either, but also The Rivalry of King Artie and Queen Anna because they both want to compete in a challenge to see who is The Best Ruler of a Kingdom, because both want to do what is best for Their Own Kingdom, because King Artie wants to do the best for his Kingdom of Far Far Away because now he is The New King of Far Far Away and Queen Anna wants to do the best for her Kingdom of Arendelle because now she is The New Queen of Arendelle, but at the end, King Artie and Queen Anna become best friends in the world, because at the end, they both learned from their mistakes that they have made since their challenge to compete to see who is the best ruler of a Kingdom, and that at the end, King Artie and Princess Guinevere see their first true love kiss and that they become a romantic couple, just like Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany, and also that at the end of the movie of Shrek 5, Shrek becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princes and Maui, Hiccup Haddock, Kristoff Bjorgman, Jack Frost, Varian, Jin, Connor, The Baker, Starboy, Mateo, Prince Desmond, Prince James, Prince Hugo, Prince Lancelot and King Artie become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princes, while Princess Fiona becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princesses and Queen Anna, Princess Elsa, Cassandra, Yi, Ruby Gillman, Anastasia Tremaine, Princess Asha, Queen Elena, Princess Amber, Princess Isabel, Princess Sofia, Goldilocks, Namaari, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica, Princess Raya, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Princess Tiffany and Princess Guinevere become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princesses and that one day, Princess Tiffany will be The Wife of Prince Lancelot and that they have a family in the future, and that also Princess Guinevere is The Wife of King Artie, that they also have a family and that she becomes The New Queen of Far Far Away in The Future.

The royal family were NOT terrible. They were imperfect and the extended family had its jerks who were living it up, but the imperial family themselves were fairly harmless. Despite their station the kids were very down to earth (they had to make their own beds, save up allowance money which was usually spent on gifts for each other rather than selfish things, etc) and that poor little boy who would have been the next tsar was sick most of his life, to the point where he was almost a cripple. The parents were misguided, Nicholas had some very weird prejudices that seem incredibly stupid to the modern ear and yes Alexandra was a religious nut, but considering the pressure on them both how is that surprising? Alexandra who was never healthy herself had to push out five friggin babies while an entire nation turned their noses up because she got girls on the first four tries. Then she gets demonized for not wanting a duma. Dude with all the troubles she had giving birth to her son, you think she was just gonna hand his inheritance to a bunch of politicians on a plate? Not only did they not deserve to be shot, they were genuinely good people if you read their diaries and letters.

Yeah, I would argue that a little thing called World War I had much more to do with the Russian Revolution happening than the Royal Family being "really terrible." It's just funny to see the vid flummox history even while poking the film for doing the same thing

Anastasia was better than most of the Disney Princess movies that came before. Like seriously I feel like Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) are like Damsels In Distress. Like they are out of the way while they're being rescued and a big fight is happening between a big bad and 1-7 male characters. The Dwarves chased the Evil Queen as the witch until lightning strikes the cliff sending her to her death with a big boulder crushing her and being eaten by vultures. All while Snow is in a sleeping curse. Lucifer the cat fought Jacque, Gus and other animals until Bruno comes to chase the cat out the tower window. All while Cinderella was locked in the tower room. The Good Fairies and Prince Philip fight Dragon Maleficent and kill her while Aurora was in another sleeping curse. (If I had a nickel for everytime Disney had a title Disney Princess under a sleeping curse, I would have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. The Renaissance era Disney Princesses were better than Golden Age, they actually were more involved but most of them had their Damsel In Distress moments. Ariel was dragged underwater help prisoner until King Triton gave up his freedom for hers, which she was there for the big fight with Ursula. Jasmine was a slave when Jafar took over and was trapped in a giant hourglass but she was their. Actually was fighting him but magic is hard to combat when you're not magic. Pocahontas was the hero where John Smith was the Dude in Distress, progressive. Mulan was hero while Shang was Dude in Distress trying to rescue the Emperor. Progressive Belle traded her freedom for Maurice's freedom. She was allowed to stay but went to rescue him when he was trapped in a blizzard. Then Belle and Maurice was locked in the basement until Chip rescued them. And then she saves Beast. Belle was still a hero, even with the Damsel in Distress moments. And Megara was technically not a Disney Princess, she was a Damsel in Distress for a few moments, captured by the centaur River Guardian, tied up by smoke magic by Hades and her soul was trapped in the swirl of lost souls. But she was still better than the Golden Era Disney Princesses. She was an interesting character not immediately love struck with Hercules. And with Anastasia, she was the hero, saving Dimitri time after time. There was the moment he rescued her but dream magic is OP for resist so it's not a problem. And she was the one who defeated Rasputin in the end. And way before the 2010s revival era. Way before Tiana beaten The Shadowman. Even non Disney Princesses like Kida from Atlantis, Jane from Tarzan and the princess from The Black Cauldron (don't know her name or spelling of said name) were Damsels In Distress. In Enchanted, Geisel was the hero rescuing Patrick Dempsey's character from a sleeping curse and the Dragon Queen. Which I think was inspired by Anastasia being the hero.

I'd say Cinderella and Snow White are more abuse victims than damsels in distress. They are conditioned to be subservient and aren't equipped to handle themselves for that reason, but they're fairly proactive in spite of the fact. Cinderella used the royal decree argument to get to the ball and asked her birds to get Bruno to fight off Lucifer, while Snow White offered to provide housework to the dwarves in exchange for shelter because what other reason would they let some stranger stay in their house. Most of the Renaissance princesses are probably better equipped to handle the world because they grew up in a loving family. Mulan's father encouraged her after her failure with the matchmaker, Belle is able to talk to her father about her problems, and Jasmine told her father about what happened with Aladdin which resulted in him chiding Jafar.

I guess I do have some issues with Princesses being Damsels In Distress cause of the whole Mario Bros games Princess Peach getting kidnapped in almost every game that's not a sports, Mario Kart or Mario Party. I do like the Damsel In Destress characters but if you're missing during the final battle, in you movie as the title character, then I'm gonna judge you.

The Heart of Hiccup Haddock, also Princess Tiffany to win The Heart of Prince Lancelot and also Princess Guinevere to win The Heart of King Artie, and I also want that Jack Frost will be Princess Elsa's love interest and boyfriend and Varian will be Cassandra's love interest and boyfriend, because Jack Frost leaves fall in love with Princess Elsa, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Jack Frost gets too close to Princess Elsa when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, because Varian leaves fall in love with Cassandra, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Varian gets too close to Cassandra when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, but fortunately for they, Shrek will help Jack Frost to win The Heart of Princess Elsa and also Varian to win The Heart of Cassandra, except Goldilocks, Namaari, Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, because now they will be The Only Official Disney Princesses who do not need to have love interests and who can remain single forever, and also the same for Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, because like her new adoptive aunts Goldilocks, Namaari, Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, she doesn't need a love interest either, but also The Rivalry of King Artie and Queen Anna because they both want to compete in a challenge to see who is The Best Ruler of a Kingdom, because both want to do what is best for Their Own Kingdom, because King Artie wants to do the best for his Kingdom of Far Far Away because now he is The New King of Far Far Away and Queen Anna wants to do the best for her Kingdom of Arendelle because now she is The New Queen of Arendelle, but at the end, King Artie and Queen Anna become best friends in the world, because at the end, they both learned from their mistakes that they have made since their challenge to compete to see who is the best ruler of a Kingdom, and that at the end, King Artie and Princess Guinevere see their first true love kiss and that they become a romantic couple, just like Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany, and also that at the end of the movie of Shrek 5, Shrek becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princes and Maui, Hiccup Haddock, Kristoff Bjorgman, Jack Frost, Varian, Jin, Connor, The Baker, Starboy, Mateo, Prince Desmond, Prince James, Prince Hugo, Prince Lancelot and King Artie become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princes, while Princess Fiona becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princesses and Queen Anna, Princess Elsa, Cassandra, Yi, Ruby Gillman, Anastasia Tremaine, Princess Asha, Queen Elena, Princess Amber, Princess Isabel, Princess Sofia, Goldilocks, Namaari, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica, Princess Raya, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Princess Tiffany and Princess Guinevere become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princesses and that one day, Princess Tiffany will be The Wife of Prince Lancelot and that they have a family in the future, and that also Princess Guinevere is The Wife of King Artie, that they also have a family and that she becomes The New Queen of Far Far Away in The Future.
