Fun fact mal means bad or evil in french so as a guy who speaks 3 languages and who watched only tv shows in french due to my country preferences I always thought she was named mal as she was bad and in english I thought her named actually changed to evil😂 to show that she was no good lol I was shocked when I found her name was still mal

​@@jeannetonlaeticia Mal means bad and Maleficent means doing evil or harm, which is where the Disney Cartoon Villain and her later translations go there names, but in the Live Action 2014 where she is the good guy they go down the root of changing it to something like Magnificent.

Descendants is one of those rare instances (something Kenny Ortega does well) where they take a lousy-to-bad idea, but they nail the execution, thus making everything else automatically seem good. Where other films fail is thay they may have a great idea, but have a lousy execution!

The dumbest thing about worldbuilding is that all the villains are similiar age. So mediaval fantasy of Snow White was apparently happenning in the same time period as 101 dalmatians which are set 1930's era London.

The budget and production values obviously aren't blockbuster level, but I still don't think it would have killed them to at least give Mal a set of horns. It would have fit the whole "not judging on appearances" message they're going for, you'd actually be able to tell that she's Maleficent's daughter, and plus she's still Dove Cameron, so it's not like having horns on her head would make her ugly or anything. Side note: The Evil Queen from Snow White actually _does_ have a name (Grimhilde) and you'd think it would have taken the writers a five second Google search to look that up, instead of just sticking with her title _and_ naming her daughter (one of their own main characters) after it.

Funny you mention the horns. In the fourth Descendants book, there’s a scene where Mal gets mistaken for Malificent and she thinks: “What? I’m not that much like my mother! It’s not like I have horns!” It’s a pretty funny moment.

My siblings and I were OBSESSED with this series growing up. All of us loved Descendants. The music is great, I love the themes, but it does confuse me, why did the teens get married and were going to be the Queen or King at 16?! I was wondering that too when I re-watched it for the first time in years during the marathon lol 😅 but there was a bit of cringe!!! I also thought about how conveniently their parents decided to have kids around the same time 😅

I don't think Jane just wants to fix her hair, I think she just wants to do magic plastic surgery bc Mal made her think she was ugly and like manipulated her. Although, I feel like this plot point could have been handled better, especially for the kids watching. Like, the main character telling another girl she's ugly and needs to alter her appearance to look good... Dont you see how kids might take that? But the writing is pretty bad anyways.

Man, how I look back on the with AWE!!! Yes, I can see the loopholes here and there, but this one of the rare “lackluster ideas to excellent execution” ideas. Pure nostalgia rush, right there. 😂

Not gonna lie. When I was younger and saw the movie, Ben having almost sung Mal before she covered his mouth made me laugh a lot. I didn’t realize at the time that the cookie had a love potion at the time as it went over my head in the baking scene, so I just considered him to do so after eating the cookie to be random yet amusing. I don’t know why, it just was.😂

Ironically enough I had the urge to watch all these movies over break and man it was cringe but I was so happy and singing along with it. I remember when descendants 3 came out I had my brother and nephews watch it with me.

Personally, I really enjoy the Descendants films. I’ve even read the spin-off “Isle Of The Lost” book series that are set before the first film, and in between all the others. It’s just an ironically fun world with amazing characters. They shouldn’t work but they do, and that’s what makes it Disney magic. The music and casting were always on point in every film. My only nitpick is I wish they’d built Audrey up more as the surprise villain in these films. I loved idea (and still do) of Malificent’s daughter basically becoming “The Good/Heroic Queen” while the daughter of Sleeping Beauty snaps and tries to put an entire kingdom to sleep with Malificent’s own scepter. But they fumbled that execution a bit in the third film. Wish they would’ve laid the groundwork more… Like film 1 Mal and the Core 4’s redemption, while we see Audrey was cheating on Ben with Chad before he broke up with her at the tourney game; film 2 Audrey bullying Mal in an attempt at petty vengeance that is in part why Mal has a breakdown and flees back to the Isle - with everyone at school severing ties with Audrey or something by the end of that one for her bullying (maybe Jane or Lonnie states how Audrey used to bully them too?); and then have the third film be more focused on Mal and Audrey now fighting on completely opposite sides of what their respective mothers legacies were (like show how Mal feels about Audrey wielding Malificent’s scepter against her and her friends), explain why Audrey is such a natural at using the scepter (since in the books it clearly states that only someone of Malificent’s bloodline can use that scepter without being cursed themselves), have more development for both Mal and Audrey in general throughout the final film in that trilogy so the fight means more. But those are all just tiny nitpicks in the trilogy as a whole. The films are still pretty great.

Descendants is the best Disney Channel movie. The world, the story, the characters, the actors, the music are all so amazing.

Even though I love this franchise, I'm pretty sure the events of the movies take place in a universe that's separate from the previous Disney movies where the same events happen but during the same timeline.

Maleficent song was just so good!👌Like you can see how Maleficent is manipulating Mal, but also the pipes from Kristen are so well done, love her!

I like the concept of Disney's Descendants. However, I would've like it more if it was a full animated franchise instead of live action franchise.

I also enjoy the descendants franchise, despite the fact that is kind of terrible🤣 The first movie is my favorite cause I think it has the best flowing plot, and the character decisions make more sense to me than the other two. Not that any of them make much sense. anyway, I have a bit of a problem with the ending of the third movie, and how it seems to completely undo the message of the first movie. Which is that? We are not our parents. Their parents made terrible decisions and deserved consequences. Being trapped for eternity on the island might be a little harsh for some of them, but I don’t think I agree with just letting everybody go because nobody is purely good or evil. So many of the villains on the island were outright murderers! Do we really want to just release them back into society without at least seeing a psychiatrist?

I enjoyed the original Descendants movie OK. Sure, it was obviously cheesy and (as this video nicely explains) had ridiculous world building and lazy naming conventions. But Kristin Chenoweth was hilarious in it, and I appreciate that the story had some nuance. The characters prejudiced against the villain kids were portrayed as wrong but it's not like everything they said was 100% false. Sleeping Beauty's mother's reasons for hating Maleficent were understandable even if she shouldn't have taken it out on her daughter, everything Cinderella's son said about the VKs was true even if it also applied to him, and they really were trying to pull off an evil plan on their parents' behalf. IMO though the sequels were both boring and the ending of the last one, where they just decide to let everybody on the Isle of the Lost into Auradon, was stupid. I'm not saying the Isle system was perfect but there are reasons why prison systems exist, people. We can't just completely do away with them. It's like the movie wanted us to completely forget that the previous two had established that the villain kids on the island had been raised to be evil and just have them be innocent victims. So much for nuance.

i think the ending of the third one was more abt how literally those on the isle can be good as much as bad and so can those in Aurodon, by having Audrey be the villain the point was having a barrier wouldnt stop it as both good and bad can come from both sides, also punishing the villains kids would likely end up creating a cycle of repetition as they end up raised in that enviroment.

I first watched this in Spanish, and thought that calling the female protagonist, "Mal" (bad) was the most ingenious thing ever!

Dunno if this was answered in the films, but how the hell did some of the villains survive to get dumped on prison let alone have children? Last I checked, Maleficent disintegrated at the end of Sleeping Beauty.

When the movie first came out me and my friends who all were girls I was the only boy ind group loved this movie it was a cult classic then we doubled down on that when the 2nd movie came out and any chance I’d get I would sing what’s my name, this movie was such loved by me and my friends that me as a little kid decided to think if we did a play of this with the entire class

Tbh the movie is goofy like you said, but even after all there years I still like it. I was like 10 when it came out and now 9 years later, for some reason I still like it. I still rememeber when I was a kid I would sing the songs frok the movie for like a month after it came out xD especially the song Mak sings on the date with Ben xD Those were aome cringe but also funny times
